Six different colours including grey, red, orange, lemon and lime were chosen to make the glazed terracotta elements on the facade by @rpbw_architects .140,000 individual elements have been processed, consist of ceramic TERRART® elements made by the German company @NBKusatc
“Cities should not be boring or repetitive. One of the reasons cities are so beautiful, is that they are full of surprises, the idea of color represents a joyful surprise.” Renzo Piano
Each facade plane is constructed as a unitized construction pre-assembled with ceramic elements on facade aluminium units produced by @SchneiderFassadenbau at their factory in Wroclaw, Poland. Each window/facade element was then lifted into place with pulleys and aligned in acrobatic fashion by means of suction cups, as no exposed scaffolding and cranes were allowed in the location. This also reduced time of installation and cost. The 22 types of untised panels are hung at the top of panels to the concrete structure and restraint for windload at the base by the panel below.
The Terracotta as detail designed between RPBW, Schneider and NBK acts as a rainscreen on the outside, with a pressure equalized intermediate space between the outer skin and the glass / aluminium face.
(see images with yellow and grey units being fabricated at Schneider factory in Wroclaw)
There are 3,300 ceramic clad facade units on the buildings. Each unit contains 32 ceramic elements on a total of more than 400 components. The total number of tiles on the buildings is around 121,000.
