The women of Black Panther. Can I tell you how much I cried during this movie? Seeing these beautiful, intelligent, powerful dark skinned black women on the screen filled a hole inside of me. As a queen, a warrior, a spy, a scientist, the love interest. I grew up where films used the darker actresses as a comic relief, while the lighter actresses were praised for their beauty and goodness, they were the ones worthy of live and attention (see Martin, Coming to America, House Party, even The Proud Family). Women like me were not treated as beautiful or worthy. We were accessories. But Black Panther...This, these women, were me. They broke the stereotype and showed me on the screen. I am all of these: I am a warrior, a queen, intelligent and yes, I am love and beauty. I wish that I had seen movies like this as a little girl, it would have done so much for my self view. I am so happy that little girls, who don't fit the set standard like me, can see this and know that they too are the standard.
