At this age parents are like children. They need to be taken out and kept busy or else they get a little wild. Great to have you for the holidays @stevethevoice and Mom. @angie_the_gardens you and your team did a fantastic job. The exhibit featured many Inuit I know.

President and CEO of the museum, Meg Beckel wrote to us from Canada C3, an epic journey to connect Canadians and celebrate Canada150.⠀

I have the privilege to be an ambassador for Leg 14 of the Canada C3 expedition, as it heads down the British Columbia coast from the island community of Bella Bella to Campbell River on Vancouver Island. We are halfway through our journey and each day has been remarkable. It was a thrill to see the Hakai Institute in the Heiltsuk Nation. I look forward to learning more about the scientific research it supports and its impact on our understanding of our natural world. The natural beauty, rich biodiversity and passionate people in this part of Canada remind of the importance of the Museum’s mandate to inspire understanding and respect for nature, for a better natural future. ⠀

Visit the Canada C3 Hub at the Canadian Museum of Nature throughout the voyage to track the journey, watch videos and leave a message for the C3 team.⠀

Museum Research Scientist, Paul Sokoloff writes to us from Canada C3. Paul joined Leg 11 of the Canada C3 expedition, an epic journey to connect Canadians and celebrate Canada150.⠀

I was thrilled to visit Bernard Harbour during the Canada C3 Expedition. This fascinating place on the northwest corner of mainland Nunavut was the headquarters for the southern party of the Canadian Arctic Expedition (CAE) over 100 years ago. While working in our museum’s National Herbarium of Canada, I’ve come across many plants collected here by the CAE between 1913 and 1916.⠀

After stepping off our zodiac onto the cobble beach, I joined a few other expedition participants to hunt for plants and lichens – the first time that Bernard Harbour has been re-collected since the CAE. Next to the grass-covered foundations of the former camp headquarters, and in the shadow of an old RCMP outpost, we collected tall grasses and low purple legumes. These new collections, along with other specimens in our herbarium, will serve to document biodiversity through time in this important historical place, located right in the heart of the rapidly changing, low Arctic tundra.⠀

Senior Research Assistant, Paul Hamilton writes to us from Canada C3. Paul joined Leg 9 of the Canada C3 expedition, an epic journey to connect Canadians and celebrate Canada150.⠀

Hello from Devon Island!⠀

What can I say? Imagine being transported in time and space—including your emotions. That is the C3 experience.⠀

In terms of space, place yourself in an Arctic local community with three to four visiting ships. With residents of Pond Inlet, we meet in the community hall to hear the announcement of the new National Marine Water Reserve, the largest in Canada.⠀

Next we move west to Bylot Island. Canada Point is the place where Captain Bernier claimed the island for Canada. The date engraved in the rock, 1906, reminds me of our country's short history.⠀

Passing across Lancaster Sound, we see a polar bear sleeping on a small ice floe.⠀

And finally, on Beechey Island, we stand by small mounds of stones on a barren, gravel-stone beach that mark the graves of three members of the 1845 Franklin crew.⠀

All this in four days. What a bucket list of personal moments.⠀

From time and space in the Arctic, cheers. Paul Hamilton⠀

Collection manager, Zoology, Yemisi Dare writes to us from Canada C3. Yemisi joined Leg 8 of the Canada C3 expedition, an epic journey to connect Canadians and celebrate Canada150.⠀

It has been 2 days at sea in a breath-taking landscape of floating ice-bergs and turquoise water. As the ice-breaker Polar Prince has cut through and pushed up ice, I have watched cod fish leaping up out of the crevices, they were hiding in under the ice. We saw a polar bear off in the distance this morning and there is much hope that we will see more on this leg. No sign of any whales yet, but we are all learning to identify northern bird species. Tomorrow we go on land to sample plants and lichens, terrestrial insects and mites, and hopefully will find some neat invertebrates along the intertidal zone. What an amazing experience this is going to be! ⠀

The #LandscapesOfCanadaGardens on the western side of the #CanadianMuseumOfNature is designed to reflect different #ecological zones in Canada, including the #MammothSteppe during the last #IceAge. 🇨🇦🐘🌾☘️🌱🏛 "This outdoor exhibition space on the museum's property features about 60 native species of trees and plants (including #grasses, #sedges and mosses). They are species that are typically found in Canada's boreal forest, #Arctic tundra and prairie grasslands.
There is even a re-creation of the Mammoth Steppe, an Ice-Age ecosystem that is associated with Canada's #Yukon.
[...]
The Landscapes of Canada Gardens were created by the Canadian Museum of Nature in collaboration with CSW Landscape Architects.
[...]
"The Mammoth Steppe developed as a distinct ecological zone along the edge of the northern hemisphere's glaciers approximately 12 000 to 120 000 years ago, during the Quaternary Ice Age."

The outside of the #CanadianMuseumOfNature is pretty impressive, too! These are life-sized models of a #WoollyMammoth family that would have lived in #Canada during the last #IceAge, before the extinction of #mammoths. A group like this could have lived in #Yukon 12,000 years ago. (See www.tc.gov.yk.ca/publications/IceAgeMammalsOfYukon.pdf ) 🐘🏛🇨🇦 "Be sure to snap a photo with our mammoth family. These sculptures—based on real specimens— surround a tiny patch of plants. The male calf specimen was found in Siberia, the adult female in Yukon and the adult male in Alaska."

Giant Beavers once lived in Canada? Imagine a beaver the size of a bear! I'm sure a giant beaver could demand a #BeaverEmoji and get one immediately! #Muskox & child, in another #Arctic animal display in the new #ArcticGallery at the #CanadianMuseumOfNature in #Ottawa. ❄️🌐🐏 "#Muskoxen are renowned for their underfur of extremely fine and long hair. This thick undercoat is covered by long guard hairs and protects the muskox during long, cold winters. Humans prize it because it can be spun into very warm and lightweight fabrics.
"This shaggy, wild relative of sheep and goats lives in herds on the tundra in the Canadian Arctic. It inhabits eastern Greenland and the Arctic islands of Canada and has been successfully introduced into northern Quebec, western Greenland, northern Europe and Russia, and reintroduced into its former range in Alaska. Near extinction in the early 1900s, thanks to protection from hunting and re-introductions the populations are increasing."

A fascinating piece of #3D #art in the new #Arctic exhibit at the #CanadianMuseumOfNature in #Ottawa, "Ilurqusivut (Our Ways)" a #mural created by Nancy Saunders with painting by her, Karen Philips, & Adrian Baker. The #ArcticGallery is new for #Canada150, with many contributing partners. Well worth a visit! There's a great article on it here: http://iaq.inuitartfoundation.org/news-canada-goose-arctic-gallery/ 🇨🇦❄️🌊🌐 "The completed mural spans seven walls and is the first thing visitors experience when entering the new gallery space. The base of the work is a mix of bright, angular shapes, painted so that the overall design appears to protrude from the wall and into the gallery. Along the top of the wall a colourful Inuit tattoo design creates balances between graphic elements." @inuitartfoundation ❄️🌐🇨🇦 #Inuit #InuitArt #MuseumOfNature #myOttawa #LoveOttawa #museum #igersOttawa #instaottawa #communities #science #art #snow #education #Canada150 #CentretownOttawa #TrueNorth #cariboo #seal #nature #ArcticAtTheMuseum
