The revenge fight, this was hugely satisfying to watch. On December 3rd 2011, Miguel Cotto put his WBA Super Welterweight title on the line against Antonio Margarito at Madison Square Garden, New York. However, this was so much more than a world title bout.
Three years prior to this, the two would meet in a Welterweight title match at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. Margarito, who was nicknamed the 'Tijuana Tornado' would pick up an eleventh round TKO victory when Cotto's corner threw in the towel with less than a minute to go in the round. The fight was a classic, it was billed as 'the battle' and it didn't disappoint. After the fight Cotto said he was surprised at the power in Margarito's shots.
Six months later Margarito would put his newly crowned title on the line against Sugar Shane Mosley. Before the fight, Margarito was alleged to have had his hands wrapped with two foreign substances in them, these were Sulfur and Calcium, which are illegal. After re-wrapping his hands he would go on to lose via a 9th round knockout. But this wasn't the end of a disappointing night for the Mexican. He would have his boxing licence revoked for a year, and questions were asked whether he had used these illegal wraps before. Instantly, the attention turned to the Cotto fight which Margarito had just won.
Two things happened after this, calls for a rematch with Cotto got louder, and Margarito became public enemy number one in the boxing world.
The rematch was a great watch as Cotto dominated from the first bell, to the point where Margarito couldn't see out of his right eye, a combination of the corner and doctor stepped in to stop the fight at the beginning of the tenth round. 'Juanito' had his revenge. #Boxing #BoxingTales #TaleOfTheTapes #Revenge #Rematch #BoxingGold #BoxingIcon #BoxingLegend #MadisonSquareGarden #MSG #BoxingHistory #TheBattle #PuertoRico #Juanito #MiguelCotto #TijuanaTornado #AntonioMargarito #WBA #Super #Welterweight #Title #Champion
