Today the bodies of 810 dead waterbirds were laid out at Parliament in front of @danielandrewsmp's office. Eight hundred and ten. This is the largest collection of dead birds after the opening weekend of the duck shooting season in Victoria in the 31 years this campaign has been running. In the three years I have worked on this campaign I had never seen this amount of carnage, and many veterans before me have said this is one of the biggest massacres in decades. 68 of the rarest duck in the world, the Freckled duck, endangered and protected year round were among this display. These numbers are spanning just a few wetlands our teams were able to cover, with thousands more birds dead and wounded on other wetlands we could not get to. This is outrageous. This is illegal. This needs to end. Our hands are blood stained but the blood is on the hands of the shooters. They have no regard for conservation, no regard for the rules of the dying and archaic "sport" they're so avidly trying to protect. These are the lives we're trying our hardest to protect. Please contact @danielandrewsmp to let him know that this so called sport cannot continue for another year, and for as long as it does we will be there to rescue, collect and document these atrocities. 📸: @toltorg #cads #banduckshooting #animalsaustralia #duckrescue

Dear fans, meet Blue the Grey. I met him when I visited Animals Australia. #JCVD #TeamJCVD #animalsaustralia

Each year 70,000 dogs are brutally killed in Bali, Indonesia, according to an investigation spearheaded by #AnimalsAustralia (AA). The animals are strangled, bludgeoned, or poisoned and then fed to tourists who think they’re eating chicken meat. AA estimates seven times more dogs are killed in Bali yearly than in the Yulin Dog-Eating Festival in China.Evidence obtained by ABC’s program revealed a huge #dogmeattrade in Bali. An AA undercover investigator spent 4 months posing as a documentary maker to uncover details about the trade. Known simply as ‘Luke,’ the investigator said he started by getting to know key players in the unregulated industry, and “eventually, they invited me to join them as their gangs stole, hunted, poisoned, and killed dogs.”AA campaign director Lyn White said, “Tourists will walk down a street, they’ll see a street store selling satay but what they are not realizing is the letters RW on the store mean it is dog meat being served. They’re just sitting down ordering satay have no idea that they’re eating dog.”And it’s not just street vendors selling the meat to tourists as chicken, but restaurants as well. The #BaliAnimalWelfareAssociation, an organization working to rescue the animals from dog traders, has discovered 70 restaurants serving #dogmeat. It’s not illegal to consume dog meat in Bali. But White said it is illegal to kill animals cruelly or to consume meat tainted with poison. Luke described aggressive methods and said although he’s trained himself to cope with cruelty, in one village where he saw dogs being caught, nothing had prepared him for the brutality. On one occasion he witnessed hunters catching dogs by laying out fish meat laced with cyanide. For the first time in his career, he switched off his camera as he watched a puppy die over agonizing minutes. He said, “I sat stroking him as he died and found myself apologizing for the cruelty of my fellow man.”According to ABC, while some local people think dog meat is healthy, the practice isn’t a long-held tradition. Hindu leader Gusti Ngurah Harta is among those working to end the trade – he said Bali Hindus consider dogs to be a holy animal and that it’s upsetting.

Animals are our mates, not our food. #animalsaustralia

***MEL AND THE BALI DOG MEAT TRADE*** For those of you that have followed my Bali Animals Welfare Association (BAWA) journey, you may remember meeting Mel. Mel's owner sold him to the Bali dog meat trade earlier this year. If it wasn't for the bravery of a Balinese lady and the care of BAWA, Mel would have become another victim to this cruel and unimaginably evil trade.
I sat down with G. N. Bagus who is the information resources manger of BAWA to learn more about this cruel culture that is only now becoming more publicly known.
Talking with G. N. I learned that the dog meat trade is a tradition that originated in Java, Sumatra and Manado which was then brought over by its people. This trade is often a family run business with upwards of 70 stalls operating and selling dog meat at any one time.
Most of the time, dog meat is sold as chicken. Commonly, this is sold along the beaches of Bali.
As this is now coming to light here in Australia, most of you may be familiar with the brutal and deplorable way in which they kill dogs for their meat.
As part of tradition, the dog is skinned alive before being slaughtered. I learnt that the reason this is done is due to the deranged belief that the happiness needs to be drained from the dog and replaced with fear, as to make the meat taste better.
I asked G. N. If the government or the police are doing anything to put a stop to this disgusting and heartbreaking culture - unfortunately, I am told that they turn a blind eye to this trade and will only intervene if a dog is owned and stolen.
Only at this time will they investigate the theft of ones property, and not the brutal reason as to what became of their pet. When this happens, it is common for the family business to close down, lay low, and then reopen else where.
BAWA was the first organisation to investigate this crime and bring this information to the rest of the world. There are many organisations like @bawabali_official and @animalsaustralia
who are fighting to have this trade shut down and ended for good.
When travelling to Bali, please be cautious when eating chicken - ensure you are eating from a reputable establishmen

Vendors in #Bali have reportedly been feeding #dog #meat to unsuspecting tourists after telling them that it’s #chicken.

Activist group #AnimalsAustralia says that it captured video footage of vendors admitting to locals that the meat being sold was, in fact, dog flesh, but when the vendors talked to Australian tourists, they claimed the meat was “chicken satay” and lied even when a tourist specifically asked if the meat was from a dog.

The group says that stray dogs—as well as family companion animals—are victims of the dog-meat trade in Bali. The dogs are captured in the street. Their legs are tied, their mouths are taped shut, and they’re helpless and terrified as humans kill them in full view of each other. They’re shot, strangled, or beaten to death.

Eating or selling dog meat isn’t illegal in Indonesia, even though some of the dogs are poisoned, which could be a health risk to humans who eat the meat.

This isn’t the only situation in which people have unknowingly supported the killing of dogs. If you’ve ever purchased leather accessories, you could be wearing dog skin.

In #China, where a lot of the world’s leather comes from, a PETA Asia eyewitness investigation revealed that dogs are bludgeoned and killed so that their skin can be turned into leather shoes, gloves, belts, and other accessories. Products made from dog leather are exported throughout the world to be sold to unsuspecting customers.

If this upsets you, you’re not alone. You might be wondering how anyone could hurt “man’s best friend.” Could you look into the eyes of a kind and trusting dog and think that it’s OK to kill him or her for a snack or a leather belt?

But before lashing out at those who knowingly eat dog meat, we must take a look at our own culture. Although more and more Americans are going vegan after learning about #factoryfarming, most of us were raised believing it’s wrong to eat certain animals like horses, dogs, and cats, yet it’s considered acceptable to eat #cows, #pigs, and #chickens.

But while Americans are munching on their cheeseburgers, in other parts of the world, cows are considered sacred and it’s actually illegal to kill them

Paradise? In the Indonesian island of #Bali where natural resources are abundant, the weather is storybook perfect and the relaxed atmosphere attracts wealthy #tourists, visitors are unknowingly eating #dogmeat where innocent and beloved pets are stolen, bludgeoned and poisoned before being sold as food.
In an undercover investigation led by animal activist group #AnimalsAustralia, groups of #Balinesegangs captured and slaughtered #dogs and then sold the meat to tourists and lied about its content. According to the organization, the egregious #cruelty was explained as follows:
"Dumped in bamboo crates or plastic rice sacks, terrified dogs await the nightly slaughter with legs tied and mouths taped shut. They may languish like this for hours or days without food or water. One by one they will be brutally slaughtered in full view of their companions.
And business is booming. Year on year, seven times more dogs are slaughtered in Bali than in China’s notorious #YulinDogEatingFestival.” Investigations director Lyn White stated the horrible images of dogs being hanged on trees, shot and poisoned were purely heartbreaking. The group has since brought the issue to the attention of local authorities and have been meeting with government officials concerning the risks and dire #animalwelfare consequences of the #evil trade. And it’s not just the street vendors who are responsible for the #inhumanity and blatant #animalcruelty. Even fashionable restaurants serve dog meat. It is estimated more than 70,000 dogs are slaughtered each year serving at least 75 restaurants.
Whilst eating dog meat is not illegal in Bali, killing animals cruelly or eating meat contaminated with poison is against the law.Animals Australia’s Lyn White stated. “The dog-meat trade breaches animal cruelty laws and #foodsafety laws. That is a statement of fact,” she said. #enddogmeattrade #stopanimalabuse #nodogmeat #animals

About this #Balidog issue, it's been on the headlines news for sometimes.
I am Balinese and I against all form of animal cruelties. And those who just pointed their fingers out of our face as if we love to kill animal brutally, you just don't have any ideas how hurt and painful it is for us.
We love animals as much as you do. We take it seriously!! We want it to stop too!!!
You have no idea how worry we are letting our dogs and pets out of our sight. Heart broken; it's torn our hearts apart!!!
Might, you have no idea of our way of life. We respect the Almighty God; we respect human and all living creatures. We have our ways to respect and to love others; and animal in this case, we celebrated the animal welfare ceremony through a ritual namely Tumpek Kandang, as one of our ways to respect and to love. We uphold this rituals for generations every 210 days (6 months of Balinese calendar).
