Hamsi çorbası - anchovy soup. Ankara, October 2012.
When I hear "anchovy", I usually think of the very salty version in oil. However, you get the fresh deal in Turkey!
This was one of my first attempts at following a recipe in Turkish. The most confusing part was their system of measurement, which included "water glass" and "soup bowl". Also, "dessert spoon" in Turkish is the size of a teaspoon. And teaspoons? Tiny.
After an unsuccessful search for metric explanations, a colleague gave me the following advice: for "soup bowl" (as an example), go to your cupboard. Take out a soup bowl. Use that.
