Everything that we know today was once an idea, a thought that appeared in someone’s mind. As a student-teacher, I overstand the importance of being in a safe, comfortable, inspiring space while studying and visioning these abstract things that become real. With this Library re-imagination project, the #wewillrizetogether team will integrate ideas from the students as we help them to re-design their library. It’s not just about renovating a physical infrastructure, we also want to give attention to the social, emotional and spiritual beings that will inhabit the space. Give Thanks for all the beautiful souls all over the world who are helping to make all of this happen. The Black Panther screening, in addition to being a great vibe and experience for the youths, will allow us to engage and connect with them around conversations that empower a sense of identity and responsibility- in a cool way🙏🏾. In the week leading up to the screening, the teachers will engage the students with a ‘Wakanda curriculum’, a refresher course on the colonization and its impact on The Caribbean and North America until today. This which will prepare them with tools to analytically dissect the film with a more keen eye. After the film, each of the 250 youths will be asked to submit a review on the movie and experience, with suggestions from the film of elements of the production design they would like to see in the library. The key question we have asked them to answer during this program is ‘What is your legacy as a school, and as individuals?’ And I’ll pose the same to you... What’s yours? If you have ideas, tools or resources that can help us, reach out. Why not? #buildcomeunity #belove #wewillrizetogether #africandiaspora #eachoneteachone #rightyourstory #africaunite

On cinema screens, the cowboys of old were always white. In reality, the American West of the 1800s was traversed by an assortment of African American, Mexican and Native American cattle hands. One in four American cowboys was African American, while the number of Mexican cowboys was even greater. During the 17th and 18th century, many slaves were displaced from areas of Western Africa where cattle herding cultures. Many of these cowboys had been slaves in the South, working as stable hands and becoming skilled horse handlers.

Hollywood played a major part in dismissing the role of black cowboys. In 99% of Western cowboy films, there are no black cowboys. But the life and legacy of black cowboys is still alive. It's not a rare sight to see black cowboys riding around on horseback throughout the South.
