The Atlas Pullover pattern is available now!

The ‘Atlas’ collection came about when I was in a dark mental space. As many of us know, knitting has profound therapeutic properties. I channeled my feelings into knitting a shawl - a simple stockinette and lace shawl, knit with the most luxurious White Gum Wool. It was a healing project. With each stitch, my heart grew lighter and my quality of life improved. I knew I had to keep the good feelings going. I designed a second shawl, a semi-circle Pi shawl, using the same simple stitch pattern. The rich jewel tones of the yarn I used added a brightness and a sense of fun to what had previously been a soft, quiet experience. I felt like this was progress, but I knew I could take it further. With the Atlas Pullover, I created a garment that literally feels like wrapping yourself in love. The shawls were beautiful, but they are accessories - to be thrown on as an added comfort when life feels tough. But this sweater is like a full-body shield. Knit for yourself and you will feel surrounded by self-love; every stitch imbued with the knowledge that you put this time and effort into comforting yourself, knowing you deserve to feel good. Knit for another and know that every time they wear this sweater, they are reminded that someone loves them and wants them to succeed.

I truly believe that knitting can be life changing. How has knitting changed your life? It has shown me that taking the time to create beautiful things is not wasted time but truly the best way for me to spend my time - in active meditation, clarifying my thoughts and feelings. Share your experience with me in the comments!

I enjoyed making this sweater so much that I actually knitted it twice; once while writing the pattern, and once after the pattern had been edited and test-knit. I love knitting seamed garments - time seems to fly; because you finish each piece individually, your progress feels really measureable and concrete. I also really enjoy seaming - have a look back through my feed to see an indepth post I made about seamed garments!
—-
Will you be picking up a copy of the pattern tomorrow? I can’t wait to see what you create. I hope you love knitting this sweater as much as I did (both times), and I hope the pattern brings you joy for multiple projects!!

I just love how variegated yarn looks when it’s knit up in stockinette stitch. If you’ll be knitting the Atlas Pullover when the pattern comes put on Saturday, what yarn will you be using? Have you already decided? Or are you going to take advantage of the release-day discount and buy the pattern now, waiting for the perfect yarn to come along when the time is right?
—-
Here are my yarn recommendations (the pattern uses 4 ply/fingering weight):
✨ the pattern was designed using @knit_picks Hawthorne yarn. This colourway is Astoria - a lightly variegated grey yarn. There are a few colours to choose from in the Hawthorne range, and I think KnitPicks is quite affordable for the quality yarn that you get.
✨ one of my test knitters used a speckled yarn. It came put beautifully! You want to make sure the yarn you choose isn’t too busy, so that the lace pattern on the front panel isn’t overshadowed by the colours in your yarn. But a pop of brightness here and there is more than welcome!
✨ I think this pattern would look stunning worked up in a solid colour, letting the lace pattern really speak for itself and become the standout feature of the design. As much as I love variegated yarns, I’d love to see this in a solid too!
—-
I do NOT recommend heavily variegated yarns for this pattern. As I mentioned above, too much colour in the yarn can distract from the lace. Your best bet is a solid, semi-solid, or speckled yarn. You can use a variegated yarn like I’ve chosen here, but make sure all the shades used are from the same colour family (i.e., these are all greys). I can’t wait to see what you choose!

‘So what do I get when I buy the Atlas Pullover pattern on Saturday? Just a PDF? Why am I paying so much money for a simple PDF?’
—-
I haven’t been asked this question yet, but I know it’s a fairly common thought in the knitting community. And I don’t think you’re wrong to wonder, on the surface. So I want to go deep and explain what you REALLY get when you buy this pattern from me:
✨ a PDF copy of the pattern. This includes many photos, sizing charts, diagrams and in depth explanations of the stitch patterns used. It’s also beautifully and professionally formatted.
✨ links to external tutorials that I’ve found online. I don’t want you to waste your time googling how to do a certain technique, maybe finding sub-par instructions that leave you unhappy with your knitting experience. So I’ve done the hard work for you and combed the internet to find the best instructions to help you create this gorgeous sweater.
✨ links to video tutorials I’ve created. For some of the techniques used, I couldn’t find a great tutorial. So I made them myself. These video tutorials are available on my website, created specifically for this pattern.
✨ the confidence that comes from knowing the pattern has been professionally tech-edited. I paid a lot of money to have this pattern graded into multiple sizes and edited to ensure every piece of math is correct. Every stitch count, every row count, every increase and every decrease has been double checked by a professional. You can be confident that the pattern will work when you knit it up. I know how frustrating it can be when you are trying to knit a garment that just doesn’t work! You will not have that experience with my patterns.
✨ ongoing pattern support, forever. If you have a question about the pattern, want to double check something, or are not confident in a technique, you can contact me at any time, and I will endeavour to help you as soon as possible (within reason!).

So there you go - all that value packed into one little PDF.

I am soo excited for the release of the Atlas Pullover pattern on Saturday! Here’s what one of my test knitters had to say about the pattern:
—-
“Your pattern was so well written and easy to follow. […] I really liked your use of videos and photo tutorials for the newer or harder to explain techniques. I’ve done mattress stitch before but only once for a toy for my son who it didn’t matter if it was perfect or not. It was very helpful for me to see it in photo/video form to learn the skill before attempting on a garment. I’ve always avoided seamed garments in the past because I was afraid of the mattress stitch. After this pullover, I’m not afraid of it any more. I also really liked that you included stitch counts after your decrease or increase sections…sooooo helpful! […] The cap sleeves are a nice touch. I really like how they look compared to just the raglan style yoke. I really did enjoy knitting this and I get lots of compliments. I will be knitting another for the fall in yarn I had reserved for another sweater. […] This was a lot of fun!”
—-
It is soo heartwarming to me to read such positive feedback, and I hope it gives you the confidence to grab a copy of the pattern and give it a go! I know it can be scary to trust a ‘new’ designer when it comes to garments, but I want to reassure you that I have complete confidence in my pattern, and so do my test knitters. You can also rest easy knowing that all of my patterns are professionally tech-edited - by the time the pattern gets to you, any wrinkles that may have slipped through the cracks during the pattern writing process have been ironed out by those who do such ironing for a living. So go forth and knit with confidence this Saturday!!!

I mentioned in a previous post that the Atlas Pullover is knit in separate pieces, from the bottom up. The exception to this is the sleeves. Do you like seaming and setting in sleeve caps? If you do, I’m impressed! I HATE setting in sleeves, and I’m terrible at it! So I decided to use a technique that @arohaknits introduced me to, where you pick up stitches around the armhole after you seam the body together, and you knit the sleeve top down, in the round, using short rows to shape the sleeve cap. See how perfectly fitted the sleeve cap is in this pic? It’s the short rows! And because you pick up stitches and work from those, you never have to worry about the sleeve cap being slightly off centre, or too bunched up on one side and too stretched out on the other side.
—-
Worried about the short rows? Never fear! I’ve included a link to possibly the best tutorial on this technique that exists, which explains what you’re doing in-depth and comes with super helpful photos. It’s by @bygumbygolly and I refer back to it all the time. You’ll love it, I promise!!

The lace panel on the front of the Atlas Pullover is called ‘Ostrich Plumes’ and it’s one of my favourite lace patterns. You only work the lace stitches on every fourth row (the rest are stockinette) and it has such a cool effect, causing the fabric to undulate and stretch within the pattern. I think it’s stunning and I just love knitting it! It’s so soothing, but SO effective.

The Atlas Pullover is coming! I’ll be releasing the pattern on Saturday the 4th of August (next weekend). Can you believe its August already?! It’s still cool enough in Melbourne for this gorgeous sweater, and those in the northern hemisphere can plan ahead for winter by picking up this pattern with a discount (for newsletter subscribers only 😉) on release day.
—-
Knit in separate pieces from the bottom up, the Atlas Pullover is knit mostly in stockinette with a lace panel up the centre front. I’ve included six sizes (30.5” - 49” bust) so I hope your size is included! I know it can be hard for people of diverse body shapes to find patterns to fit, so I wanted my first garment pattern to be as inclusive as possible. Please let me know if there are different sizes I should consider next time!

Omg.. I was back for a week, but the renovation works needed at our new house practically exploded on us! We wanted to replace the down lights, so my husband’s electrician friend came over to help us out... and we found out that all the lighting had been illegally wired! There was an extension cord INSIDE THE WALL! So unfortunately we were not able to proceed with our basic plan of painting before we moved in - we were forced to move in even before the lights were fixed. So the past few weeks we have spent every moment outside of work trying to unpack, paint, patch holes in walls... It’s been a challenge! So unfortunately I had to pop e street knits on hold for a short while longer. But things have settled slightly - one room is almost finished (one more wall needs its final coat of paint, and that’s it!!) and then we can finally start working on the main living area. So I think it’s time for me to get back on top of things here! I’m so sorry to leave you all dangling with tempting photos of this sweater but no way for you to get your hands on the pattern. Well, I promise I’m working on getting it published as soon as possible! Please bear with me - I’ve lost the routine, but I’m still here and you’re all in my thoughts. I can’t wait to get properly back on track with everything!!

I am not sure if I’m in the minority here, but I enjoy seaming sweaters. Are you a piece-maker who loves to seam? Or do you hate sewing so much that you put in the time and effort to translate a flat pattern to a knitted-in-the-round pattern?
—-
I designed the Atlas Pullover to be a seamed sweater for a number of reasons. ☝️One, I enjoy seaming. I am a multi-stitchual woman. I love all things fibre related, and that includes various types of sewing. So I find it enjoyable to mattress stitch up the sides of a sweater and watch the stitches ‘zip’ together when I tighten my yarn. ✌️Two, seamed garments have more structure than seamless garments. Knitting in the round is an incredible invention (and I do love it!!) but the weight that garments put on their fabric can’t be ignored - seams help keep everything in place, and stop your sweaters from stretching out of shape. They also assist with the drape of a garment - the side seams in the Atlas Pullover contribute to the shape of the garment (slightly flared around the hips) and help to keep it shapeful rather than shapeless. 🤘Finally, I am a product knitter. Sometimes, knitting a sweater in the round can feel endless. The awesome thing about seamed garments is that they seem to fly by much quicker. In the time it takes you to get from the bottom hem to the underarms on a seamless sweater, you could have already finished the back piece and started on the front of a seamed sweater! Avoiding the miles and miles of stockinette is a great reason to choose a seamed sweater (although I can’t say I miss purling when I’m working in the round!!).

So am I in the minority? Which do you prefer?

I absolutely love the Ostrich Plume stitch! This is my third design utilising this stitch pattern, after the Atlas Shawl and the Atlas Pi Shawl. It is such a simple lace to work, but it adds such incredible depth to your work. The undulating fabric it creates is a delight to knit (creating funny bobbles on the back and pinching together on the front), but blocking it is when the magic really happens! The fabric smoothes out and you’re left with the most beautiful arcs and fans, and a supple drape created by the openwork. Ostrich Plumes (a cousin of the ever-popular Old Shale) is definitely my favourite stitch pattern!
—-
What’s your favourite stitch pattern? Do you keep an eye out for projects that make use of a certain stitch because you enjoy playing with that fabric? Or do you dive in to any and all textures, looking for something different each time? Or are you carefully exploring the infinite world of knitting, taking each pattern as it comes?

It has a strangely wide neck band (140 stitches?!) and needs blocking. It sure is pretty tho. #atlaspullover

I recently discovered that the yarn I knitted my Atlas Pullover sample in was a discontinued colourway! So I worked up a new sample in the same yarn (@knit_picks Hawthorne) in a different colourway - this one’s called ‘Astoria’ and it’s a gorgeous cool grey with slight tonal variegation. I think I like this sample even better than the first! As I mentioned in my last post, it’s best to choose a solid or a semi-solid for this pattern (a light speckling works well too!) due to the lacy panel on the front. Too much variation in colour will lead to your efforts with the lace going to waste, as more intricate stitches can become hidden in amongst too many colours.
—-
What yarn will you choose to knit this sweater up in? As we’re coming up to that Spendigo time of year again, it might be a good idea to start putting together some ideas so you can grab what you need there! I need to stock up on some local yarns myself!!

After an incredible hot spell, we're having sweater weather again here in Oslo. 🌧️ Einar and I are both wearing our Brooklyn tweed design sweaters in yarn by one of my favourite LYS, @picklesoslo 💕 Mine is a worn thin #elmontsweater knit in #picklesmerinotweed and Einar is wearing his new #atlaspullover knit from scraps of #picklespurewool 😊 (Please excuse him, he had an important phone call to deal with 😂🤗) #allyouknitislove #sweaterweather #brooklyntweed #btinthewild #motherandchild #slowfashion #theartofslowliving #icelandicknitting #handmadewardrobe #knittersofig
