Evening peeps!
.
I missed yesterday’s #booksandhotdrinkstuesday post, which was on hyped books that we didn’t see the fuss about.
I nearly posted about Autumn by Ali Smith - it’s good, but not the life changing book I had been head to believe - but then I thought about The Scots Quair trilogy by Grassic Gibbon.
Admittedly I haven’t read this in quite a few years, but I remember not falling in love with it - I think I felt a sense of disconnect with it. Yet it’s widely adored, so perhaps I should reread? Opinions please!

Finished Sunset Song with the #myacpl book club last week, working on the final two of the trilogy.

I feel I should issue an apology to my parents, as I promised I would get rid of books rather than accumulate more before moving back in #oops #bookstagram #summerreading #daisies #shakespeare #lolita #nabokov #ascotsquair #reading #tbr #bookhaul #charitybookshop

Day 2 of the #yarnlovechallenge is #volume and to me that means books! I love craft books and have many. These are my current resources since I have been learning embroidery. But my favourite book... kindle! I really don’t understand the opposition I hear for reading on a kindle. I can get just as drawn into what I’m reading on a kindle as with a paper book. My current read is A Scots Quair by Lewis Grassic Gibbon about a girl growing up in a remote community in northern Scotland. What has reading got to do with yarn... Knitting slots into my life where knitting isn’t possible! #reading #books #kindle #ascotsquair #lewisgrassicgibbon #embroidery #knitting

“You hated the land and the coarse speak of the folk and learning was brave and fine one day and the next you’d waken with the peewits crying across the hills, deep and deep, crying in the heart of you and the smell of the earth in your face, almost you’d cry for that, the beauty of it and the sweetness of the Scottish land and skies...” ~ Lewis Grassic Gibbon 🌿🌿🌿🌿🌿🌿🌿🌿🌿🌿🌿🌿🌿🌿

Robert Louis Stevenson, the Edinburgh novelist, wrote this poem in 1892 about Scottish Jacobite sentiments after the Battle of Culloden... beautiful and sad.
🌿🌿🌿🌿🌿🌿🌿🌿🌿🌿🌿🌿🌿 Sing me a song of a lad that is gone,
Say, could that lad be I?
Merry of soul he sailed on a day
Over the sea to Skye
🌿🌿🌿🌿🌿🌿🌿🌿🌿🌿🌿🌿🌿
Mull was astern, Rum on the port,
Eigg on the starboard bow;
Glory of youth glowed in his soul;
Where is that glory now?
🌿🌿🌿🌿🌿🌿🌿🌿🌿🌿🌿🌿🌿
Give me again all that was there,
Give me the sun that shone!
Give me the eyes, give me the soul
Give me the lad that’s gone!
🌿🌿🌿🌿🌿🌿🌿🌿🌿🌿🌿🌿🌿
Billow and breeze, islands and seas,
Mountains of rain and sun,
All that was good, all that was fair,
All that was me is gone...

Kind of a cheat for #riotgrams since the three word title #AScotsQuair is really 3 novels all with two-word titles. But it's great and has a cover by one of my absolute favourite artists, #JamesCowie. #book #novel #fiction #Scotland #Scottishliterature #LewisGrassicGibbon #SunsetSong #CloudHowe #GreyGranite #1930sliterature #30s #penguinbooks #penguinmodernclassics #bookstagram #reading #literature #paperback

Scottish literature.... I read quite a few Scottish titles over the summer. Sunset Song is the oldest of the three (published in 1932) and is apparently much loved for its nostalgia....I personally found it a bit tedious 🙈 and droned on about farming way too much for my liking. The Crow Road and Trainspotting were published in 1992 and 1993 respectively. I thoroughly enjoyed both of them but I think The Crow Road was my favourite. I really enjoyed the way the story looped and twisted back and forth between two generations of families, uncovering the family secrets.

Visited the #grassicgibboncentre near #Arbuthnot. A small museum dedicated to the author #lewisgrassicgibbon. It is quite charming, I loved it! #sunsetsong #cloudhowe #ascotsquair #howeothemearns #scottishwriting #scottishliterature

We love our Scottish books!

Hello ☺️! .
I am having a rather pleasant afternoon, drinking my body weight in coffee and plunging into my latest purchase 📚. .
I finally picked up Sunset Song by Lewis Grassic Gibbon yesterday. I have been considering it for ages but this cover completely won me over! I like to think of it as an early, self-birthday present 😏. .
Scottish literature is not something that I have ever branched into. I have read one book by a Scottish author, but I cannot recall who it was 😅. However I would really like to start reading more Scottish novels. If you know any good novels/authors, please let me know! .
Apparently this book is the first in a trilogy called A Scots Quair, however I cannot find the books individually 😂. They sell all 3 as one book but I couldn't say no to this cover! .
Anyway, happy Tuesday ☺️💕 #bookish #bookworm #books #bookstagram #bookinsta #reading #ascotsquair #sunsetsong #lewisgrassicgibbon #coffee #bookaddict

Time for an evening cuppa cinnamon tea+whisky=sleepy. Currently reading "A Scot's Quair" by Lewis Grassic Gibbon and really loving it although I frequently have to stop to Google some of the words. Sorry, I'm American. #tea #famousgrouse #bedtime #lewisgrassicgibbon #ascotsquair #cuppa #bedtime
