@Regran_ed from @lassiterstrategic - Tuskegee Airmen pilot, WWII hero dies in Harlem at 100

Much respect. Because of you, myself and others who looked like us had the opportunity to serve our country freely, & with honor. I salute you sir. Rest in peace.

Wilfred DeFour fought discrimination at home. Then he fought the Nazis in Europe.
He helped America win both wars.

DeFour was one of the last of the famed Tuskegee Airmen — members of all-black units that included pilots, technicians, mechanics and other support personnel who signed up for the Army Air Force to fight in WWII. He died Saturday at age 100.

Day 8 of Advent and we have a rare USAAF oxygen mask heater. These were used by bomber crews to prevent freezing of the mask valves at altitude. No doubt a requirement for Father Christmas in his sleigh as well. Now live on the website.

The direction and trajectory of his life changed on this day in 1941. Thank you, Pa, for answering the call when your country needed you. #pearlharborday #greatestgeneration #armyairforce #grandfather #pacifictheater #wwii

On the morning of December 7, 1941, 21 year old pilot instructor Cornelia Fort was giving a lesson to a student in the airspace near Pearl Harbor when her plane was zoomed by a military aircraft. As the plane pulled away, Fort noticed the markings on the wing were not American. As the plane turned back toward her, Fort immediately realized that the island was under attack by Japanese military forces. Fort took command of the little plane, landing safely at a nearby air field as the Japanese plane attempted to strafe them. In early 1942, Fort was an early recruit in the Women’s Auxiliary Ferry Service, the predecessor to the Women’s Airforce Service Pilots. The WAFs numbered 25 and were tasked with ferrying military aircraft from plants and repair depots to points of debarkation, flew training missions, and tested new and repaired planes. Women were not allowed to fly outside of the United States. Fort and her colleagues flew every type of military aircraft during their service, including prototype jets. The WASP numbered 915 on the day they were disbanded in December 20, 1944. On March 21, 1943, Fort was flying in a formation of BT-13s when a male pilot engaged in stunt flying, causing a collision between their planes. While he was able to maintain control, she could not and her plane went into an irreversible dive. Fort was killed in the ensuing crash. The women pilots of WWII were civil servants at the time and no financial support was given for death in service. Fort was one of 38 WAFS/WASPS who died in service to the country. The women would take a collection amongst themselves to help defray the costs of death to the families. The women aviators did not receive retroactive recognition as veterans of the armed services until 1977. In 2009, the WASP received the Congressional Gold Medal for their service. #pearlharbor #womenfly #womanpilot #wasp #waf #aac #armysircorps #armyairforce #corneliafort #historyforthewin #alwaysremember #infamy #december7 #worldwar2 #worldwarii #womenshistory #historynerd #historygeek #neverforget #equality #inequality#warbird #hawaii #pearlharborday #veteran #veterans
