The Pikunii (Blackfeet) Nation is being represented within the Medical field by Theodore (Ted) Weatherwax. Ted’s MD status at #UNM has his spring semester packed with studying for the boards – USMLE Step 2 and being a medical officer. When he’s taking some time for himself he munches out at Taj Mahal or jams to anything heavy metal – he also doesn’t mind spending time reading anything from one his favorite authors, Brandon Sanderson. Ted’s making his way through Med School to become a surgeon for the Navy. He plans to focus on learning modular surgical techniques & developing ways to create operating theaters without significant infrastructure (whew!). He also intends to utilize his salary to establish scholarships in hopes of training tribal members to become scrub techs and receiving their MS degrees in Anesthesiology. Once Ted can achieve this dream he’d like to take it further by establishing a team to perform surgery in any environment to provide surgical needs to rural tribes throughout the greater Rocky Mountain Region. Get it, Ted! Spend some time getting to know Ted when he takes over @aissunm Snapchat! #NativesInMedicine #AISSLobo #GivingBack
