Nothing like a little @catalystathletics programming to help get me back on the platform again. 4 sets of each weight @60-65-70% of your 1RM. The complex was a 3 position clean series 1-from the floor, 1-from below the knee, 1- mid thigh followed by 1 jerk. What a great weekend at the Arnold, needless to say I am pretty happy with how I did, totaled 210 kg hitting a 90kg/198lbs snatch and 120kg/264lbs clean and jerk. While I got called for the press out at 96 kilo snatch and missed a 125 kg jerk twice, looks like I'll just have to do another competition! I am continuing to learn and grow each day and happy to see the progress I have made thus far!!! I would also like to thank @jackedhippie for all coaching and time he has spent helping me be better! Got some big lifts in store for this week!

This morning, I hit a set of 5-second eccentric front squats for 4 reps at 151kg (332lb). Legs actually felt strong today, as it was again my upper back that decided to crumble like a graham cracker.

The hellacious squats made the rest of the lift difficult to say the least, but I did manage an ISO snatch double at 110kg (242lb). Programming will forever be a work in progress, but I don't mind being my own guinea pig...looks like the upper back is a new weakness to attack next block!

1st session back in on the clean and jerk after being chained to the squat rack for a while and having rolled my ankle. Hit a 4kg pb of 116kg. Got some big lifts in store for this week!

Just beginning week three of the new program and I'm already feeling the leg strength starting to return.

Yesterday's session began with sets of six 5 second eccentric front squats...last set at 140kg (308lb). This wasn't a PR, but I do believe it ties my previous best of this variation.

Snatch triples with an ISO below the knee at 104.5kg (230lb) also felt decent.

Definitely liking how things are coming along!

Nothing really special about Saturday's training session in regards to loads lifted (though the company kept that day was pretty stellar @pbosco53 @kaitibenz), but I was pretty excited with the day given the circumstances.

Started the session with some power snatch triples at 75% (97kg). This was followed by cleans from a deficit at 85% (137kg), and then front squat + jerk doubles at the same weight.

I will say, cleans from the deficit are probably the scariest thing I've ever done in the weightroom...somewhere along the line I developed this habit of jumping 5 ft backwards when I clean...so I figured what better way to fix a problem than to put my life on the line living on the edge (well maybe not my life, but definitely my Achilles πŸ™ˆ). All joking aside, I'm excited to once again get my training back to what brings me the most success...volume, volume, volume. Time and time again, I learn the hard way that intensity just doesn't do it for me.

Saturday's lift felt great, and was just what I needed to help build some momentum for the coming weeks. Now, it's time to see how long I can keep my head screwed on properly.

I have some big goals for the remainder of 2017...gotta keep my eyes on the prize!

Clean and jerks from yesterday, 153, 157 (miss), and 157kg (345lb). While I ended up finishing strong on my snatches, I fell a little shy of my clean and jerk goals.
My aim for this meet was 160 kilos or higher (my previous best in competition is 159, and I have both cleaned and jerked 160 on separate occasions in training). Unfortunately, I saw the lights grow dim on my second attempt and it got the best of me.
On my third attempt however, I was prepared for such nonsense and decided I was going to make my jerk or pass out. There would be no in between. Luckily I made it 😬! My clean and jerks have remained quite a blunder for me over the last few years. I first hit 157 in competition three long years ago, and have only been able to add two kilos since. Conversely, my snatch has gone up 12 kilos in that same timeframe.

By no means disappointed with this meet, just not satisfied either. Still riding high from an awesome weekend with our team, and looking forward to getting right back to the training tomorrow!

First off, I cannot emphasize enough how proud I am of our team. Sharing in your successes and triumphs on the platform gives me an incredible sense of purpose and an unparalleled level of fulfillment.

So thank you to all who put your faith in me as a coach, and for your willingness to constantly test the limits of your abilities (physical, mental, and emotional). I am grateful to grow alongside you all.

I walked into the competition today with my sights on a 130 kilo snatch. The plan was to open at 122, and then follow up with 127, before taking the shot at 130.

Well...I subconsciously opted to make things a bit more difficult for myself by missing my opener.

Knowing that another miss would likely kill my chances at 130, I chose to take 125 on my second attempt despite the risk.

Thankfully, my second attempt was a success. With the "get on the board jitters" out of the way, I knew that 130 was finally within my grasps.
I took the 130kg (286lb) on my third attempt and was able to make it happen...a two kilo PR over my 128 in March.
Though progress feels slow at times, I have learned through the years that ever kilo counts, and I was excited to build on my total.

#tbt to last year's Baystate games. Hit a PR snatch at 127 and smoked 155 on my last clean and jerk attempt (not a PR at the time). Goal for Sunday is 130/162 (165 if I'm feeling crazy). So amped for our team this weekend!

Got my 80% work in on Saturday in preparation for the Baystate games next weekend.

Though I do allow for minor alterations meet to meet, my training in the week leading up to a competition remains notably similar for each one. In doing this, I am best able to gauge my level of preparedness for the competition platform and, in turn, what I need to do to be able to perform at my best.
All things considered, I feel quite ready for this meet, and I am looking forward to hitting my goals on Sunday!

I walked into the training room today with my heart set on a 130 kilo snatch. After a trio of unscheduled misses at 120 and frustrations mounting, I knew I had to take a deep breath, regroup, and remember how to snatch again.

With my mind right, I smoked the 120 and then made a smooth rep at 124.5kg/274lb (the first rep in the video). I decided my next attempt would be for a half kilo PR at 128.5kg. I took three shots at it, narrowly missing each one (please excuse my color commentary 😬), before opting to move on.

Disappointed, but not deterred. I know I have the 130 in me and I am going to hit it at the Baystates. Feeling ready, less than two weeks out. Here. We. Go.

Managed an ugly 152kg (334lb) clean and jerk yesterday, just two weeks out from the Baystate Games.

Was definitely hoping for more, but not completely disappointed given how exhausted I was.

Time to start dialing it in!

Power snatch + hang snatch PR at 110kg (242lb). What a huge mental victory for me this morning... Haven't power snatched in a month...my left shoulder was just getting so bad that it was becoming extremely counterproductive to do so.

About a week and a half ago, getting frustrated and desperate for resolution, I decided to fiddle around with my snatch grip. Stability in my left arm has long been an issue for me, as the elbow tends to buckle under heavy loads.
I have done prehab/rehab drills for years ad nauseam, attempting to bring better symmetry to my receiving position, without much success. Little did I realize I would be able to turn to basic physics for a potential solution.

Moving my grip about a half inch to the left (so that my left hand is about an inch from the sleeve, and my right hand is about two inches away) seems to be doing wonders for my snatches.

This makes it so that a slightly higher percentage of the weight will be to the right side, and seems to have created a much more stable, balanced, and most importantly, pain-free (or at least less painful πŸ™ƒ) receiving position.

The quest for mastery is a beautiful thing. I've been competing in weightlifting for over seven years now, and have partaken in just general weight training for over two decades.
Despite this, I am still learning new things everyday about my own body and the sport of weightlifting. The fact that there is still so much to learn at a point so deep into this journey is quite uplifting (pun maybe kinda intended 😬). My apologies for the rant, but to close out my thoughts, I encourage everyone out there to seek mastery in something. If you don't share my passion for lifting, than it can be in so many other areas...playing an instrument, artistry, writing, automotive work, craftsmanship, public speaking, or maybe some other athletic endeavor.

Whatever you may choose to seek mastery in, I promise you it will be one of the most rewarding and enlightening journeys in your life, just as weightlifting has been in mine.

Had a blast training at @thedojo_wl this morning! Fully decked out in my Cap gear to celebrate the day, I walked in with some clear goals in mind.

I was on a mission to PR in my power clean today, but just didn't have it in me, as 144.5kg kept sinking me faster than the titanic.
Knowing I couldn't leave the visit without doing something productive, I at least managed a 1 kilo PR on my jerk, finally making a smooth 160kg (352lb). Big thanks to Dan and the rest of the Dojo crew for hosting Paul, Hunter, and I. Loved the energy and we will surely be back for more!

This past week of training was just what I needed to get my feet back under me. I took advantage of my deload week and really scaled back my volume and intensity so that I could start building some confidence back into my lifts.
Yesterday I just did some relatively easy work at 85% on the competition lift variations, and it felt pretty smooth.
Time to dial it in for the Bay State Games!

Jerks from yesterday's training. My second time making 150kg (330lb) for a double in a 15 day span.

It feels good to be consistently hitting 90+ percentage weights. One of the things I've long struggled with is training at high intensities on several occasions throughout a 4 week cycle. Definitely feeling more primed to hit the heavy weights repeatedly right now.
