Got my 80% work in on Saturday in preparation for the Baystate games next weekend.

Though I do allow for minor alterations meet to meet, my training in the week leading up to a competition remains notably similar for each one. In doing this, I am best able to gauge my level of preparedness for the competition platform and, in turn, what I need to do to be able to perform at my best.
All things considered, I feel quite ready for this meet, and I am looking forward to hitting my goals on Sunday!

I walked into the training room today with my heart set on a 130 kilo snatch. After a trio of unscheduled misses at 120 and frustrations mounting, I knew I had to take a deep breath, regroup, and remember how to snatch again.

With my mind right, I smoked the 120 and then made a smooth rep at 124.5kg/274lb (the first rep in the video). I decided my next attempt would be for a half kilo PR at 128.5kg. I took three shots at it, narrowly missing each one (please excuse my color commentary 😬), before opting to move on.

Disappointed, but not deterred. I know I have the 130 in me and I am going to hit it at the Baystates. Feeling ready, less than two weeks out. Here. We. Go.

Managed an ugly 152kg (334lb) clean and jerk yesterday, just two weeks out from the Baystate Games.

Was definitely hoping for more, but not completely disappointed given how exhausted I was.

Time to start dialing it in!

1st session back in on the clean and jerk after being chained to the squat rack for a while and having rolled my ankle. Hit a 4kg pb of 116kg. Happy with that especially considering the amount of heavy volume I have been doing. Power snatch + hang snatch PR at 110kg (242lb). What a huge mental victory for me this morning... Haven't power snatched in a month...my left shoulder was just getting so bad that it was becoming extremely counterproductive to do so.

About a week and a half ago, getting frustrated and desperate for resolution, I decided to fiddle around with my snatch grip. Stability in my left arm has long been an issue for me, as the elbow tends to buckle under heavy loads.
I have done prehab/rehab drills for years ad nauseam, attempting to bring better symmetry to my receiving position, without much success. Little did I realize I would be able to turn to basic physics for a potential solution.

Moving my grip about a half inch to the left (so that my left hand is about an inch from the sleeve, and my right hand is about two inches away) seems to be doing wonders for my snatches.

This makes it so that a slightly higher percentage of the weight will be to the right side, and seems to have created a much more stable, balanced, and most importantly, pain-free (or at least less painful πŸ™ƒ) receiving position.

The quest for mastery is a beautiful thing. I've been competing in weightlifting for over seven years now, and have partaken in just general weight training for over two decades.
Despite this, I am still learning new things everyday about my own body and the sport of weightlifting. The fact that there is still so much to learn at a point so deep into this journey is quite uplifting (pun maybe kinda intended 😬). My apologies for the rant, but to close out my thoughts, I encourage everyone out there to seek mastery in something. If you don't share my passion for lifting, than it can be in so many other areas...playing an instrument, artistry, writing, automotive work, craftsmanship, public speaking, or maybe some other athletic endeavor.

Whatever you may choose to seek mastery in, I promise you it will be one of the most rewarding and enlightening journeys in your life, just as weightlifting has been in mine.

Had a blast training at @thedojo_wl this morning! Fully decked out in my Cap gear to celebrate the day, I walked in with some clear goals in mind.

I was on a mission to PR in my power clean today, but just didn't have it in me, as 144.5kg kept sinking me faster than the titanic.
Knowing I couldn't leave the visit without doing something productive, I at least managed a 1 kilo PR on my jerk, finally making a smooth 160kg (352lb). Big thanks to Dan and the rest of the Dojo crew for hosting Paul, Hunter, and I. Loved the energy and we will surely be back for more!

This past week of training was just what I needed to get my feet back under me. I took advantage of my deload week and really scaled back my volume and intensity so that I could start building some confidence back into my lifts.
Yesterday I just did some relatively easy work at 85% on the competition lift variations, and it felt pretty smooth.
Time to dial it in for the Bay State Games!

Jerks from yesterday's training. My second time making 150kg (330lb) for a double in a 15 day span.

It feels good to be consistently hitting 90+ percentage weights. One of the things I've long struggled with is training at high intensities on several occasions throughout a 4 week cycle. Definitely feeling more primed to hit the heavy weights repeatedly right now.

Had six sets of power clean doubles earlier this morning. I decided to go for 141kg (310lb) to beat my previous power clean PR double from two weeks ago.
I managed an ugly starfish on the first rep, and so on the second, I really worked to keep my feet in. The rep unfortunately sunk me...you can tell how satisfied I was by the look on my face.
Was still excited to hit 3 sets above the 134 mark. Should be good for the 145 power clean in two weeks!

This week has been a struggle to say the least. Been battling something nasty for the better part of a week now, and boy am I looking forward to turning the corner and feeling healthy again.

Haven't been able to get much training in this week. Last week's deload had set me up to really hit it hard in the weightroom, which, unfortunately, I have not been able to capitalize on this week.
The one bright spot was on Tuesday, when I was able to muster up some energy and at least see what I had in me. Always inspired by the Dan John book, "Can You Go?" I decided that being sick was no excuse to not do what I set out to do.

At the start of this training block, I set goals of power cleaning 140kilos (308lb) for a double, and jerking 150kg (330lb) for a double...both PRs I was able to achieve on Tuesday (at a pathetic body weight of 198lb). Luckily for me, all I had to give that day was just enough to hit those numbers. I then shut it down for the rest of the lift as I had nothing left in me.

Probably a stubborn thing to do, but at least the PRs gave me something to be excited about this week. Rack 1/2 squats from this past weekend at 210kg (462lb) x 3. Looking to back squat this for a double next block. Partial squats from the rack are one of my favorite drills for preparing the back for heavy squats.
Since strength it joint angle specific, the shortened range of motion won't do much to help your leg strength in the deep squat. However, it definitely helps with confidence under a heavy load and prepares the supporting musculature for the work that is to come.
Give these a try during an intense strength block...just don't forget to squat to depth at another point during the week!

Had to give the new shoes a test drive today. It was a brutal lift, but felt a million times better than last week.

Hit a 134.5kg (296lb) power clean double from the blocks. Definitely think I have 140 in me on a good day. Also did some not-so-explosive depth jumps (at least I looked heroic 😬). Jerk triples also felt really light at 134.5kg. The rest of the lift was death by deadlifts and squats...fun times for sure!
