NEILIE ANNE HEFFERNAN CASEY
American Flight 11
Neilie Heffernan Casey, 32
planning manager for TJX Co.
By Richard Chacón and Charles M. Sennott, Globe Staff, 9/21/2001
Her smile was as warm as a sunrise.
And for those who knew Neilie Anne Heffernan Casey, 32, that smile seems impossible to associate with the events that took her life on Sept. 11 in the crash of American Airlines Flight 11.

That smile, the one that beamed even brighter when she was holding her baby daughter, Riley Eileen, or that lit up with a perfect drive off the tee on a Cape Cod morning playing golf with her husband, Michael, is what her family and friends say will stay with them.

That smile, the one that found the good in people in everything she did, will warm them and sustain them. That smile, they said, radiated hope.

The morning of Sept. 11, she left her home in Wellesley and caught Flight 11 for Los Angeles at 7:59 a.m. for business meetings as a planning manager of the TJX Cos.

That was before the whole world changed.

PAUL CASCIO
World Trade Center
HOW TO CHOOSE?

On a summer weekend, when the Cascios were expecting their elder son, Paul, to show up at the family's beach home with a guest, in he strode, with — 15 friends? "Mom, Mom," he said beguilingly, "how could we choose?" Mr. Cascio, 23, was the tour director for a flotilla of friends, who followed in his wake on adventures around the world. Happily spending every penny he earned, Mr. Carpe Diem, a proud denizen of downtown Manhattan, went scuba diving in Fiji and skiing wherever the air smelled of snow. He flew to Los Angeles and Dublin, just to see U2 concerts. A friend would mention a half-idea of a trip and Mr. Cascio, a newly minted vice president at Euro Brokers, would reply, "Done! We're doing it!" He was blunt. He played pranks that were hilarious but annoying. Impatient, he always arrived early. But he also beamed solicitous concern on friends and relatives. When his parents were separating, he called his mother, Janet, every morning for six months: "Let's plan your day. What will make you happy?" JOHN F. CASAZZA

OBJECTS OF HIS AFFECTION

John F. Casazza met his wife-to-be, Patty Fahy, at Shalimar, a disco on Route 35 in South Amboy, N.J., on Sept. 21, 1984. She was wearing beige pants, a sweater with a blazer and heels; he had on black pants, a shirt and tie, and a Members Only jacket. They danced to the pop tune "Wishing on a Star." "I can recall it all," Patty Casazza said. Mr. Casazza would bring his wife flowers on Friday nights, and would run into the stands to give her a welcome kiss when she arrived late to watch him coach their son's Little League baseball team at Laird Field in Colts Neck, N.J., where they lived. "I loved it," she said, laughing. "He had no problem showing his affection." Mr. Casazza, 38, would always prefer to go home to his family than to take clients out on the town, said Jim Lee, who knew him since the two attended kindergarten on Staten Island. It was Mr. Lee who drove Mr. Casazza to his first date with Patty.

Mr. Casazza worked his way to his position as a government bond trader at Cantor Fitzgerald, the kind of job normally available only to people with a college degree, Mr. Lee said. "John was the kind of person who never had anything handed to him," he said. "But John always had the determination and the drive." Profile published in THE NEW YORK TIMES on March 17, 2002.

I am keeping with the water theme, but taking it back, 5,000 miles west of my previous post, to a frigidly cold, dark New York kinda night. The Freedom Tower is not in sight in this shot, and this photo was, in fact, taken from the Jersey side, but the tower is looming above the buildings and lights shown here.

VIVIAN CASALDUC
World Trade Center
THE HARD WAY TO LEARNING

Vivian Casalduc lived to make her family's eyes light up. Each December, she would bake gingerbread for a giant candy land, where the ground was coated with thick piles of shredded coconut (snow) and the houses were studded with lollipops and licorice. "She would make it the first two days in December and let everybody look at it all month long, and on Christmas morning, she'd let everyone ransack it," said her daughter Angilic Casalduc.

Five small grandchildren spent alternate weekends in her care, and would come home with cotton candy in a kaleidoscope of colors and shapes. Turns out, Grandma had bought a cotton candy machine.

A Brooklyn native who grew up in housing projects, Ms. Casalduc, 45, married at 16, had three children and divorced. Her job as a microfiche clerk at Empire Blue Cross and Blue Shield moved two years ago from Brooklyn to the 28th floor of 1 World Trade Center. Her commute was longer, but the salsa concerts downstairs became a part of her lunchtime routine.
Ms. Casalduc left one prescient lesson, her daughter said: "Do everything the hard way." Why major in one subject when four would do, or take a taxi when public transportation was there? "Do it the easy way," Angilic Casalduc remembered, "and you'll never learn anything, and God forbid, anything happens, she worried we wouldn't know how to survive." JAMES MARCEL CARTIER
World Trade Center
THE MORE WORK, THE BETTER

Forget about taking it easy. James Marcel Cartier loved to work. Five long days was never enough to satisfy him. He insisted on six long days. "He loved to come home dirty," said his brother Michael. "It meant he had worked hard. He had no problem with that." Mr. Cartier, 26, was a deep-dimpled, happy-go-lucky electrician who had been assigned to a job at the World Trade Center just two weeks before the attack. He lived in Astoria, Queens, with Michael, and was well known in his neighborhood because he had worked at so many different places. If he couldn't get enough overtime doing electrical jobs to fill up six days, then he got behind the counter at the A & F Deli.

Before becoming an electrician, starting when he was just 13, he had a succession of jobs at a mall in Jackson Heights. It would take too long to list all the stores, but he worked at a stationery store, a pizza place and a drugstore. He just worked.

So many people in Queens had encountered him on their shopping trips that they wrote in shoe polish on their windows, "We will miss you, James." Profile published in THE NEW YORK TIMES on October 18, 2001.
