On 9/11, we must #NeverForget the Americans who died that day & our service members who continue to sacrifice to keep us safe #911Remembrance

‪Today we should all reflect on that day, what it meant to us. This day changed the direction of my life as it did for so many. Please spare a thought for the innocent that had no choice 🙏#911remembrance #911Memorial 🙏‬

On Sunday, I was proud to present the Peter J. Gomes Service Award to Jason McCuish. Jason exemplifies the teachings of the late Rev. Professor Peter J. Gomes - a commitment to service over self. Jason, a teacher at Lynn Tech, is not only being selfless in his acts of service, he is encouraging and inspiring a new generation to be compassionate and service-driven as well.

After the award ceremony, I joined the finalists and other volunteers for a day of community service. As we gather to remember the tragedy of September 11th and reflect on the sacrifices made for our country, we must also ask ourselves what we can do in our own lives to give back.

I was in my townhouse watching the Today Show when the news broke. I stood there, not believing my eyes. Then the second plane pierced the tower. I knew, and so did the rest of the world. On this 16th anniversary, we salute the heroes of that day and remember and honor the lives lost. #neverforget #911remembrance

It's hard to believe that's it's been 16 years since that horrifying day. It is definitely something you do NOT forget. #911Day #911Remembrance #NeverForget #Prayers

THOMAS DANIEL BURKE
World Trade Center
BONDS: FINANCIAL AND FAMILY

Tom Burke was the quintessential Wall Street man.

He broke into the bond business this way: It was 1985 and he was fresh out of Holy Cross. Nobody wanted him. Undeterred, he put on his suit every day and attended training courses at Liberty Brokerage ‹ uninvited. Impressed, the company hired him after three months.

Eventually, Mr. Burke, 38, became a partner at Cantor Fitzgerald, heading the government bond desk. He lived with his wife and children in Bedford Hills, N.Y.

He had a big personality. He knew how to hold his drink and when to hold his cards. He was the kind of person you wanted to be seated next to at a dinner party.

That was the Wall Street man. There was also the private man. "He was successful, but that's not what made him happiest," said his sister, Nancy Salter. "It was his family." That was the part the young guns did not see, the part not learned in college. Tom Burke's mother always had a happy birthday. Tom Burke's family never wondered where Daddy was. Tom Burke's friends never lay sick, alone.

MATTHEW J. BURKE
World Trade Center
Matthew Burke, 28, was an assistant equities trader at Cantor Fitzgerald on the 104th floor of the World Trade Center. He was a graduate of Xavier High School in Manhattan and Fordham University. Matt resided in Manhattan and spent much of his time with family and friends in Breezy Point, New York.

Matt is survived by his parents, John ("Jay") and Alice; his older brothers, John and Paul; his older sister, Alicia; his younger sister, Anne Marie; his younger brothers, Kevin and Terrence; his girlfriend, Kara Maurer; and countless friends.
At Xavier, he played rugby and was the starting quarterback of the school's football team in 1991. According to friends, Matt threw the most touchdown passes in the city that year, a feat matched by the number of interceptions he threw.
At Fordham University, Matt supplemented his studies by tending bar. After graduation, he continued to tend bar in New York City at Sutton Place, Rathbone's, and other establishments. "When Matt was behind the bar, he had a way of picking up the energy level of the whole place," said John Henley. "He was always in a good mood and had a way of making sure that you were too." Matt had been with Cantor Fitzgerald since 1996, working in offices in New York, Connecticut and California.
A memorial service will be held at noon on Saturday, September 29, at St. Thomas More Church, 20425 Rockaway Point Boulevard, Breezy Point, New York 11697.

Jayesh Shah and his brother were always close, whether the family lived in India or Wisconsin or Tulsa or Houston.

They went to the same college. They took computer science classes together in graduate school. "I was a terrible note-taker, and Jayesh was a great note- taker," said Niloy Shah, his brother, younger by a year. And when Jay Shah got married, the newlyweds lived with the younger brother and his wife for months.

Even after Jayesh Shah moved to New York in 2000, to work at eSpeed International, a division of Cantor Fitzgerald, the brothers talked almost every day.

Mr. Shah, a strong believer in education, wanted to be sure the move would not disrupt his children's schooling, so Mrs. Shah and the children remained in Houston until school was out. Each child has a favorite memory of time with their father. Back in 2001 Nikita, 10, loved horseback riding in Yosemite. Sonia, 8, loved the "Sling Shot" ride at Seaside Heights. Kevin, 6, loved wrestling with his dad. Once again a great soul lost his life in a terrorist attack. STEPHEN BUNIN
World Trade Center
BUGS BUNNY TO BOB MARLEY "Stevie, you know you're a strange person," Hyacinth Bunin would say with great delight to her husband, Stephen Bunin. And he graciously accepted the compliment.
Mr. Bunin, 44, was a systems administrator, a computer guy, at Cantor Fitzgerald, but oh, that does not tell the story. He was quiet enough, but made buoyant by his goofy sense of humor. He was an inveterate Trekkie, a fan of the Three Stooges and Bugs Bunny cartoons, and he spent every summer Sunday wading into a Long Island pond to launch his prized motorized sailboats. He was a nut about foreign cars, and he was enamored of all things from the homeland of his wife, Hyacinth: "I'm a Jewmaican!" he would say.
He eventually became a Seventh-day Adventist, one of a handful of white members of the couple's Queens church, and was an easygoing, approachable man whom teenagers sought out for advice. But Mr. Bunin also checked in with his mother, Corinne, and sister, Kitty, almost daily, celebrating holidays with them. An enduring image: Mr. Bunin playing guitar and singing, awfully but with earnest intention, Bob Marley's "No Woman No Cry." Profile published in THE NEW YORK TIMES on September 9, 2002.

Can we talk about my son on the podium with a 2nd place finish for his age group!!?? Mason’s first 5k at the 9/11 Remembrance Run! I ran with him and another 6 year old and a 7 year old. (Yes, I was a running babysitter just to make sure they got back...Everyone came up to me after cause I was the lady running with 3 young boys yelling, “Stop sprinting, boys! Save your energy! I can’t carry all 3 of you back!” lol) I LOVED running with them, cheering them on and motivating them to finish! But to see Mason’s name as 2nd place was pretty rad! I just love seeing him excited to accomplish something! I can’t believe they ran 3 Miles! When I was 6, Saturday morning I would’ve been in front of the tv watching Scooby Doo with a bowl of Fruity Pebbles. Jack, Cole and Mason are beasts! These boys are up and running 3 Miles!! #5k #911remembrance #neverforgotten #coralsprings5k #hewcoralsprings #masonbear #proudmomma

Bright and early for the rescheduled 9/11 Remembrance 5k! Mason is the 51st member of our Hard Exercise Works Coral Springs team!

NANCY BUECHE

HER DAUGHTER'S INSPIRATION

Nancy Bueche had a 10-year-old daughter, Bridget, and a full-time job at Aon Corporation in the World Trade Center, and was within months of receiving a bachelor's degree in business administration. Bridget was a primary reason for Mrs. Bueche to push herself to attend night classes for three years, said Jim Bueche, her husband. "She wanted to show our daughter you can do it," he said. "Anything she did, she did for our daughter." On weekends, he said, Mrs. Bueche, 43, and Bridget were inseparable. "Starting Friday night all the way through Sunday," he said. In the summer, they would pick up Mrs. Bueche's mother, go to the beach and return to their home in Hicksville, on Long Island, for Mr. Bueche's barbecue.

In the winter, he said, they would shop. "As soon as it started to get cold," he said. "Clothes for Bridget. Christmas presents for her mother. They'd hit the mall or some big sale somewhere. When they got tired of that, they'd go to children's movies. Or the library." Now, he said: "I try to keep her busy with friends and her softball team. But it isn't the same." A few weeks ago, Mr. Bueche and Bridget went to Briarcliffe College, which was giving Mrs. Bueche a posthumous honorary degree. Despite her grief, Bridget has kept up grades, he said. "I tell her: `Mother got all A's. You can do it, too.' "
