If you haven't guessed by my posts, I love nature and animals. I'm well aware this makes for an atypical feed given that this is a music page. It's not overwhelmingly studio/live shots or tributes to other musicians...perhaps one day that will change. However, if I'm entirely honest, I'm less and less inspired by both the general culture surrounding music and the humans in it, and more inspired by what's outside my door. Do not mistake this for cynicism. I like music artists and the culture can be great, but I'd be lying if I told you either of these is where I consistently draw inspiration from. For this reason I've always felt like a bit of a stranger in the music "industry" or "world" or whatever you want to call it. I've never felt in my core a complete sense of belonging there. I don't resent that. I don't wish otherwise. It's neither good nor bad. It just is. I can't pull out a cool vinyl collection and point to some rock idols that inspired me to write a whole album like so many musicians do; it's just never worked that way for me. If I tried, it would be inauthentic. While this makes for an unusual journey as I navigate the music landscape, it doesn't discourage me. Back to the nature thing. The reason I post this stuff a lot is because that is what inspires me. I spend a lot of time thinking about what music that isn't influenced by and doesn't draw from music itself ought to sound like. I hope to create music in such a fashion that it uniquely does for you what my inspiration does for me, which is refresh me and give me profound happiness. I'm not sure there's much of a point to these words, but I felt compelled to start writing. Perhaps it will encourage you, or just give you insight into why I am the way that I am.
I don't believe there is any one way to do most things in life. I say "who's making the rules?" a lot these days. Where's the room for innovation if you're following steps laid out by others because "it's just what you do"? My point is, don't stop doing what you feel called to do just because you have a new or unconventional approach. Press on that much more. Your fresh take just might one day change the world we live in for the better.
