Surrounded Islands by Christo and Jeanne-Claude, Miami, Florida, USA, 1983
Christo and Jean Claude are called the most famous pair of artists working in the field of land art.
In the 1960s, Hristo developed the concept of "ampackage" (empaquetage - packaging, more commonly used the term "ambullage") - his own form of artistic expression, which brought him world fame. "Ampacketage" or "ambullage" consists in wrapping objects and objects in various materials (cloth, paper, film). The result is the status of the work of art. Hristo began with the packing of small items, for example, cans (which is true before it already did Man Ray). Over time, the artist moved to the packaging of trees and cars, and then whole buildings and landscapes. The artist takes a lot of time and effort to obtain permits for the implementation of their projects. Hristos managed to "wrap" Kunsthalle in Bern (1968), the Museum of Modern Art in Chicago (1969), the seashore section near Sydney (1969), the New Bridge in Paris (1985) and the Berlin Reichstag (1995). Among the landscape projects of Hristo is the "Running hedge" in California (24 miles of cloth wall), created in 1976.
On May 7, 1983, the installation of Surrounded Islands was completed in Biscayne Bay, between the city of Miami, North Miami, the Village of Miami Shores and Miami Beach. Eleven of the islands situated in the area of Bakers Haulover Cut, Broad Causeway, 79th Street Causeway, Julia Tuttle Causeway, and Venetian Causeway were surrounded with 6.5 million square feet (603,870 square meters) of floating pink woven polypropylene fabric covering the surface of the water and extending out 200 feet (61 meters) from each island into the bay. The fabric was sewn into 79 patterns to follow the contours of the 11 islands.
For two weeks, Surrounded Islands, spreading over 7 miles (11.3 kilometers), was seen, approached and enjoyed by the public, from the causeways, the land, the water and the air. #style #art #design #miami #usa #pink #christo #7design #street #streetphotography #love #trees #instadesign #artist #designer
