#SoulProductions February celebration of Blk Women Producers in the U.S. Day 2: Ms. Shay Wafer, born in Los Angeles CA headed to the east coast and attended Howard University studying Human Resources. After school, Wafer went back home to LA and began working with Marla Gibbs on being a program manager for an arts school she was creating in South Central LA. After six years, Wafer decided to put her time to good use by attending the Yale School of Drama receiving her #MFA in Theater Management. Wafer has had an amazing career!!!! She is currently the Executive Director of #651arts in Brooklyn, an organization that is dedicated to producing work of the #africandiaspora. Before 651Arts, she held senior level positions at a number of non-profit arts organizations with a focus on African-American programming, community engagement and arts education. In 2007 Ms. Wafer became the founding Vice President of Programs for the August Wilson Center for African American Culture, a new multi-disciplinary performing arts center and museum in downtown Pittsburgh. Prior to the August Wilson Center, Wafer served for six years as the managing director of Cornerstone Theater Company in Los Angeles, California- her hometown. She also served as the Managing Director of the St. Louis Black Repertory Company and was a founding partner of Crossroads Arts Academy and Theatre in L.A. and was a co-founder of Colored Girl Productions. Ms. Wafer has engaged in additional community and volunteer activities throughout her career including serving on the Board of Directors of Theatre Communications Group (TCG). #fbf circa 1978 ~ My dear friend @shaywafer here with micro-cornrows that are braided swooped to one side and beaded with real amber beads. We met while attending Howard University introduced by @edwardcjones3. Shay taught me to put in my first extensions, something unheard of. Most people did not know of extensions and those who knew how to install them, were not sharing. We became instant friends. A pragmatic Virgo, who is laid back cool and matter of factly dispenses sage advice. Known as Mama Shay, she is yet another nurturer who has enriched my life. A grad of Yale's School of Drama, Shay is the Executive Director for Brooklyn's 651 Arts. Her daughter @xoshroq is a talented and successful actor, who was first seen in the movie Precious and on The Mindy Project. This style was created by Shay's good friend @angelaegibbs daughter of famed actress #MarlaGibbs #braids #history #extensions #cornrows #beads #amber #friends #virgo #nurturer #yale #651arts #howarduniversity #howardalumni #DenedaWafer #californiagirls #sisterhood #sisterfriends #teacher #educator #auset #yemanja

More #kismet! With new friend @naomi_under_a_tree and friend of a lifetime @shaywafer. Shay, Executive Director of #651arts booked @lisafischerlive immediately following the film release of ,"20 Feet From Stardom." We just found out Naomi flew in to see that show at #BAM that night. And of course I was there too. #smallworld #20feetfeomstardom #lisafischerlive #rollingstones #music #magic #bluenote #651arts
