This week’s cookery book for my #52cookerybooks challenge is ‘The Hive Beach Cafe Cookbook’ (2012) @hivebeachcafehq.
This is the 41st book in my challenge.
#52cookerybooks_week41. To tie in with my weekend away from Bristol I have chosen a book from my collection that celebrates my favourite beach cafe in Burton Bradstock. The fact that I chose to celebrate my 50th birthday here indicates my love of this cafe and the area. The book features more than 100 fish and seafood recipes divided into four seasons, reflects The Hive’s chefs’ passion for sustainability and protecting dwindling fish stocks. •

Pea risotto from ‘How to Eat’ @nigellalawson. The 3rd dish I’ve made this week for my #52cookerybooks challenge
#52cookerybooks_week40. Nigella specifies frozen petits pois in this recipe, she goes on to say ‘I have used real peas, just podded to make a risi e bisi, but the fabulously named Venetian slurpy risotto, but to be frank if you don’t grow peas yourself there is not a huge advantage of using fresh ones.’ The risotto has a delicate pea flavour an pale green colour which was achieved by adding a pea purée at the end, made from cooking some peas in butter and stock with grated parmesan, nutmeg and ground pepper. •

Tomato salad from ‘How to Eat’ @nigellalawson . My 1st dish made for my #52cookerybooks challenge
#52cookerybooks_week40. Nigella explains - ‘there is no recipe to follow here: no one needs to be told how to slice tomatoes. But there is one injunction, leave them plain. Get the best tomatoes and make sure they are not cold’
I then followed Nigella’s further guidance by sprinkling the tomatoes with salt and pepper, a drop or two of balsamic (my own apple balsamic made from #52cookerybooks_week35) and a drizzle of ‘glass-green’ olive oil.
Tomatoes were @iowtomatoes. Totally perfect for this dish. •

Moules Mariniere from ‘How to Eat’ @nigellalawson. The 2nd dish I’ve made this week for my #52cookerybooks challenge
#52cookerybooks_week40. Nigella says that she likes a lot of winey mussel liquor in moules mariniere so there is more wine to start off with than you might find in other recipes...just the way I like it. No cream, simply mussels, butter, shallots, garlic, parsley and white wine. (I added the frites, crusty bread and mayo to go with it!) What a feast it turned out to be! •

It’s Monday! That means a change of cookery book for my #52cookerybooks challenge, where each week I focus on one of my cookery books. This week I have chosen ‘How to Eat’ (1998) @nigellalawson
This is my 40th book in my challenge.
#52cookerybooks_week40. I used to cook a lot from this book back in the 90s by the number of pages that were marked in it! I am looking forward to rediscovering @nigellalawson recipes from it again. It is rooted in home cooking and has over 350 recipes! ‘At its heart How to Eat is about a feeling for food to be read as well as from which to cook.’ I also love the artist photography by @richardcaldicott

Watermelon and feta from ‘Plenty’ by @ottolenghi. My 4th dish made for my #52cookerybooks challenge
#52cookerybooks_week39 @ottolenghi says this dish needs to be eaten on the beach, or at least outdoors, on a hot day, with the san’s rays unobstructed. I have some left over to try this out it at the weekend. I my work canteen yesterday I was transported to another place! The combination of the juicy watermelon, salty feta, basil and freshly ground pepper was extraordinary. •

#52cookerybooks_39. I wonder if they will be serving these potatoes at Windsor Castle on Saturday? They are definitely a worthy candidate for a Royal Wedding breakfast! British Jersey Royals with soft quails eggs with pesto and peas @ottolenghi describes this as ‘a poshed-up version of the ordinary spud salad.’ Has anyone any tips for shelling boiled quails eggs please?! (I found it very tricky to do!)

I thought this book would be a perfect accompaniment to ‘National Vegetarian Week,’ as the book is a collection of vegetarian recipes. @ottolenghi food inspiration comes from his strong Mediterranean background, and ‘His approach to vegetable dishes is wholly original and innovative, based on strong flavours and stunning, fresh combinations.’ I can’t wait to get cooking! •

Gigot Roti - roast leg of lamb. This is a variation a Moroccan roast leg of lamb known as mechoui from ‘Mediterranean Cookery.’ (First published 1987) by Claudia Roden. Made as my fourth dish for my #52cookerybooks challenge

The lamb is rubbed with a mixture of spices and chopped mint, Claudia explains how the meat is cooked slowly until the meat is so tender you can ‘pull it off with your fingers.’ I don’t eat meat very often these days but when I do I buy good quality and cook simply like this. The meat was so succulent, the outer coating was crispy and spiced to perfection. •

#52cookerybooks_week38. A favourite Turkish salad made from mashed aubergine and yoghurt. I had this dish for the first time on holiday in Istanbul. Eating this took me straight back there, imagining being in the Spice Market and Sultanahmet! •

Salatet Ads - Lentil Salad from ‘Mediterranean Cookery.’ (First published 1987) by Claudia Roden. Made as my second dish for my #52cookerybooks challenge
#52cookerybooks_week38. This is a simple Egyptian dish made with green or brown lentils. Olive oil, juice of a lemon, a teaspoon of cumin and chopped mint are added immediately to the lentils after cooking, so that they absorb the dressing. The dish is served cold. I try to eat pulses as often as I can now after having met @jennychandleruk and focussing on her book ‘Pulse’ and learning about how delicious, cheap, easy to use and nutritious pulses are. •

#52cookerybooks_week38. This ratatouille is made the way it is in Nice where the vegetables are cooked separately. The proportion of vegetables vary, this recipe are the preference of Henri Fontin.
I found the ratatouille to be much more flavoursome and the vegetable retain more colour and texture. I had forgotten all about ratatouille until I saw this recipe. It was good to revisit an old friend! •

Cooking with Columbo is written by @silverscreensuppers and is essential for every Columbo fan. It lists every single episode of every series with a brief summary and a recipe linked to each one. There is a foreword by @columbophile who gives us his ultimate Columbo dinner party list including guests, entertainment and the chef.

I’ve gone for Peter Falk’s Avocado. It’s not the most complex recipe I could have chosen from the book, admittedly. I was thinking I’d leave the trickier stuff to @bethfrombristol. So, next one for #52cookerybooks, Beth?

Huevos Rotos a chrizo, potato, onion and egg ‘hotch potch.’ Such a lovely weekend brunch dish. The recipe states to eat it immediately, I had no trouble with that! I first made this dish from @moritotapas by #samandsamclark

Polenta alla Griglia - Grilled polenta with Parma ham @chandosdeli_clifton, my 4th dish from ‘The River Cafe Cook Book’ by Rose Gray and Ruth Rogers @therivercafelondon.
In the book Rose and Ruth explain that ‘just as bread is important to Tuscany, pasta to Emilia Romano and rice in the Veneto, polenta is the staple of the northernmost region of Italy.’ The polenta for this recipe bubbled in a saucepan for 45 minutes until thick, I then spread the mixture out to form a cake shape and left to get completely cold, then I cut it into slices ready to grill.
