Although I LOVE the amazing variety of #bitters available these days, the Queens Park Swizzle is a brilliant reminder of just how ace good old-fashioned #Angostura bitters can be. This is a boozy yet refreshing #cocktail that's best drunk while reading all about in the book I pinched the #recipe from: 'Around the World in 80 Cocktails' by Chad Parkhill.
Muddle 8 mint leaves in a Collins glass. Add 60ml dark rum, 20ml lime juice and 5ml sugar syrup and stir. Top with crushed ice, stir, top with more ice and crown with 6-8 dashes Angostura bitters. Garnish with mint and sip through a #reusable straw. #fuckingdelicious #52cocktails #rum #mint

Week 7: Bees Knees #52cocktails

2 oz Bombay Sapphire gin
0.75 oz lemon juice
0.5 oz homemade honey syrup

Shake with ice. Garnish with lemon peel and thyme.

Time for a really good #Manhattan - made as per the #recipe in one of my very favourite #cocktail #books, 'Ten cocktails' by the truly awesome @alicelascelles ... seriously, you could be a teetotaller and still enjoy this book for the writing alone, as Alice muses on spirits, distillers, food and of course cocktails ... Go buy a copy, you won't regret it! Anyway, here's how to make the moreish Manhattan: Half-fill a mixing glass with ice. Add 50ml rye whisky, 25ml red vermouth (although I used @casamariolau because I LOVE it),5ml Luxardo Maraschino cherry syrup and 2 big dashes #Angostura #bitters. Stir, strain into a chilled rocks glass and enjoy! #52cocktails #fuckingdelicious

Here we are! Did you go shopping in an Italian grocery? :) Let's start. Take the mixing glass and make it ice cold, discard the water inside and put these ingredients inside:

1/2 oz Espresso Coffee (Diluted with some water to make it less strong)

1 1/2 oz Martini Riserva Speciale Rubino Sweet Vermouth

3/4 oz Grappa (a soft and smooth one will work better, like a Muscat one) .
Stir well and strain into a nice vintage coupe, no garnish needed this time, simply bring the cocktail to your mouth and drink!
Obviously because not everyone have the same grappa and coffee at home be sure to adjust the ratio, so that the drink will not be unbalanced. Let me know in the comments how it went and see you tomorrow for the next week preview! .

Time for the "fully Italian" cocktail! 3 very ITALIANO products... Coffee, Grappa (for those who aren't familiar is a grape based spirit) & Vermouth. So that's explained the name. Because in Italy when you ask for "Caffè Corretto" it means an espresso with a shot of spirit inside, mainly grappa, but also Italian Brandy, but wait for it..... red wine too! So that's why I wanted to use vermouth. Super easy to find products, no excuse! Here what I used and later the dosages!

Happy Monday! Yes, it is a little ironic that the anti-rum drinker ends up drinking rum cocktails TWO weeks in a row! The point of this experiment is to try something new every week, so while I already had a mojito last week, this one is quite different. (I wanted to try a different cocktail, but they ran out of one of the key ingredients for that drank). I went to EAT Marketplace, a deli cafe that focuses on seasonal, local and sustainable ingredients. The cocktail offerings are limited, but the one I had was on point.

This Mojito is refreshing, with a nice effervescence from the champagne. The lime adds good sour flavor, while just enough mint adds freshness without being too overpowering. Unfortunately, I could barely taste the ginger, so I would've liked more. You'll also notice some strawberries in the mix, which add sweetness and chunky texture. As for the rum...the flavor was subtle, but I definitely felt it (and I'm not a lightweight)! 😋

Week 6: Ward Eight #52cocktails

Today I scored a signed copy of the fantastic #book 'A taste for absinthe' by R. Winston Guthrie and James F. Thompson. Naturally I had to make a #cocktail right away! This is the Arsenic and Old Lace - it's light, floral and herbaceous but with a full-on kick to it. If you like Aviations you will probably like this too. #recipe: rinse a chilled cocktail glass or coupe with #absinthe and set aside. Half-fill a mixing glass with ice. Add 2oz #gin, 3/4oz dry #vermouth and 1/4 oz creme de violette and stir. Strain into cocktail glass. Squeeze a piece of orange peel over the top, drop into glass and serve. #fuckingdelicious #52cocktails

A warm caramel aroma hits the nose before you take a sip. Nice balance of sweet, smokey, nutty and dry flavors.

Build in glass cocktail, easy peasy. If you don't have Meyer's Bitter you can use something similar with a bit of anice but lots of herbal flavour, but try to find Meyer's you won't regret it! For the Plum wine, I'm using the one from an asian store in Milan, I'm sure pretty much any kind can work, but be sure it is not overly sweet!
So let's grab the best old fashioned glass you have (or cut a Campari bottle if you wanna be fancy) and put some ice inside to make it super cold. When ready discard the water and pour some magic inside. .
1/2 oz Campari

1 oz Meyer’s Bitter (check this one out, soooo good)

1 1/2 oz Plum Wine

Now stir a little bit to mix the ingredients together and finish the cocktail by grating some nutmeg on top. Now it's time to drink it. See you tomorrow for the preview of the next week cocktail.

Thursday means new weekly cocktail! Today's one came like a lighting bolt. One day I woke up, did my breakfast, look at my personal bar, picked up the bottles I'm using and "voilà". Probably it was inside my head for long, waiting to be made :)
So if you see the cocktail, it actually is similar to a Negroni, but with more complexity to me. Check the ingredients:

New #cocktail time! Well, new to me, anyway, since the Pendennis is actually a classic. It's got a tart yet floral flavour and is kinda like a Fitzgerald but less cloying. In other words, it's fucking delicious. #recipe - shake 60ml #gin, 30ml apricot brandy, 15ml lime juice, 5ml sugar syrup and 2 dashes #peychaudsbitters in a cocktail shaker that's half full of ice. Strain into a chilled cocktail glass and imbibe! #52cocktails

I know most of y'all are watching Super Bowl, but we have a schedule to stick to! 😃 This week, I went to wine country and had some drinks at Ponte Vineyard. The Cellar Lounge offers 🍷 by the glass and a full bar, with live music on the weekends.

I promised I would try some rum-based drinks this year, so when I saw they offered an interesting twist on the traditional mojito, I thought I'd give it a try.

This was definitely a sweet cocktail, but not cloyingly so. The blood orange and 🍓 were strong, while the rum was subtle. The muddled raspberries added nice texture and tartness to contrast the sweet flavors. The soda, lime and mint gave it a refreshing taste. I would've liked a little more tartness to counteract the sweet, so maybe cutting back on the simple syrup would've achieved that. However, this was a nice drank, so now I'll have to try a classic mojito to compare!
