Kai’s tip for the weekend: flying the ama. Requested from @elusive_handz and a couple others, they needed some tips on flying the ama. The secret is... it’s all in the hips...don’t think of leaning your body on your paddle to pop the ama because you’re going to slow yourself down which will make it harder. You wanna just roll your hips. (Exclaimer: if your ama is really heavy or rigged really far out, then you might need to lean your body a little, but for the most part it’s in the hips). So just try popping your ama just using your hips. Another thing is that, just like a bike, it’s easier to balance with just a little forward movement. So in the beginning, just try taking a few strokes first to get the boat moving, then pop the ama and get used to the feel. It’s also fun to practice it on small waves. When you’ve got that down, you can try taking one stroke with the ama up, and then down and then one stroke and brace and one stroke and brace, and so on and so on until you can paddle with it up. The next step is change over and paddle on the ama side(I forgot to do that) which is a lot harder than you’d think, because you’re trying to keep that hip up it’s hard to paddle against it. Last step, once you’ve gotten comfortable paddling with it up, try going fast with it. In all honesty, competition rarely calls for ama flying. However, it does help in choppy conditions to be comfortable with your ama coming up once in a while, and it does also help to maintain speed on hard turns while on swells, because the ama doesn’t dig into the swell when going left or right. The more you practice it, the better you’ll be. So, try not to lean on your paddle so much, just kind of roll your hips. Start slowly and work your way up till you can comfortable paddle with it up and then...take it off...See you guys on the water for the next @kanaka_ikaika race...

Once more unto the breach, dear friends...Kai's tip for the weekend: practice races. There is no better training then doing practice races, scrimmages, time trials, or actual races. Every time you push your body to the limit, you find out just how far you can go, just how fast you can sprint, and how hard you can push your body. It's great to do them every once and a while just to see where you are at physically and mentally. The more often you do them, the more comfortable you get in them, and the more confident you become in your abilities. Of course it isn't recommended that you race every week, because pushing your body to the limit often is exhausting. But sometimes that is the way things go and the races are every weekend, especially nearing the end of the season where all the championship races line up every weekend and some times twice in one weekend. Fitness plays a big role in that you will be able to recover faster between races. Follow @deniseoceanplayground for updates on the "All Commers Race" that she holds (almost) every Friday, and @kanaka_ikaika for the regular season races. You also get to see where you are at compared to others in different conditions in different courses for free. It can also let you know if your training program is working for you or if you need to train differently to fix something. So whenever there is a chance to have a practice race or scrimmage or time trial with a group of people, do it. See you guys on the water...
