Kai's tip for the weekend: Race plan Part 1, course planning. When you're preparing for a race, it is always good to do the race course at least once before the race. Think of it as taking a practice test, the more you take a practice test, the better you are prepared for the exam. The more you practice the course, the better you'll know it when it comes to race day. Get to know landmarks, like where to aim, if the run is better on the outside or inside, shallow spots or reef, and surf breaks. There are many races where course is very straight forward, and many that aren't. For example the makapuu run is a very technical course, with wave breaks, shallow spots, open ocean, and chop from the Hanauma bay opening to Portlock point, as compared to a Hawaii Kai run where it's pretty much a straight down run (most of the time) to the light house. Even the @puakeadesigns team does a practice Molokai run before the channel. The only way to get better at it, is to practice it, that goes for technique as well as course. Say you can't practice the course, do as best as you can to simulate it, and even if you can't, try to simulate the time as best as you can. Kai's tip for the weekend: Balance part 2 ... Oc1, Surfski, and SUP are very similar to bikes in that with more speed, the easier it is to balance. The more speed you have the easier it will be to control and balance your boat/board. However, with all that speed going one way, if a force were to hit you perpendicularly, say a bump/swell, it will "throw" you a little more than if you were going at a slower speed. So the key is to have as much speed as you can and stay as smooth as possible. When you're going downwind, that means trying not to fight the swells too much if you have a lot of speed, and kind of zigzag your way through swells. You have to anticipate the swells and if you know one is coming from the right or left, you have to slightly shift your weight to counteract it and stay stable. See you guys on the water
