This week I completed the 3-day AIARE 1 course in avalanche risk management and rescue. Although I always travel with more experienced companions in avalanche terrain my goal was to understand their decisions and observations to make my own risk assessment. And ultimately to continue traveling safely to explore my favorite places in the winter time! The course was in Mammoth Lakes, part classroom and part outdoors where we got to geek out in snow pits, get comfortable with touring/avalanche gear, and successfully rescue many helpless buried backpacks! I would highly recommend AIARE 1 for anyone interested in winter backcountry travel. ❄️ #california#mammothlakes#395north#aiare#winter#backcountry#backcountryskiing#skitouring#backpacking#rei1440project#optoutside#trailove
Best vacation ever. Ate tons of snow, and even made some turn yellow... 😏
Inhaling that crisp air was like taking the first sip of cold water in the morning. Feeling it slide down your throat and all the way down to your core like it was your first sip of water in days. But imagine having that feeling with every, single, breath. #convictlake#mammothlakes#mammothmountain
Absolute pure bliss. Never did I think I would have the opportunity to photograph a moment like this. I stood there in awe as I watched wild horses peacefully graze the land as the sun shared its last moments above the mountains. (Magical Unicorn moment)
He felt left out when we didn’t let him play with the magical horses (see previous post for real life unicorn moment) so he attempted to recreate the scene just a few miles ahead.
