Brutalist architecture flourished from the 1950s to the mid-1970s, descending from the modernist architectural movement of the early 20th century. The term originates from the French word for 'raw', as Le Corbusier described his choice of material 'béton brut', or raw concrete.

British architectural critic Reyner Banham adapted the term into 'brutalism' to identify the emerging style. Brutalism became popular with governmental and institutional clients, with numerous examples across London. Examples are typically massive in character, even when not physically large, fortress-like, with a predominance of exposed concrete construction, or in the case of the 'brick brutalists', ruggedly combine detailed brickwork and concrete.
There is often an emphasis on graphically expressing in the external elevations and in the whole-site architectural plan the main functions and people-flows of the buildings. Brutalism became popular for educational buildings, especially university buildings, but was relatively rare for corporate projects. Brutalism became favoured for many government projects, tower blocks and shopping centres...

The first station to be known as Bank opened on 25 February 1900 when the City & South London Railway, now part of the Northern line, opened its extension from Borough to Moorgate. The earlier terminus of the line, King William Street, on a different tunnel alignment was closed at the same time. As with the City & South London Railway the high cost of property in the City, coupled with the presence of the Royal Exchange, the Bank of England, and Mansion House, meant that the station had to be built entirely underground.

To avoid wayleave payments to property owners and to lessen possible claims for damage during construction and operation, the tunnels were directly under public streets. This caused the platforms under Threadneedle Street and Poultry to be so curved that one end of the platform cannot be seen from the other. East of Bank station the Central line tunnels have sharp curves to avoid the vaults of the Bank of England itself...

The Metropolitan Police Mounted Branch is a Central Operations branch of London's Metropolitan Police. The main responsibilities of the branch are to conduct safe policing of football matches, and crowd control at other large public order events. They also escort the Royal Guard change every morning.

Crowd control is the primary object of the deployment of the police horses, both for orderly and disorderly gatherings of assembled crowds. The Metropolitan Police has 150 officers and 120 horses at eight stables across London. Horses typically patrol for nine or 10 miles each day, but that can rise to 16 if escorting the King's Troop of soldiers from their barracks in St John's Wood to the centre of town...

The roof of Kings Cross Station, engineered by Arup, rises up a great steel stalk in the centre and then spreads into a tree-like canopy of intersecting branches, before descending into a ring of supports at the circumference. In so doing, it avoids the need to drop columns into the ticket hall of the underground station underneath the main space.

I love this piece of structural engineering as I think it perfectly illustrates how a complex project can be consummated in a simple and elegant design, and it always presents a challenge to me when I pass through this area to try and capture this form in a new and unique way...

London is very often a city of contrasts, where you can find well-to-do affluent areas next to less well off housing estates and cobbled mediaeval streets jostling with the modernity of glass & steel. In this view, looking up from Eastcheap in the 'Square Mile' City of London, which unknown to many is actually a city state, you see 20 Fenchurch Street, known by various colloquial names such as 'The Walkie Talkie', 'Walkie Scorchie' and 'The Fryscraper', the latter two referencing the propensity of the building, due to its concave design, to concentrate the heat of the sun into the streets below...

Originally founded in the 12th century, it was first known as "St. Mary de Hull" or "St. Mary de la Hulle". Lovat Lane is a narrow lane that heads down to Lower Thames Street. Plague and fire did for medieval London, but the city that rose in its place was built on the old street patterns. Southwark London Underground station was opened on 20 November 1999 as part of the Jubilee Line Extension. The original plan for the Extension did not include a station between those at Waterloo and London Bridge; Southwark station was added after lobbying by the local council.

Southwark station was designed by Sir Richard MacCormac and presented significant technical and architectural difficulties which were resolved by constructing two concourses at different levels. The upper concourse is the centrepiece of the station. It is a space 16 metres high with a glass roof that allows daylight to enter deep into the station. It is faced with a spectacular glass wall, 40 metres long, consisting of 660 specially cut pieces of blue glass, which was designed by the artist Alexander Beleschenko. The wall is one of the extension's more celebrated architectural features, winning critical approval and a number of awards.

MacCormac said the design of this and the lower level concourse was inspired by the work of the 19th century Prussian architect Karl Friedrich Schinkel...

ALLEYWAYS OF LONDON - Turnpin Lane
Turnpin Lane is a small narrow street located in Greenwich Town Centre.
It is situated between Greenwich Church Street at one end and King William Walk at the other.
Greenwich Market cuts across the Middle of Turnpin Lane and is London’s only historic market set within a World Heritage site.
Surrounded by independent and boutique shops and a well established designer-maker trend means you are sure to find something different, Greenwich Market is one of London's best sources for arts and crafts, unique gifts, rare antiques and collectables, and a visit to this covered market, granted a Royal Charter in 1700, is just one highlight of any trip to Greenwich.

The Royal Charter was granted on 19 December 1700 to last for 1,000 years. It was reinforced by an Act of Parliament in 1849...

Sitting below a five storey mixed-use development known as Crossrail Place, the new Canary Wharf station will help connect this key business district to the City of London, the West End and Heathrow. At the same time, it acts as a bridge between two communities - Canary Wharf Estate and Poplar to the north. The 250 metre-long station box is surrounded by the water of West India Quay dock. Designing a station to be built 18 metres below water level presented significant design challenges but has resulted in optimum access to and through the Canary Wharf Estate while retaining a navigable channel for boats within the dock.

More than one hundred thousand square feet of retail and leisure space sits above the station. A 310 metre-long timber lattice roof, sheltering a striking roof-top garden, lets in light and rain for natural irrigation. Translucent air filled pillows allow direct views in and out of the building. Sustainably sourced beams provide a warm, natural counterpoint to the glass and steel towers of Canary Wharf. The nautical reference extends beyond the main structure of the building to the angled design of the buttress ends, anchoring the striking timber lattice roof...

The Oxo Tower is a building with a prominent tower on the south bank of the River Thames in London. The building was originally constructed as a power station to supply electricity to the Royal Mail post office, built towards the end of the 19th century. It was subsequently acquired by the Liebig Extract of Meat Company in the 1920s, manufacturers of Oxo beef stock cubes, for conversion into a cold store.

The building was largely rebuilt to an Art Deco design by company architect Albert Moore between 1928 and 1929. Much of the original power station was demolished, but the river facing facade was retained and extended. Liebig wanted to include a tower featuring illuminated signs advertising the name of their product. When permission for the advertisements was refused, the tower was built with four sets of three vertically-aligned windows, each of which "coincidentally" happened to be in the shapes of a circle, a cross and a circle. This was significant because Skyline advertising at the time was banned along Southbank. Despite these windows being the building’s architectural focal point, the tower is not accessible by the general public. Granted access is only given to those who maintain the tower, such as electricians.

Bermondsey may be understood to mean 'Beornmund's island'; but, while "Beornmund" represents an Old English personal name, identifying an individual once associated with the place, the element "-ey" represents Old English "eg", for "island", "piece of firm land in a fen", or simply a "place by a stream or river". Thus Bermondsey need not have been an island as such in the Anglo-Saxon period, and is as likely to have been a higher, drier spot in an otherwise marshy area. Bermondsey appears in the Domesday Book of 1086 as Bermundesy and Bermundesye. It was then held by King William, though a small part was in the hands of Robert, Count of Mortain, the king's half brother, and younger brother of Odo of Bayeux, then earl of Kent. Its Domesday assets were recorded as including 13 hides, 'a new and handsome church', 5 ploughs, 20 acres (8 hectares) of meadow, and woodland for 5 pigs. It rendered £15 in total... #Londonpop #Londonlife #London_only #Londontown #Londoner #LondonForYou #Londoncalling #Londoncity #ILoveLondon #Photos_Of_England #Londonbound #Londonlove #Londonist #igersLondon #ExploreMyCity #londres

BRIXTON UNDERGROUND STATION
The Victoria line is arguably the nadir of London Underground design. Opened in stages between 1969 and 1971, it did so against a background of under-investment, terrible industrial relations, declining passenger numbers, and an apparent complete neglect of London Underground/London Transport’s considerable design heritage. Somehow, despite London Transport’s general malaise, the construction of the Victoria line was authorised. It was a scheme that had been kicking around since the 1940s. When the first part of it opened in 1969, it transformed connections across central London and ushered in an early form of automatic train control giving faster journeys. There are 16 stations on the line, and 16 different mural designs. Brixton’s mural is a visual pun (a ton of bricks) by Hans Unger... #Londonpop #Londonlife #London_only #Londontown #Londoner #LondonForYou #Londoncalling #Londoncity #ILoveLondon #Photos_Of_England #Londonbound #Londonlove #Londonist #igersLondon #ExploreMyCity #londres

SYMMETRY ON THE LONDON UNDERGROUND
Like all stations on the Cockfosters extension, Turnpike Lane set new aesthetic standards not previously seen on the Underground. During the planning period for the extension to Cockfosters, alternate names for this station, North Harringay and Ducketts Green, were considered but rejected.

The station was designed by the architect Charles Holden and is a well-preserved example of the modernist house style of London Transport in the 1930s. It was listed at Grade II in 1994. Its high walls contain segmented windows that allow natural light to shine far into the station. The effect in late afternoon light is akin to that in a cathedral transept...

Sitting on the corner of Coldharbour Lane and Atlantic Road, this shop has already made quite an impression in the area by covering its shutters and outside walls with graffiti depicting famous rappers — including 2Pac and Big L — along with its tag-like logo.
