When I run alone, I often don't run with music. Tunes are certainly helpful for an extra boost. But I enjoy the quiet as a chance to wrestle with what is on my mind. I can solve problems and develop solutions while out for a three mile jog. Yes, my body is working pretty hard, but my mind is doing even greater work. Running can be a therapy to filter through what is clogging our minds. #2MileTuesday Do you run with music?

Remember my post from yesterday... about being a beginner. Well that is me when it comes to swimming. Yes I can swim. But I've never done it from a sport standpoint. So I've been reading a bunch of articles and asking some friends to learn how to get better. Swimming, like other physical activities, isn't just about movement. It is about the right movement at the right time. Your body is a beautiful machine. And when you figure out how to get all its pieces firing at the same time... magic happens. I'm no where near magic, but I did feel pretty awesome about my session today. #2MileTuesday (not like I actually swam that far).

Yes!!! Especially lately. My mind and body full on try to revolt as soon as I start to run. In fact, if I didn't have an accountability partner to run with, I probably wouldn't have made it on as many runs this last month as I did. Who cares if we're going slow. Your lungs don't really hate you, they won't get up and leave. Our feet won't fall off. And our legs will still work when we're done. Don't let our drama queen bodies keep us from moving. #2MileTuesday

Why are you working out? What motivates you to get up and moving? If your reason doesn't excite or challenge you... it isn't going to get you to where you want to go. To be honest 'losing weight' often isn't a motivating enough reason. Why do you want to lose weight? Make it personal. Get passionate about it. Dig deep. Today I trained for endurance. @shredded_redwood made this plan to mimic muscle movements and fatigue of a triathalon. Be excited about your movement. Even if it kicks your butt! #2MileTuesday

Every time I run it is an argument. My body cries out to quit. My mind calmly replies back "you can make it". Most days my mind wins. Sometimes the body rules. If you fight with yourself when you run, you're not alone. I tell my clients, push to that level of discomfort (not pain, we don't push through pain), that spot where your body tells you to quit... then go just a little bit further. You have to fight to push through those boundaries to get farther. Otherwise that discomfort will keep you from growing every time. #2MileTuesday

I'll often feel frustrated in running when others are 'faster' than me. But so what? What I love most about running is that my only competition is me. Sure, passing other runners gives me a high. But in the end, all that matters is MY time. Don't make fitness out to be a fierce competition that scares the kind and compassionate away. There is room for all of us at the table.
