“Michele Pred’s “Reflections” series co-opts and reconfigures the hand held mirror, transforming it into a bright pink female gender sign, the ancient Greek symbol of Venus. The mirrors themselves are revamped; Pred has overlaid the words “Equal”, “Powerful”, and “Feminist” offering viewers the opportunity to complete the work with their own reflections redefined by positive language that subverts the typical narrative, suggesting a passive yet potent transformation of the audience-subject’s self-image.” 🚺 #thefutureisfemale #21cmuseumhotels #21clouisville

Please join us Saturday, June 24th at 6pm at #21cLouisville for the opening celebration of Pop Stars! Popular Culture and Contemporary Art. The reception begins with introductory remarks on the exhibition by Chief Curator Alice Gray Stites and a special lecture by featured visiting artist Titus Kaphar. Culling from the canon of art history, mining the mass media, and scouring the streets and screens, Pop Stars! demonstrates the dominance of the popular as today’s ubiquitous culture. The artists featured appropriate images and practices from commerce, science, politics, religion, sports, and technology, to illuminate recent shifts in how culture is being created and consumed, intertwining past and present in transformative new intersections of art and life. This event is free and open to the public. Pictured: Titus Kaphar (American) Ascension, 2016. Oil and wax on canvas with brass nails. #21cmuseum #louisville #tituskaphar #21cpopstars

Broken, but not shattered. That's my view of my America at this moment, but I'm ready to get to work repairing the damage and fight for equal rights for everyone. Are you? Detail shot of #monicacook 'Phosphene', part of The Future is Female exhibit. #21clouisville #21c #sculpture #glass

Behind this mirror is a wall of men's urinals. They are facing out at me and can see me as if looking through a window. I can't see them. Just my reflection. But I know that @ryan_gledhill is in there! @21chotels #21clouisville

This photograph by Israeli-born artist Adis Nes is modeled after Pablo Picasso’s 1906 painting, Boy Leading a Horse. Nes’s work frequently depicts adolescent boys (often young soldiers) in staged photographs that explore the construction of identity. Growing up as a Sephardic Jew and as a gay person, the artist felt set apart from a mainstream culture that promoted a particular type of masculinity associated with the image of the macho Israeli soldier. Please join us at 21c Louisville this Friday, September 23 from 8-11pm to celebrate the official opening of the Louisville Photo Biennial and the opening of Adi Nes: The Village.
