"I never cried when Pac died, but I probably will when Hov does, and if my tears hold value then I would drop one for every single thing he showed us, and I'll be standing in a puddle..." Jay Z and Drake, photographed during a studio session at Jungle City Studios in New York City by Lenny Santiago in May 2013. While visiting Beyoncé at the studio Drizzy heard Hov's "Pound Cake" verses: "I had the nerve to ask Jay if I could not only get that song from him, but if I could get the acappella because I had an idea for it. He sent me the two verses acappella—he told me, 'I never do this!'"
Drake then had Noah "40" Shebib get to work on a beat that would match his and Jay's verses, asking his sidekick for a Foxy Brown "Ill-Na-Na" vibe: "When we got the acapella from Hov for 'Pound Cake' I had a beat a hour later. It was like a classic Hov record [with] a flipped sample ... the beat brought the Jay verses to life. I sent the song back to Jay—and that was when it almost became [for MCHG again]. But he's such a good guy, he was like, 'I gave you my word.' I don't know what I'd do without that guy sometimes, he's just full of gems and advice." #jayz @champagnepapi @kodaklens @ovo40 @junglecitystudios #2013
