My workout playlist is all 1999 this week.
1999 was the beginning of an odd era for hiphop. A lot of classics dropped...Things Fall Apart, Black On Both Sides, Murda Muzik, etc. But for me, the art form was at a crossroads and would split in two in the coming years, with radio friendly pop-rap dominating the charts while 1000 new styles emerged ranging from Planet Asia to Aesop Rock to Natural Elements and more. At the same time that the genre was debasing itself before the world, it was reinventing itself behind the scenes. From Rawkus records to The World Famous Beat Junkies to Def Jux to Duck Down to Nature Sounds to Rhymesayers, I was hooked.
For me it started with a few records, and discovering Planet Asia on Sway & Tech's 'This Or That' album was one of those moments.
Peep the features list on this album though:
Eminem(at his peak)
Kool G Rap
Heltah Skeltah(Sean Price)
Pete Rock & CL Smooth
Big Daddy Kane
Dirty Unit(possibly best track on album)
Definitely one of the most underrated hiphop albums.
