One more by Giuseppe De Nittis - and it's a painting that invites all kinds of stories. The title says these two young women in extraordinarily low-cut dresses are returning from a dance. To me they look as if they might have had a really, really good time; there's a bit of a furtive "walk of shame" element to their posture. Or perhaps not. I can't find any interpretations or explanations for the painting online, so your guess is as valid as mine....;) "Ritorno Dal Ballo/Return from the Ball" by Giuseppe De Nittis, 1870. #guiseppedenitis #returnfromtheball #1870s #impressionism #impressionist #italianart #italianartist #morningafter #walkofshame #19thcentury #fashionhistory #costumehistory #arthistory #historyofart #heartart #artlover

And a back view- I had trouble finding one where half the train wouldn't get cropped out! Thanks to Tuula Auvinen for the photo. #pavictorianball2017 #victorian #1870s #bustle #historiccostume

For the historical fashion version of the "Favorite Color" challenge for #thevintagefashionchallenge I'm sharing my favorite historical gown I've ever made. This green and peach bustle dress was a bear to match the plaid, by it felt so elegant and fun to wear. Patterns by Truly Victorian.

Andrew is doing his very best to model this Victorian carpet bag! Its large, practical and packed with some serious character. The inside is lined with a cotton bengal stripe and is fitted with an internal divider and side pocket. The base is leather and is lined with paper luggage tickets, the original owner travelled to Dunbar often. It dates to c1870s and is in good aged condition with one or two inventive repairs

I adore hats, and I'm partial to a few feathers, but I'm not sure how I'd feel with an entire taxidermied bird corpse perched upon my head. That bird cage veil is quite something though! Hats circa 1870

Thinking about #booksmw and how I first got into historical clothing. I really can trace it back to when I was a kid and started reading American Girls books. Going through several cabinets of children's clothing this week has really brought that back. This 1870s ensemble (swipe for more photos and the matching dress) is too early to be something Samantha would have worn, but the colors and quality have the same sort of vibe!

The front and back of the left side of my drapes are stitched together with a placket. I've added false buttons to complete the look. #ishouldbeasleep #neverstop #justkeepsewing #costume #design #victorian #dothebustle #1870s #plaid

Moving along... today was full of drapes. I've only got one more drape to line and attach and then put on the waistband. Then the jacket. Then a hat. #everydayimbustling #dothebustle #bustledress #1870s #victorian #costume #design #plaid

A Broom brigade was a type of military-style women's drill team that marched with brooms instead of rifles. These women's organizations spreads throughout the United States during the 1880s. Enjoy a picnic in honor of the first official day of summer and the #SummerSolstice! The picnickers shown here are from a 19th century American trade card promoting Starin’s Glen Island, in Long Island Sound. The advertisement offered excursion tickets to the “most attractive day summer resort in America” for 40 cents, and an “old fashioned Rhode Island clam bake” for 75 cents. The card dates from aprox 1870–1900 and currently resides in @BPLboston’s Print Dept.
