Texas flags have been at half mast this past week to mourn the death of Former Governor Mark White. He served as the Texas governor from 1983 to 1987. White, a Democrat, focused on improving Texas education. He also helped Texas diversify its economy so it wasn’t so reliant on oil. Rest in Peace fellow Texan. #TexasFlag #TexasEducation #TexasGovernment

[Texas Tuesday] Texas Patriot, Peter H. Bell fought in every major conflict involving Texas. After fighting at the battle of San Jacinto, he joined the Texas Rangers where he achieved the rank of Captain. In 1845 Bell resigned from the Texas Rangers to enter the U.S. Army during the Mexican-American War. He later served as both the Governor of Texas and as a representative to the U.S. Congress. His career in politics ended when he received a commission as a Confederate Colonel at the outset of the Civil War. In addition to naming Bell County after Peter Bell, Texas created a memorial in honor of Bell. The memorial is located on the courthouse grounds of the city of Belton. •

On this day in 1835, Texans skirmished with the Mexican army near San Antonio at the battle of Concepción, the opening engagement in the siege of Bexar. Some ninety Texans under the command of James Bowie and James W. Fannin, Jr., defeated a force of 275 Mexican soldiers and two cannons. Despite being severely outmanned, the Texans defeated the Mexicans while only losing one soldier.

[Texas Tuesday] William Levi Taylor, aka Buck Taylor was the central figure in developing today’s modern romantic view of cowboys. Buck was the first cowboy to be hired on for Buffalo Bill’s Wild West show. Buck was so popular that many fictional stories were written about him and other cowboys. By the turn of the 1950s, America’s modern romantic view about the cowboy was cemented forever in pop culture due to Buck’s popularity.

Repost from @1836heritage using @RepostRegramApp - [Texas Tuesday] Claudia Alta Taylor (Lady Bird) Johnson, the wife of President Lyndon B Johnson, served as First Lady from 1963 - 1969. Before getting into politics, Lady Bird bought and owned an Austin radio and TV station which brought her a considerable amount of wealth. She is known for inventing the modern role of the First Lady because of the solo campaigning she did on behalf of her husband, the programs she implemented, and because she kept her own staff. However, one of the things Lady Bird Johnson is best known for is her efforts to beautify the national highways.⠀

Hey Patriots, we've decided to extend our fundraiser for Hurricane Harvey relief until the end of the weekend. If you're going to donate independently, please do your research about where to donate. Some organizations keep an outrageous amount of money for themselves and help very little. We'd love to be your outlet for donations through our products but if not, please make sure the foundations you choose are reputable. •

[Fun Fact Friday] The answer to our trivia question yesterday is, in fact, "The Big Tree" in Rockport. It is the oldest and arguably the most famous live oak in the world. It was once also the largest tree in Texas (until 2003 when a larger tree was discovered in Brazoria County, TX). Astoundingly, it survived Hurricane Harvey with little to no damage. Its roots run deep just like mine. Check out yesterday's Texas Trivia post for more facts! - Survived Hurricane Harvey - Survived a naval bombardment during the Civil War
- Survived over 40 major hurricanes as well as floods, droughts, and wildfires. •

[Texas Tuesday] Charles Siringo was born in Matagorda County, Texas. He served in the Pinkertons as a detective and was one of the first detectives to go under cover. He infiltrated numerous gangs which resulted in hundreds of arrests. Siringo was even able to infiltrate Butch Cassidy’s train robber gang. It was the vital information he leaked that lead to Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid fleeing to South America. #TexasTuesday

[Fun Fact Friday] Our previous fun fact was as follows: "The Texas flag is the only state that can fly at the same height as the American flag." However, we stand corrected by @ian.mckee, as he's informed us that "...there is no flag code that states that Texas or any other state has federal recognition to fly their flag the same height as the US flag. The US flag is not enforced but merely put in place as guidelines on how to properly display your flag." That being said, I guess Texas is the only state bold enough to do it. #TexasBold #TexasFlag #AmericanFlag #Austin #AustinTX #TexasStateCapitol

[TexasTuesday] Bill McDonald, known to be an outstanding marksman, is considered to be one of the “four great captains of the Texas Rangers. McDonald was an outstanding marksman who used his reputation to intimidate and disarm his opponents.” He led a Ranger company which was known for its success in fighting outlaw gangs and resolving deadly feuds, losing only one man in his 16 years of service. After the Brownsville Affair, he was said to be “a man that would charge hell with a bucket of water.” Bill McDonald has been inducted into the Texas Ranger Hall of Fame. His tombstone carries the motto: "No man in the wrong can stand up against a fellow that's in the right and keeps on a-comin'." #TexasTuesday #TexasRangers

[Texas Tuesday] Benjamin McCulloch was born in Tennessee, but left his home to join Davy Crockett for the Texas Revolution. After the war ended, McCulloch was elected to the Texas House of Representatives, but he grew bored of of politics and joined the Texas Rangers. McCulloch was promoted to Brigadier General in the Confederate army. McCulloch was killed by a Union sharpshooter at the Battle of Pea Ridge while scouting the enemy positions. #TexasTuesday #TexasRevolution #TexasRangers #DavyCrockett #TexasGovernment #ConfederateArmy
