#TBT #FBF one year ago today. Looking back, these pictures foreshadowed so much... it was the last day of direct action training @theindianproblem was requested to give to the original members of the NoDAPL movement at Sacred Stone well before Oceti Sakowin was established.
This is where I brought the concept of combining indigenous spirituality and direct action tactics by creating sage bundle lockboxes which were wrapped in sacred colors and attached with tobacco prayer ties.
One of the most poignant direct actions against DAPL and the state was as on October 27th, at Bridge 134. That day as most of the world watched North Camp being raided, 4 of us Indigenous veterans organized 30-40 water protectors to make a stand holding off 250 private security, police, military, and all of their armored assault vehicles for 7 hours, halting their advancement to further brutalize Indigenous bodies.
Had that concentration of militarized forces crossed the choke point we created at Bridge 134 that day, arrest numbers would have doubled and possibly tripled the documented 141, thereby demoralizing the remaining water protectors and possibly crippling the movement.
This feat was accomplished without injury or arrest using what ever was around and whatever we had on hand to defend our land and our people, which a majority of the time, such as this day, was just wood. The tree and water spirits recognized the gravity of our mission that day on the bridge and ensured our protection then and for many months beyond into the winter... This is all that we had.
This is all we needed.
This is Indigenous resistance.
Special shout out the the #Trees.
