It is my honor to share with you 'Marama'.. a Māori couture collection. Each garment is handsewn & embody the stories of my tipuna. From my Nanny Kirituia & her sister Puawai. Kurungaituku, half bird half woman, from the well known legend of Hatupatu. When someone passes in our whānau we take them passed Hatupatu rock on their last journey to the urupa. The sisters who gave Aotearoa volcanic activity Te Hoata & Te Pupu. The great heroine in the land war at Orakau 1864, Ahumai Te Paerata. My 3rd great grandmother Werohia, Chieftess of Ongaroto. Our ancestor Raukawa's mother, Mahinaarangi. A beauty from Ngati Kahungungu & descendant of Paikea. Raukore, sister of my tipuna Whaita, who's life was tragically taken on this land you see behind me. You will all get to know them personally as I reveal this collection.
The meaning of Marama is Moon in Māori, but it also means clarity, a clear understanding.. Māramatanga. These women are all in my DNA, without any of them I simply wouldn't exist. As I learnt their stories I realised I wouldn't be here today if they didn't fight the great wars they fought, if they didn't make the sacrifices they made. Even though they all lived in different century's their common thread was unconditional love for their whanau, & love for their whenua. Our blood & love bind us all through generations & time.
By getting to know them, I discovered who I truly am in this journey. Sometimes to find yourself you need to close your eyes. Remember where you came from to know exactly where you are going. I feel empowered & an urge to use my lifetime to make an impact as those before me have.
This collection is my debut.. Although my upcoming releases are Urban labels, I wanted to showcase my extent. You will see traditional techniques, infused with my own modern fashion aesthetic & love for enhancing the female body.
