Wasting no time, I swing a leg over the top of the gates and leap to the ground in one fell swoop. The car zooms past just a few seconds after my feet hit the ground.

“Yessss! We did it!”

My proclamation is peppered with a hint of relief at my sudden arrival on the public side of Nara Dreamland’s gated perimeter. A wistful glance through the fence reinforces that I’ll never get to explore the famous theme park again.

Michael leans over to adjust his gear. His profusely steaming back is evidence of our high-stakes escape.

“This is what we call a hard-fought haikyo victory,” I declare in my best Richard Attenborough impression. Haikyo is the Japanese word for ruins.

Michael laughs, “It’s adrenaline, pure adrenaline!”

We’re proceeding down the road when I raise the question of exploring the offices across the road. “I wonder if we can get up there?”, I ask while pointing at an enclosed rooftop gazebo.

Michael is in, without hesitation. “If we go around the fence quickly, we could get inside the parking area and into the main offices.”

An hour’s worth of exploring the long-dormant offices reveals a treasure trove of Nara Dreamland’s history. We stumble across original 1960 blueprints, watercolour ride renderings, scale models, and other remnants of Dreamland’s storied past. It’s a wonderful archeological bookend to our morning of peril on Aska’s southern summit.

Entering a random office, I look down to see a bright orange packet of tickets on the floor. “Michael, check this out! They look so...fresh...like they’re frozen in time.”

We soon climb up several flights of steps to the enclosed rooftop gazebo. From this protected viewpoint, we’re the final witnesses to Aska’s imminent destruction. A backhoe brutally claws at Aska’s wooden bones until, late in the afternoon, the roller coaster finally collapses under its own weight.

Sayonara Aska, the dream is over.

Security and the demolition crew seem to be so oblivious to our presence this early on a Saturday morning that Michael (@gakuranman) and I reach the abandoned theme park’s perimeter fence without being detected. We huddle on the ground beside the locked – and spiked – gates.

I nod toward the top of the gate to Michael, “You go ahead – I want a shot from this angle of the collapsed northern section.”

Michael drops his gear to the ground for ease of climbing and then begins his ascent. I’ll pass our gear over to him and then start my own ascent. This choreography of tag team gear handoffs is a well-practiced strategy and tradition amongst urban explorers.

The gates rattle and sway as Michael scales the fence like Spiderman. Fortunately, five of the middle spikes were broken off of the gates, and their gap just happens to be wide enough to fit two thrill-seeking adventure photographers. I watch Michael’s ascent for a second and then return to taking what will be my last photo in Nara Dreamland. The moment weighs heavily on me as I hear Michael’s feet hit the ground. He’s out.

Michael warns me, “There’s bits of broken metal on the top, so be careful how you climb over it.”

I hurriedly pack my gear and then pass our bags one by one over the gates. A gap under the gates is high enough to allow me to slip our tripods under it and into Michael’s waiting hands.

“This isn’t going to be pretty,” I grin to Michael. “Have you ever broken the fall of a fully grown Canadian man?”

My ascent over the gates is the brute-force version of Michael’s more graceful moves. If his application of physics is akin to a top-speed motorcycle, then I’m more like a muscle car.

Just as I reach the top of the fence, the sound of an approaching car pierces the already tense air.

With a silent nod to each other, we rise out of the shattered debris and begin to make our way to the partially demolished Aska roller coaster’s precariously suspended northern section. We're completely exposed as we struggle to navigate the giant wooden splinters and metal beams.

Each foot forward over the scattered mess is another risky step toward a possible sighting by security or workers. The crunching sound of debris under our feet belies the ninja-esque maneuvering skills we’ve both developed over so many years of exploring abandoned buildings. Even so, our spontaneous choreography feels like a hasty scramble rather than seasoned experience. Within seconds, Michael (@gakuranman) and I take cover in a jumble of vines and weeds under the Aska's northern remnants.

Twenty minutes have passed since I first took cover amongst Aska’s fateful debris field. Through the overgrowth, we can see a steady trickle of vehicles and workers streaming into the former land of dreams. Time is running out, and we’re facing a potentially nightmarish outcome.

Despite the urgency of the situation, another twenty minutes pass as we maintain our cover. And then, suddenly, a lull in the worker’s activity occurs. Without knowing if pause will be brief or otherwise, we decide to make a desperate run for the security fence. A small hill obscures our view of the locked gate, but a quick review of Google Satellite instructs us about which direction to proceed.

We dart over the obscuring mound and sprint full tilt toward the fence.

Just then, the sound of an approaching car raises our tension levels to their peak. Michael (@gakuranman) cautiously pokes his head above the partially demolished roller coaster's broken beams to see a worker exit the car and open its trunk. The uniformed man remains oblivious to our intrusion despite being in a direct line of sight of our position.

Michael crouches back down. He frets, “Time is running out. I’m concerned that more workers will be arriving very soon.” The built-in charm and charisma of his British accent are gone, so I know he’s serious.

As if almost on queue, two trucks roll up behind the car. It seems like every worker, and his dog is pouring into the site! The odds of an undetected escape are becoming slimmer by the second.

"We just have to time it right. We've both been in worse situations, so I know we can get out of this one alive." My declaration is a mixture of seasoned confidence and calculated hope.

With a silent nod to each other, we rise out of the rubble and begin to make our way to Aska's northern section. We're completely exposed as we struggle over the giant wooden splinters.

…to be continued.
