As one of the founders of Cold Ink Art Group, a collective of young artists who aspire to break out of conventional rules and to explore ink art with a rational perspective, Yu Yang captures the traditional aesthetic vision on ink paintings as well as the relationship between ink and paper, and creatively interpret it with minimalist shapes in three dimensions.

Geometry is the simplest form of art and design. In Yu Yang's Blending No.2, the in-between spaces of his squares and rectangular shades is where creativity meets rationality, and spirituality meets functionality.

Home is like a museum of oneself, and we are all artist in our own way, arranging each corner that tells a story about our personality, habit, taste and belief. Committed to giving home a deeper meaning other than merely a habitat and to enrich the quality and individuality of life, 3812 gallery and colourliving have joined hands to form "Art In Residence", an initiative to bring art into life by offering professional art consultancy service with the focus of harmoniously infusing contemporary Chinese aesthetics into modern Western design.

Under the curatorial concept of 3812 gallery, bedroom is not only a place for one to find comfort but also a sanctuary for self-reflection and deep thoughts. From its title to the use of medium and traditional colors, Yu Yang’s Ink Object – Animal Year exudes Oriental spirituality, adding cultural element to the thought-out design of the bedroom. The gradual change of hues toward the center of the work emits a celestial light that shines on the emotional side of self.

For Alys bed, the Buratti brothers designed a very effective shape that can provide users with comfort and protection. The bed frame can be placed at two different heights, and the bed surface was designed to be low specifically to suggest an effect of suspension and floating of the super-comfortable mattress.

At the #SmartTalk, Calvin Hui, the co-founder and artistic director of 3812 gallery has also expressed his view that "buying a piece furniture or hanging a piece of art on the wall is not enough for an aesthetic living environment. The colours, lighting, spaces and artworks need to come together for a cohesive visual journey."

At the #SmartTalk, Denise Lau, director of colourliving expressed her perspective on the resemblance of designer furniture and art. With the precise craftsmanship in Yu Yang's minimalistic artworks and state-of-the-art furnitures from B&B Italia, together they shape the unique character of each home.

Some modern designers like to use oval, square and triangle to resemble the variety of shapes in nature. In his work Blending No. 2, Yu Yang used squares and rectangles of different shades to depict a landscape in abstraction through which the relationship between traditional ink and paper is scrutinized. Both the artist and designers are trying to bring us back to the origin of nature and encourage us to discover the value of our tradition with a contemporary vision.

The unprecedented collaboration of "Boundless Imagery" has received very positive feedback. As the Director of colourliving, Denise Lau said, "the chemistry created by the painting of Yu Yang's art and B&B Italia's furniture works like magic!" Yu Yang also mentioned that the presentation was out of his expectation, to him, it is a perfect match between Chinese contemporary art and Italian craftsmanship.

Yu Yang solo exhibition : Boundless Imagery

While the essence of traditional ink art is transformed into minimalist abstraction by Yu Yang’s analytical mind, it takes much boldness and imagination to rearrange the imagery with an innovative approach. Yu Yang’s works take us to the in-between space where rationality and creativity converge, an imagery of the engagement between traditional culture and contemporary vision.

The art of Yu Yang breaks the boundaries of approach and perspective in traditional two-dimensional paintings. Juxtaposing his works with the state-of-the-art Italian furniture, "Boundless Imagery" transcends the realms of convention, tradition and culture, demonstrating the modernity as well as the limitless potential of Chinese contemporary ink art.

Yu Yang’s works of the colour stripes are mainly wooden stripes formed in a checkered pattern. Yu re-orders the relationship between space and plane with the delicate vicissitude of ink and the musicality of alternating Chinese paints. The spacing between the wooden stripes, the transition between the stripes of colours, and the overlapping of space and colours within the frame form a unique aesthetic sense of space.
