I think we all know that @luxsushi loves sushi. Here I am trying to hit Michelin around the world & Lux just keeps going back to Japan 10 times a year. He loves sushi. One time, he was craving it so much, he made me stop by this really awful conveyor belt sushi joint. Between you & me, it was bad. He'll be embarassed that I'm writing this, but he got his fix. I'm just saying, that's how much he likes sushi. He'll force bad sushi on me just to remind himself of the good stuff he craves in Japan. And, it's true: Once you've had sushi in Japan, its hard to go back to sushi in the US. This is fact. If you've ever had the opportunity to stop by even a random sushi bar outside of Tsukiji, you'll understand. Even the worst of Japan might still challenge the average sushi counter in the US.
Personally, I cannot stand bad sushi. I'm always a little suspicious of restaurants that serve california rolls or squeeze wasabi from a tube or drown their dishes in eel sauce. And if a sushiya smells like fish when I walk in, I immediately check out. I'd just as soon avoid sushi if it can't be good sushi.
But despite the seemingly indiscrimate love for which Lux showers this culinary craft, he still has the palate to guide me in the right direction outside of Japan. For my [other] best friend's wife's birthday, Lux (and @susan_icecoco -- Thanks Susan!) recommended an excellent sushiya in Shiki Beverly Hills. You could do Shunji, Ginza Onadera, Matsumoto, Q, or perhaps even Urasawa for a stack of cash. But if you're looking for an elegant sushi meal at an affordable price point, I quite liked Shiki. Adept technique that afternoon from Head Chef Yamada & wonderful service from the always lovely @lotus30, Shiki BH was definitely a pleasant dining experience.
