It’s said that the best camera, is the one you have with you. For years, I was looking for the perfect camera I could throw in my backpack or briefcase on the daily, without worrying about scratching the lens or damaging the camera. My Nikon N75 and Nikon F3 have been great go-to cameras for daily shooting however, after digging through a box of old gear, I found this little guy. The #Olympus35RD, a tiny #35mm #rangefinder camera produced in 1975. It’s the perfect size to be thrown in a backpack thanks to its all metal construction. I developed my first roll of Ilford HP5 from this camera at school this past semester and the negatives turned out alright. I acquired it from @facepaintingbyemma [[ See her try Λguardiente in my YouTube video series, LINK ON BIO]] a few years ago. She picked it up from a garage sale, sent it in for repair, didn’t work, gave me to me, was thrown in a box for a few years, then about year ago, I dug it out, sent it in for repair, there it sat at the repair shop for almost half a year and finally picked up coincidentally, on her wedding day. Of all days huh? 🌿

My Grandfather calls it Holy Water. People in the rural, practically hidden town of Eloxochitlán, in the region of Papaloapan, in the northern most point in #Oaxaca, go as far as calling it a gift from the Gods themselves. This rare spirit is better known as Λguardiente, and is only distilled locally in micro batches, almost illicitly by a selected few. Though both #Mezcal and Λguardiente parallel each other with distillation & fermentation, Λguardiente is distilled from sugar cane alone and not commercially produce and acquiring a few liters requires a two day journey outside the capital. Describing the smoky, sweet aromas of this spirit is complicated, the smell almost burns your nostril cold. Surprisingly, it’s refreshing. However, it gives you a punch in the face, burns your throat for a few seconds, then leaves a very sweet after taste note. How did I acquired three liters? We asked the owner of the eatery we had lunch at if she would kindly lets us know where to buy some. The sweet old lady had her daughter walk us over to a tailor. The tailor’s shop was lit by outside light, it was dusty, unorganized but felt fresh compared to the outside hot, humid weather. Then I saw it, the gorgeous, teal tinted antique glass jug filled with Λguardiente. The tailor was a very knowledgeable old timer and after a customary shot, sold me three liters worth in a Coke bottle. My Λguardiente is now it’s kept in a tall glass bottle and this cute clay jug.

Life is measured out in cycles. The land’s cycle is marked by the flowering and maturing of the agave. For the agave, a cycle is marked by the coming of the rains. For the horse, whose powerful muscles bear the weight of the massive round stone that grinds the agave hearts, a cycle is made after every turn of the stone. For the #Mezcal distiller, the last drop of mezcal out of the alembic, represents the end of yet another working day. For the Mezcal drinker, the cycle begins every time a new bottle is opened. What a true drinker looks for in Mezcal is heightened sensitivity, not dulling of the senses. Mezcal uplifts the senses. Conversation flows more freely, eruditely even, and far more cheerfully when a bottle of Mezcal is given a place of honor, at the table. 🌿

The second I smelled the five liter tank filled with this sought after #Mezcal, I knew I was about to taste a Mezcal like no other. The aroma of this Mezcal is similar to being under a waterfall. On par to taste, it’s very refreshing, goes down very smoothly, with a slight herbaceous aftertaste note. It has a slight green/yellow tint, due to its purity from single distillation and young age. My grandfather has been buying this Mezcal for decades now, from a man known as Don Ren. He told me how people spend days throughout the city looking for Don Rene, for a chance to try this elusive Mezcal, yes, even local politicians. Don Rene does it old school, he personally picks up the Mezcal from San Baltazar Chichicapam, a town located in the southern sierra region of #Oaxaca, then sells it by the liter to those whom have purchased from him before. So even getting a shot of this Mezcal is near impossible as you have to know someone who already knows him! I was fortunate enough to sit down and talk Mezcal with Don Rene when he delivered the five liter tank to my Grandparents house a few months ago. By far this is the most prized Mezcal in my collection, but I think it’s mostly due to the sentimental value it has with my Grandfather and how he drinks no other Mezcal, but this one.
・・・
Shoutout to @jessicapaule, who helped me acquire this gorgeous bottle to keep Don Rene’s distinguished Mezcal in. Thanks to her gorgeous Instagram feed and a few days of persistent research. 🌿

On my visit to #Oaxaca in January, I took a stroll to Mezcaloteca for a #Mezcal tasting/history lesson, so exclusive this place, that you’re only allowed in with prior reservations. An hour and a half later with co-owner Silvia, teaching me how to identify genuine Mezcal, I fell head over heels for this brand and Mezcaleria, with its old world feel. Silvia is a living, breathing Mezcal encyclopedia, is extremely patient and insanely knowledgeable. It was and is, the best Mezcal I’ve tried in my life! Next to Mezcal Cuish of course, both being my favorite labels. Mezcaloteca is unique in that they have Mezcales from various regions of the Republic with an emphasis on the Maestros that produced each one. Naturally, the ones from Oaxaca were favorites ones. Mezcaloteca’s Mezcales are sweet and delectably smoky, with very earthy end notes, ranging from 45% to 60% proof, whilst managing to go down smooth, due to their strict artisanal cultivation, distillation and fermentation processes. In fact, the 60% Punta Verde, shown here, is as thick as agave nectar. I don’t know ya’ll, but I’m seriously considering picking up, moving back to Oaxaca permanently and work in the Mezcal industry from there on out. 🌿

Amazing, beautiful work is created when a collective of artists come together with a focused goal in mind. Along with an entire set of campaign photos for Bone’s Lingerie #Wedding Collection, I stitched together this quick (it actually took hours to film and edit) video for your enjoyment. I’ll be posting more photos of the campaign throughout the coming weeks. So be sure to turn on post notifications to not miss said future posts and follow my talented contributors on their respective Instagram accounts and of course the best compliment, is by supporting us at what we do best.

This campaign was made possible thanks to my talented contributors who are more than proficient at what they do. I’m not new to video, as I dabbled back in High School. However, my hats off to every videographer out there. Concept, filming, editing and encoding is very time consuming to say the least, and a bit frustrating, even with the #vintage look I was going for. Well worth it though. 🌿

The contribution by women to the history of Mezcal has virtually gone unnoticed, though their contributions were a decisive factor of the industry's survival during #Mexico’s prohibition era, (circa 1920’s) when #Mezcal was fabricated and distributed clandestinely. Women working in the industry were known as Mezcalilleras or Mezcaleras. During prohibition, women turned to its distribution as a perfect complement to their husband’s work, acting as business administrators and pillars of the family during the long periods of time when the men would go into the mountains to produce mezcal illegally. Up until the 70’s, women primarily sold mezcal in bulk, door-to-door in neighboring communities within #Oaxaca and at the time, Maestra Mezcaleras (producers of Mezcal) were unheard of. During my studies of this Elixir of Gods, I learned that like cooking, the feelings and emotions of the Maestro or Maestra, are unconsciously infused into the Mezcal during its production. If the they were happy or of sweet nature, then in translation, the Mezcal will be sweet, however, should they have strong tempers, the Mezcal will have a more, dry, punchier aroma. Don’t remember exactly how I found this Mezcal on my last trip to Oaxaca, glad I did though, as it soon became my absolute favorite Mezcal. An earthy, herbaceous, exceptionally smoky and slightly humid wild Tobala agave, made for Mezcal Cuish by Maestra Mezcalera Berta Vásquez from the small, mountainous region town of San Baltazar Chichicapam. 🌿

The only thing I appreciate during the summer, aside from it’s spectacular sunsets, is the way the sun's light softly wraps around everything, creating this gorgeous, airy feel in photos. Surprisingly, this look works best during a long summer afternoon, assuming you’re in #California. You can pull of the look throughout the year, but your window of opportunity is severely cut due to the sunset kicking in around 4pm, especially in the winter. Compared to the summer, the buffer time kicks in at 5pm to around 8pm. Now as much as I love the esthetic qualities of a bright summer day, I despise when I have to walk in it, which I pretty much do everyday. Which sucks, ‘cause aside from getting toasted out there, I’m usually effing and essing the entire walk to wherever it is I'm going, and it’s usually uphill. 🌿

It doesn't matter which medium you choose to take photos with, either film, digital, SLR or mirrorless, because labels are for cameras, not people. Lets appreciate photography for what it is, a way for us photographers to connect with strangers, to build stronger bonds with our friends, to make people fall in love when they see themselves in our photos, to capture moments that slip through our very hands every second. If you’re a new photographer, use the camera you’re comfortable with. I'm tired of seeing people act like children talking down on someone else's gear. If you don't like it, buy them a new camera, simple as that. The same goes towards potential clients of all photographers, obsessing over the gear, no one obsesses over the tools people that make our food use, so let’s not obsess over the tools our artists use, but rather the final product we produce. Working at cameras stores and photo labs most of my adult life has made me appreciate all the tools in our trade and I'm thankful for that. Yes, I’m guilty of talking shit every now and again in the past, so I ain’t throwing the first stone either. And this issue isn’t exclusive to the photography community, as I see it in every other community, cars, makeup, smartphones, the list goes on. I feel that as long as photographers keep it simple, support local micro businesses, the artists and vendors within our respective communities and continue to purchase American made products, we will keep America great and our love for film alive for years to come. 🌿

MacArthur Park was the first neighborhood I lived in when I moved from Oaxaca in the early 90’s. I have a collection of memories growing up here, especially since I experienced many things for the first time, pizza, Power Rangers and Original Tommy’s to name a few. We lived here for about three years, moved to South Central for about ten, finally posting up in Palmdale. So it was no surprise the first time I moved out from my Parents around 2006, my then girlfriend and I decided to set up base in MacArthur Park, as an homage to my Parents new beginning in this country. We lived in the area for a few years, later moving to Riverside for a bit. However, due to our creative differences, we parted ways there after. Aside from the constant noise, my only complaint of #MacArthurPark would be the lack of parking and the meter maids driving up and down the street every two minutes like vultures seeing who's car they can massacre! 🌿

Over the last twelve years, #DTLA has gone through profound changes, which are good or bad depending on your politics and socioeconomic status. Personally, I don’t agree with some of the changes, because all of my childhood storefronts have been wiped away into nothing, on the other hand, I do appreciate how accessible it is to travel to Downtown; mainly due to MTΛ’s implementation of the Gold Line from East L.Λ. to Downtown. I was living in Palmdale when construction was completed, so I couldn’t care less for it at the time, who know that a few years later the #MetroGoldLine would become my main source of daily transportation. I’m not against completely against the changes though, as I do patronize a handful local breweries and distilleries. So to you my faithful reader, I ask for your thoughts on the current state of Downtown L.Λ., below are a few questions you could answer, only one is fine.
・・・
Have you ever been to Downtown L.Λ.?
・・・
What do you miss about Downtown L.Λ.?
・・・
If you were running things, what would you change/bring back/keep?
・・・
Do you agree or disagree with the changes Downtown L.Λ. is going through?
・・・
What do you hate most about Downtown L.Λ.? I for one hate the traffic and the expensive ass hell parking fees.
・・・
What is your most fond memory of Downtown L.Λ.? My fondest memory was when my Dad was tricked into buying a stereo box filled with a cinder block! This was in the early 90’s by the way. 🌿
