So what am I fundraising for? Great question. I’m planning on conducting interview type of videos, think of Control, Otro Rollo and Worth It. The format of my channel will give each of my guests one of three options:
a ) a #Mezcal degustación, in which I’ll show ‘em how to properly drink & identify mezcal

b ) a Oaxacan dish tutorial, in which I’ll teach ‘em how to cook a pre-hispanic dish

c ) a street food vendor hang out, witty banter included
・・・
The purpose of the channel is to promote local artists, businesses and the Oaxacan culture along with the local Mexican culture found around L.Λ. I want to document the stories of the daily hustlers, show you Mezcal is not what you might think it is and show you how easy it is to make Oaxacan food.
・・・
Ambitious I know right? That’s where you come in. All I’m asking from you is a generous donation of a whopping whole single dollar. Believe it or not, just one dollar will go a long way, as making video content will take a team to produce. Plus, we’ll need funding to pay for the Mezcal, ingredients for food and pay our taco guys. Not to mention the microphones, lights, editing software and the camera rental bill that’ll rack up after a few videos.
・・・
So if you #believeinfilm, if you believe in the local business, if you believe in supporting the local artist, if you believe in supporting the immigrant community and if you believe in keeping the Mexican culture alive and well, please, donate one dollar to our campaign. Thank you.🌿

Of all things to do in #Oaxaca, one of the best things I’d look forward to do during my stay, was taking the day trip to #Zaachila for its outdoor market on Thursdays; an old world town that sits a gorgeous, but bumpy forty minute bus ride from my Grandma’s house. Why do I have such fond memories of this place? Perhaps because it kicks my childhood memories of going there on the steam train many years ago. Or maybe it’s because of the delicious food at every stand, tacos de carnitas, el pulque, las memelas, las empanadas, and the artisanal ice cream that only found in Zaachila. But whatever the reason may be, one thing is certain, my Grandparents, Mom, cousins and I, would find ourselves here every Thursday. In the end, perhaps the place you’re in doesn't matter as much, as long as you’re with the ones you love.🌿

I believe in simplicity. My photography, pricing, and lifestyle reflect that simplicity. So much so, that I’ve developed a firm, one camera, one lens, one film stock rule. Where I choose to use one camera lens combination, whether it’s for a wedding, quinceañera or when I travel somewhere new. This allows me to be fully present with my clients, models and fully absorb wherever place I may be. Most of the time, I end up taking my #NikonF3 when I travel, due to its simple controls and old world look and feel of the camera. Since the F3 is a manual focus camera, it excels with static objects, however, when it comes to photographing people, it’s a bit trickier, especially since I need glasses to see fine details. That didn’t stop us from setting up this improve photo sesh of my cousin however, or is he my nephew? He’s my cousin’s kid, so what does that make him? Cousin no? For this photo sesh, we used The Convent of Cuilápam as our backdrop, one of the most haunted churches in #Oaxaca, believed to have been built by the Devil himself. The wardrobe and props we used, were local merchants, proudly made the old fashioned way, by hand. 🌿

Summer Imperfect Pt. III: I wasn’t taught to say I love you, nor was I taught to show physical affection, which had a minor effect on past relationships. Instead, I was taught to show my love and appreciation for those around me by cooking for them, or at the very least, sharing a meal with them, as simple as the meal might be. In #Oaxaca, food is everything, whether it’s to celebrate a birthday, a wedding, even someone's death, food has and continues to be the cornerstone of our local culture. Growing up, my Mom said I didn’t like medicine (still don’t) so if I had a stomach ache, ear ache, etc., she’ll buy me a Gansito at a tiendita, as the one shown here and my ache would miraculously be healed. As I’ve gotten older, some have found it strange as to why I love food so much, especially how I can eat, eat and eat. I would explain to them it’s a cultural thing, surprisingly, most wouldn’t understand, even Hispanics themselves, especially once I started dating. I’ve been single for the last nine years however, why? I’m not sure to be honest. I guess I’m still trying to figure myself out, especially with my new found love towards #Mezcal and the constant findings of the Oaxacan culture. Believe it or not, I wasn’t exposed to the #Mexican culture as I am now in East L.Λ., since I grew up in Historic Filipinotown, South Central, Palmdale and La Cañada. But I tell myself, don’t change for you, don’t change a thing for me, I will wait for you endlessly, as of sugar and ice I am made. From years before. 🌿

As I’ve gotten older, #Halloween hasn’t been as cool as I remember it. I thought, has it been because I’m not a kid and I’m not exposed to Halloween as much as if I were in grade school, or is it because the current political snowflake climate is essentially watering down Halloween, because everything is offensive these days. Or is it because the retail industry doesn’t push Halloween as much, I mean shit, some malls (not that I go to them) already have Christmas decorations up. Halloween is wack now and I haven’t had a memorable one since I was kid, then I remembered my trip to #Oaxaca this time a year ago. If you’re in Oaxaca between mid #October to early November, there is no way you’ll miss the Halloween vibe. Everywhere you go, you’ll be greeted with altars, muerto decorations, the mercados are filled with vendors catering to the day and the numerous #comparsa parades throughout the city and local colonias. And then I realized, Halloween is still cool and #DiaDeLosMuertos is very much alive and thriving in #Mexico, people of all ages still celebrate it, local merchants still cater to this holiday, people still wear racy costumes without worrying about the P.C. police, the smells, flavors and textures are very much alive, just not in this country. The same can be said about most holidays however, since someone will find it offensive in one form or another. 🎃

If this is isn’t proof that @lamag doesn’t give a shit about immigrants, small businesses and most importantly local culture, then I don’t know what else to tell you. The current November issue pg. 62, article, All Hail the Pastry King, is where I direct your attention. The writer, @thejoelstein, a self proclaimed ‘Λngelino,’ admits to stalking and kissing ass to pastry Chef, @dominiqueansel (French immigrant, inventor of the coveted Cronut) in hopes of getting ‘special treatment’ once his new bakery opens early next month at The Grove. The Λ-hole writer is then appalled to learn Ansel doesn’t care who you are once you’re in his bakery, as he has a firm, no-cutting rule, as to provide equal hospitality to all guests. The douchebag writer closes off by saying, “no matter how good his food is, he’s never going to make it in this town.”
・・・
To be clear, Joel Stein is even’t a true ‘Λngelino,’ this clown is a New Jersey native, so L.Λ. Magazine, if you’re reading this, stop hiring transplants who claim to to be L.Λ. natives, then virtue signal us as to who’s gonna make it in this town and who’s not. I’m tired of you bastards claiming you know everything and everyone is this town and the constant stepping on those of us who hustle in our local, respective communities daily, the real L.Λ natives. Then turning around and slander those who don’t fit your mold, to further promote your unwanted gentrifying agenda.
・・・
And for the record, I hate the word Λngelino. 🌿

Located on the outskirts of downtown #Oaxaca, Panteón General serves as the resting place for the city’s eldest of residents, some going as far back as the 1800’s and some with unmarked graves. It was one of the most gorgeous cemeteries I’ve seen yet and definitely worth a visit while in Oaxaca. During my visit, I learned a family cousin works at the #cemetery, we did not see him that day when we stopped however. After I snapped a few photos of the cemetery, my Mom, cousin and I, decided to walk to El Zocalo for ice cream. As we walked on the sidewalk I noticed there was no shade, so I suggested we cross the street on the shaded side. As we walked, we heard a loud crash and saw a trailer hauling giant pipes, hit a palm tree, drag it, pulled a few power cables in its path, blowing out a transformer, causing it to fall to the ground, sending sparks everywhere! Needless to say, the truck driver did not stop, leaving some serious damage behind him. The creepy thing we realized afterwards, was the fact that the transformer the truck hit, would of been right above us had we not crossed the street. 🌿

It’s no secret that once I’m done with school, I’m permanently moving back to the magical land of #Oaxaca, yes, permanently. Honestly, after hanging out with my Grandparents, cousins and the wonderful people out there last year, I figured my talents will be better served locally in Oaxaca. One the best things I’m looking forward to is going back to a slower, earth rooted lifestyle, which I can understand is not for everyone. During this time each year, we come to celebrate Day of the Dead, with lavish altars honoring our passed loved ones, decorating them with Pan de Muerto, #Mezcal, fruits and the meals our loved ones enjoyed most when alive. The epitome to each altar is the aromatic #Marigold flower, other wise known as Flor de Muerto (Flower of the Dead). The little slice of land that’s waiting for me back at home has served as a temporary Marigold garden my Grandmother has graciously taken care of over the last few years. This photo was taken a year ago this time and boy was it hot, but perfect for these gorgeous flowers, this buch was what my Grandmother collected on a single trip. So this hot weather we’re experiencing here in L.Λ. right now, is heavily reminiscent of the weather I experienced there a year ago. Maybe Oaxaca is calling out to me huh. 🌿

A year ago this time, I took a six month pilgrimage in my home state of #Oaxaca, #Mexico. After my last trip in 2008, I was inordinately excited to go back. This visit ended up reinforcing the person I became after my the whole ‘finding your self’ phase in my teen’s and early twenties, my Grandmother, yeah, I turned out to be just like her. However, I think our personalities and traits are always there, it just takes a few pushes from life to flush ‘em out. I learned a great deal about Oaxaca this time around, from the production of Mezcal, to how mole is made, the lifestyles of the surrounding small towns, but most importantly, I learned where my family is from. That’s where this photo was taken, in the small town of San Pedro Tidaá, the birthplace of my Great Grandparents. The hillside village sits about an hour outside of the town of Nochixtlán, which in turn is a three hour drive from Oaxaca. Upon arriving in Nochixtlán, we eat some of the best barbacoa I’ve had in life, as it was served on an agave piece, at the local mercado. After an hour taxi drive towards San Pedro Tidaá, we payed our respects to my Great Grandfather’s tomb in the #cemetery you see here, and I even saw the resting place of his mother. At least we believe that was her tomb, as this cemetery is so old, that some of the tomb’s headpieces were eroded to small unmarked stones, some tomb’s were even dated 1800’s! This day trip was definitely a humbling one, as I finally got to see where my family had its beginning.

Have you had the opportunity to visit the birthplace of your family? 🌿

Rooted to the earth like living monoliths, amid a landscape that conspires against all hope, the agave watches as generations of men come and go one after another. Their spiky leaves rimmed with thorns and succulent hearts hold all the wisdom of the world, a world without urgency, without tricks or technology, a world of utmost patience. And when the agave sap finally runs through our veins, we are overcomed by a sense of wisdom, and eternity. 🌿

This handsome young man is my baby Newphew, well, he’s five now, so no longer a baby. I must of taken these photos when he was around three I think, I’m terrible with ages, and the only reason I brought up the fact that I’ll be turning thirty this year, is because it’s been something I’ve wished for as of nineteen. I was in deep depression due to my divorce and was living with my parents again, circa 2009. Then, this little guy was born. He was so chunky when he was born, I nicknamed him Chunk. He brought so much joy into my life, helping me cope with my depression. On Sunday mornings we’d watch movies, then I’d snap a few photos of him eating and doing baby stuff. I ended up accumulating thousands of photos in the years I was with him. It was also around this time I pushed myself to get back into film photography and Chunk made a perfect model. He’s no longer chunky, he’s actually quite tall and lanky, like his Dad. When he visits my Mom’s house, he calls me leaving a voicemail letting me know that Grandma needs help ‘cause the Netflix isn’t working. But most of the time he calls to ask what I’m doing. 🌿
