Daredevil #595 by Marvel comics. Written by Charles Soule, art by Stefano Landini

Marvel Legacy rolls on and it’s as you were with Daredevil. Matt Murdock returns from China to find Kingpin is now mayor of New York. How could this have happened? How could the public vote for this well know criminal. Well if you have read the Matthew Rosenberg Kingpin series and parts of the Secret Empire tie-ins the seeds for his rise to power were laid there.
To make matters worse Matt Murdock, in his lawyer guise has been assigned to bring down masked heroes by the mayors office. This comes not long after the creation of an act to protect heroes from revealing their identities in court. An act DD help create. Clearly the Kingpin is behind this. It’s a classic clash of the titans but with a new twist. The Kingpin has been elected to power to serve the people and as he points out to DD, he was chosen to help and not him. What’s a blind ninja to do?
This may not be the best Marvel book around but I certainly enjoy it each time I read it. It does have a classic feel to it as these two adversaries go face to face once again. It’s not anything new but I found it an enjoyable read. Really that’s all I want.

Moon Knight #188 by Marvel Comics. Written by Max Bemis, art by Jacen Burrows.

It’s been a few months since the Lemire/ Smallwood Moon Knight run ended and I’m glad we’ve had time to digest that series before a new one launched. That series was amazing so this one has a lot to live up to. But it would be unfair to put that sort of pressure on this new creative team. You can not expect the same thing again so I went into this with an open mind.
You know what? It wasn’t bad. It didn’t feel like a Marvel book. It gave off a very independent book vibe. It’s focus wasn’t on Moon Knight but a Doctor who is analysing a patient with a very similar backstory to Moony. There’s a lot of internal monologing going on which mostly acts as set for this new villain and I’m on board. This was a solid first issue but I can see this book dividing opinion. Moon Knight hardly appears in this book and when he does it’s in dream sequence. I think that will annoy a few fans but not this guy. If it keeps going like that for a few issues than it’ll be an issue but for now I’m happy to be reading anything featuring Moon Knight again.

Mr Miracle #4 by DC comics. Written by Tom King, art by Mitch Gerards.
-
-
I’m starting to think Tom King is the new Grant Morrison. Now hear out before you throw your nerd rage at me. Morrison is a writer who pushes the medium to its maximum, someone who explores the core concepts of a character that have made them endure. And also his books can be super confusing. That is exactly what I think Tom King is doing with this book.
Mr Miracle is a book that will leave you thinking ‘what the hell just happened??’ But you also feel that you’ve read something special. I adored this issue. Absolutely everything about it I loved. The colours, the structure of the story, the 9 panel grid that never changes. This is a comic book of the highest order. Mitch Gerads art is masterful and really grounds this tale of gods on Earth. The trial of Mr Miracle was one of the most captivating and compelling pieces of work I have read in a long time. I’m aware I haven’t discussed the actual plot much but that’s because I need to go back and re-read this to digest what has happened. This is a denser book than I thought it would be and I’m so glad I have a story I can pour over every detail to try and understand the deeper meaning of this tale. For me, this is one of the issues of the year.

Justice League #32 by DC comics. Written by Paul Venditti, art by Liam Sharp.

-
When I read a comic like Justice League I have a certain expectation. I expect balls to the wall entertainment that excites me and doesn't really require me to think too much. I basically want Michael Bay to make JL comics. Having said that I am not a fan of his Transformer movies. Those are just awful. I'm not completely brain dead, I still want the story to be coherent.
Now when it comes to comics, coherent is all in the eye of the beholder. This story makes sense to me but if you're new to comics, good luck figuring out what's going on. This issue is a tie-in to the Dark Nights Metal event that is happening with Batman. The Dark Batmen (and woman) take on the Justice League one on one and it's a really fun read. I think Liam Sharp outdoes himself here, I really loved the art. But whoever chose the text for the Red Death needs to be shot (not literally) that was so hard to read. This issue probably stood out to me because recently this book has been so poor and that really breaks my heart. I believe, hopefully one day soon that Justice League will be a must read comic. Please!!!

The Hard Place #3 by Image comics. Story by Doug Wagner, art by Nic Rummel.

-
This comic itches my rev head itch. I am in no way a car expert but I appreciate our four wheeled friends. This is a classic tale of a former criminal trying to change his ways only to find his past dragging him back. One my fav films this year was Baby Driver and there are some similar story aspects in this book. Mainly an amazing heist driver with a heart of gold.
At the start I wasn't really on board with the art by Nic Rummel but with each passing issue I'm liking it more and more. The colours by Charlie Kirchoff really help make this book stand out, it's a simple colour pallet but used in a really effective way. I'm enjoying this book more than I thought I would and that is mainly down to the writing by Wagner. He is a writer whose work I have enjoyed in the past (Plastic, Batman) so I was always going to check this book out. If you're a fan of heist/ urban gang stories than I think you'll find this book to your liking. -

Batman - The Dark Prince Charming #1 by DC comics. Story & art by Enrico Marini.
-
-
You know what character doesn't have enough stories? Batman. Italian artist Enrico Marini gives us his take on the Dark Knight. This is an elseworld story that is told out of continuity as Batman hunts down the Joker who has abducted his supposed daughter.
The best thing about this book is undoubtedly the art. Obviously it's a very European style and it lends itself so well to the Batman world. I'm not sure I'm a fan of his Joker design. It's a little too cartoonish for me. It looks like someone doing Joker cosplay.
I've read so many Batman stories in my life that any new take on the character really has to do something special to stand out. Unfortunately I don't think this does that. It's a fine enough tale but it does nothing new to me. It just reads like fan fiction and I guess that's what this really is. An artist who has always had a fascination with this character and wanted to complete a life's ambition to draw Batman. In that regard it's a success but there's nothing new here for me.

Captain America #695 by Marvel comics. Written by Mark Waid, art by Chris Samnee.
-
-
For the longest time Superman was seen as the big blue Boy Scout. A character who embodied the best ideals of being American. Standing for truth, justice and stuff like that. But over time, I feel that perception has shifted to Captain America. The movie portrayals of these respected characters have certainly contributed to that. Chris Evans has done a great job in helping elevate Caps image in the public eye. Before the movies I never really rated Capt as a character. Now I love the bloke.
The Waid/ Samnee creative combination have done a great job with Daredevil & Black Widow in the past and now start their latest project. This issue picks up after the events of Secret Empire as Capt sets about re-earning the publics trust. This was a story that had such a classic feel to it. Just Capt doing what's right and standing up for those who can't defend themselves. A timeless tale with some beautiful art by Chris Samnee. His style is so timeless. This is a Marvel legacy book that everyone should check out. A really good re-introduction to this all round hero. -

Hi-Fi Fight Club #3 by Boom! Box. **Review Below**
Written Carly Usdin, art by Nina Vakueva.

From a 90s nostalgic point of view this is a great comic. It taps into that retro vibe that Paper Girls does so well with the 80s. The nostalgia mainly comes from the music references that instantly transport me back to the HMV (are they still around?) shops where I grew up as I listened to the latest releases. But this comic is about more than just music. It's about the relationship between these young women who have formed a sort of detective fight club and investigate the mystery of missing/brain washed bands.
At the moment this mystery is mostly in the background as we get to know our main character Chris. She's new to this group and is our gateway character into this world. This is a fun book with an almost anime-esc art style which I'm all about. I haven't even mentioned that this book features mostly women which in this day and age shouldn't be amazing but unfortunately it is a rare occurrence in comics. You could view this as a girl power book but everyone can enjoy this. I didn't even think about the predominately female cast till I went back selecting screen shots.
This is a really enjoyable book which has a wider appeal than people may give it credit. I just hope the story starts to move a bit quicker now. These first three issues have mostly been set up and I'm ready to see these ladies in action.

Thanos #12 by Marvel comics. Written by Jeff Lemire, art by Germán Peralta.
-
-
Whenever I see Jeff Lemire's name attached to a book I immediately think 'quality'. But this book broke that rule. Look, this is in no way a bad book. The art is absolutely fantastic and the story is interesting enough. It's just that Lemire's recent work (Royal City, Black Hammer and Moon Knight) have set a very high standard that series doesn't quite lives up to. I guess we've all got bills to pay so you take work whenever it's offered to you. Maybe that's a bit harsh.
Thanos faces off against his son Thane who, with the power of the Phoenix feels he can take his dad down. But the fates have other ideas. By the end of this issue the statues quo is reset and Thanos is back to his all powerful self. It's been a fun journey to see the mad titan brought down a peg or two but by the end he's the same person he always was. I'm not sure if we learnt anything new about Thanos. This probably won't go down as a classic but it was a fun enough read.

Batman - The Merciless #1 by DC comics. Written by Peter J. Tomasi, art by Francis Manapul.
-
-
The latest Dark Nights one-shot focuses on Batman with the powers of Wonder Woman. Or more accurately the powers of Ares who is WW's brother, so you know it's sorta the same. Whatever. Anywhoo the Batman of this universe gets pissed when WW dies while battling Ares, Batman picks up a magic helmet and whala! One Merciless Batman.
I enjoyed the first two Metal one-shots but they've steadily become less interesting. The Drowned was particularly dull but I think this may be slightly better? Or not? I'm undecided. This issue basically tells us this Batman is all about war, he has been stripped of his moral code and now lives for battle. Sounds more like the god of war than the princess of the amazons. The other one-shots really made you feel that certain Batman had absorbed a particular Justice League members powers. But this issue really doesn't nail the Batman/ Wonder Woman connection. He does mention Diana's name a lot and says he misses her but so what? And what exactly does the smiling Batman do apart from look like a Lord of the Rings character?
This may sound like I disliked this issue but that's not true. One real highlight was the art by Francis Manapul. Always great to see his art. Overall not the strongest tie in but an easy read with some nice visuals. I guess that's enough.
