Oh man I get pumped whenever this comic comes out. It's been a frustrating release schedule but deep down I'm happy to wait for a comic that is this good. People have recently praised Stranger Things for capturing that 80s vibe and I think this comic does it as just as well. The panel layouts and character designs instantly transported me into that time period. This is such a beautiful book to read.
In terms of plot we are finally getting closer to our titular heroes walking into the bank. Our main girl, Paige is determined to save her father from making a huge mistake. The relationship between her and her father is so well developed and presented that you really care for these characters. It burns me that I can't own the physical copies of this comic as I've loved the look of every issue that's come out so far. This will be a great trade to get once its released. I know I'll have to wait a while for the next issue (Rosenberg is killing it over at Marvel) but if they keep this quality up it's well worth the wait.

Batman #23 by DC comics. Written by Tom King, art by Mitch Gerads.

This is easily the best work Tom King has done since he took over Batman. In this issue the Dark Knight teams up with Swamp Thing, one of my favourite comic book characters. It's a great partnership between two characters who couldn't be more different. One is grounded in his powers while the other has seemingly unlimited abilities. Their union is instigated by the death of Swamp Things father. This leads to some amazing interactions between the protector of the Green and Batman. Tom King's simple dialogue between the two is so genius. There are some really funny moments and some brutally emotional ones. I would be amiss if I didn't mention Mitch Gerads art. It is beautiful. This guy knows how to draw Swamp Thing. Everything about this issue is a ten. It's a fantastic one-shot issue and a great pallet cleaner after the Button event. If you've not been a fan of Tom King's Batman I reckon this is the issue that will convert you.

Black Bolt #1 by Marvel comics. Written by Saladin Ahmed, art by Christian Ward.

I've never been a fan of the Inhumans. I know all about them as a group and their backstories but for whatever reason I just can't read a story featuring them month to month. There must be some good Inhuman stories out there, I just haven't found them yet.
But I think Black Bolt may be the point where I jump on board the Inhuman train. Black Bolt is the former king of the Inhumans and for whatever reason he is currently incarcerated and far from home. Why is he in prison? That's a mystery yet to be solved but he is free of his shackles and makes his way through the prison defeating challenges as they come.
I really liked this issue, the art by Christian Ward is outstanding. I couldn't find who did the colours in this issue but they also deserve a lot of praise. Black Bolt is a fascinating character and has such a cool look. Marvel have really tried to push the Inhumans on readers with little success. It's all come across as a bit forced. However with the Inhumans are about to feature in their own TV show so we're getting a second wave of titles featuring these characters. Black Bolt is a solid start, here's hoping it continues to get stronger.

Eternal Empire #1 by Image Comics. Written by Sarah Vaughn & Jonathan Luna (also on art).

More maps in comics! This was a great first issue. If you're a fan of Game of Thrones I think this book will be right but your alley. We are thrown into a world that is ruled by an unseen Empress who is expanding her empire. Is she a cruel ruler? We assume so by the way her soldiers treat the workers. One worker, a 'snow hair' has been having visions that is unsure of their meaning. All she knows is she's had enough of being a worker and sets off hoping the sun will guide her. Her journey across the lands is beautifully captured by Jonathan Luna. He has such a simple but amazing art style.
Luna and Sarah Vaughn have done a great job of establishing this world so quickly but at the same time not giving too much away. It's a master class in how to write a first issue. This has been my favourite comic this week so far.
I hope this series is as good as their other series 'Alex+Ada' (which I need to finish) and 'Girls' which is one of favourite series ever. -
