The destruction of the rainforest in Borneo has been called the biggest environmental crime of our time.
We just spoke to Erik Pauser, the director of The Borneo Case, about his new film that will be screened at the Swedish Human Rights Film Festival in Lund this weekend. We wanted to give you a teaser of what’s to come.
In The Borneo Case, the filmmakers spend five years intimately following the trail of an unlikely group of activists whose aim is to investigate how profits from the illegal logging that has annihilated more than 90% of the Malaysian Borneo Rainforest, have been money laundered into property portfolios all around the world.
Pauser says that he was surprised to learn that Scandinavian banks were among the banks funding industrial developments responsible for deforestation and violence in the rainforests of Borneo. This was also brought up in a recent report by the non-profit group Swedwatch.
Despite the grim details of The Borneo Case, the ending does surprise many viewers. “We were working on the film for five years and really didn’t know how it was going to end,” he says. He says the incredibly hard work of many of the activists featured in the film resulted in an ending they never could have expected.
Erik will be joined in Lund by Mutang Urud, an activist and one of the stars in the film. Book your tickets now! http://kino.nu/the-borneo-case

Our staff of litigators and activists in every state, thousands of volunteers, and millions of supporters stand ready to fight against any encroachment on our cherished freedoms and rights.” ACLU letter to Trump after the election.

Just a few days out from screening the critically acclaimed Ma’ Rosa in Stockholm and Lund at the first Swedish Human Rights Film Festival, we sat down to talk to Steffen Jensen who’ll participate in a Q&A after the screening of Ma’ Rosa on April 1 in Lund. He’s a Professor in the Department of Culture and Global Studies at Aalborg University and a Senior Project Researcher at the Danish Institute Against Torture (DIGNITY). “It is a truly bewildering sets of events set in motion by the national elections. The election of Duterte has produced the expected results of violence in terms of extrajudicial killings, carried on from his time as mayor in Davao where he lorded over a brutal regime of killings against those described as drug dealers….” Don't miss it!
