Today is a day dedicated to my favourite animal. It's World Elephant Day! This day is dedicated to the preservation and protection of this beautiful animal. Around the world elephants are slaughtered for their ivory tusks, or being ill-treated working for tourists. We need to change that, people!
I took this picture in Sri Lanka, back in 2015. This female elephant lives at Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage, which is an orphanage for elephants. The orphanage was founded to care and protect the many orphaned unweaned wild elephants found wandering in and near the forests of Sri Lanka. It was established in 1975 by the Sri Lanka Department of Wildlife Conservation. The Orphanage has been a little controversial in the past. The orphanage also breeds the elephants and has donated elephants to temples. Temple elephants are venerated by many, but generally don't live a happy life, as they're held captive and stand in the same place for long hours. Isn't it interesting though that these animals are venerated by many, but don't get the good life and treatment that venerated beings should get. The elephants that live at the orphanage are well taken care of though. This isn't a post to bash the orphanage, they're doing good work. But I think it is important to raise awareness about the treatment of elephants that work for humans, and for the protection of elephants worldwide.
