Welp. I WAS about to go to bed a little after 11 then I heard @therealswizzz and @justblaze were doing a LIVE IG battle and well, damn near 2.5 hours later here I am extra hyped and making mad Swizz and Blaze-produced playlists on my phone 😩😩😩😩 Did any of you watch it? It was πŸ”₯πŸ”₯πŸ”₯

Speaking of being hyped AF for spring, this lip look from the @chanelofficial Spring 2017 RTW show has me digging in my stash for all of my bright pink glossy lip colors πŸ™ŒπŸΏ Also, loving this Fresh Prince of Bel-Air/Cher Horowitz from Clueless mash-up in the collection 😝 I've been pinning my spring inspo & more over on Pinterest---I'm @stylenbeautydoc there, too! That 63 degree weather we got today in NYC has me HYPED for spring (this is a pic from last September---today I wore a lumberjack-chic casual outfit...lol) I'm already plotting on ways to revamp this short sleeve trench I bought on SUPER sale at @monki when I was in Stockholm last summer. I also picked up the latest @stylewatchmag for fashion inspo, started a Spring 2017 fashion board on Pinterest, and I'm just over here hyped AF for spring fashions πŸ˜‚ (or maybe I had one too many cups of coffee today πŸ˜…) Who else is ready for spring? What are you looking forward to wearing? πŸ“Έ @nasilelephotography

You guys loved the immigration stories I shared earlier about my family so I figured I'd share one more. This man is one of the most important immigrants in my life. I'm gonna try not to cry while I type this (haha---like you guys can see or hear me crying πŸ˜πŸ˜‚). So this is my Granddad---my mom's dad. He was born in Barbados, moved to Trinidad, and then eventually immigrated to America in the 60s. He was integral in helping my mom and then ultimately my aunt and my cousins immigrate here. I could be here all day telling you how amazing this man was in my life but here's a few: when I was like maybe 8 he called the house while my mom was out running errands (you could leave an 8 year old in the house back in those days---especially since we lived in a "it takes a village" kind of neighborhood) to check on me. My greedy behind told him I was hungry---not even thinking anything of it just because I was a kid and a brat and hungry. He lived like 20-30 mins away yet showed up with a 2-piece meal from KFC for me shortly after...lol. He was VERY hardworking---always had several jobs and I remember he always smelled like money when I was a kid. He was so used to working and providing that even when he had to get his leg amputated and I would visit him either at the nursing home or at his apartment he was still talking about getting a job. He also wasn't one for long visits. Once he was done with you he'd be like ✌🏿 it was all out of love though...lol. He died in 2006 (on Good Friday---I joke that he was secretly Jesus) and we miss him so much. Sometimes my mom still gets sad about him not being here---she says he was the best father anyone could wish for and that anytime she felt down he would cheer her up immediately. #daywithoutimmigrants #immigrants #adaywithoutimmigrants

My immigrant parents on their wedding day in NYC May 1970 (see my previous post). They divorced when I was a kid in the early 80s (I like to say it's because once I was born, they fought over loving me the most and that made my older sisters feel bad πŸ˜©πŸ˜‚). My dad was always around though---teaching me how to ride my bike, tried to teach me how to drive but that didn't work out well so I wound up in driver's ed...lol, made all the rounds with me when I went to buy my most recent and previous cars to make sure the dealership didn't try to pull one over on me and would come collect me from the side of the road every time my old Altima would break down 😩 Today he'll rush over to put together random IKEA furniture for me or to catch a random mouse (hey, it's NYC 😩) and would always be my designated driver every time I needed a ride to the airport. OMG---when I first started blogging full time, I didn't really explain to my dad what I did---all he knew was that I wasn't working at the bank anymore. Anyway, I started to travel A LOT thanks to the blog so he'd take me to the airport and ask me where I was going. In the early days it seemed like random US cities, then places like Poland, Colombia, Germany---so after awhile my dad was like "WAIT---what do you do?!?!" πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚ He still probably doesn't understand what I do but knows that I no longer ask to borrow money...lol. My dad is an old school Caribbean dad---doesn't believe in buying anything new if the old stuff can be reshined or patched up a gazillion times, everything he owns is immaculate and every time I get in his car he's playing Lord Kitchener or Sparrow πŸ‡ΉπŸ‡Ή #daywithoutimmigrants #immigrants #trinidad #parents #adaywithoutimmigrants

My momma. NYC, July 1966. Just two months earlier she had arrived in America from Trinidad to study Business Administration. She still has the trophy she won in 1967 for being the best transcriptionist (she won over candidates in both the US and England). She went back to Trinidad (she was here on a visa, I think---I gotta get her to tell her story on video---she told me but I forget some of the details...lol) and then when she was able to get permanent residence she came back with my dad who was also an immigrant from Trinidad. They got married in 1970, had my older sisters in '71 and '74, my dad served in the army, and at the time my mom worked as a secretary at @time magazine in their advertising department. My parents worked hard to put their three girls through Catholic school (K-12) and college. I remember when she was studying to take the citizenship test when I was a kid---I would quiz her on things because I had learned about them in school but she knew more about US history than I did...lol. There are millions of stories like this about people starting new lives for themselves and their families by coming to this country---it's basically what this country was built on (well that and the blood, sweat, and tears of slaves but that's another post ✊🏿). It amazes me that we have to remind some folks about this---folks who seem to have forgotten history (oh, it's YOUR country? Please tell me which Native tribe you belong to πŸ€”) and are blinded by over generalized instances and also flat out lies. Side note: I love how my mama was taking #alphet pics more than 40 years before Instagram launched πŸ˜‚#daywithoutimmigrants #immigrants #trinidad #nyc #adaywithoutimmigrants
