How do you handle situations when you feel as though you’ve been disrespected?
I used to be far more impulsive in these instances, abrupt and reactive. But, as I’ve gotten older I’ve learned to think intentionally when confronted in this way. I stop, walk away, and think it through first. I make sure I’m not overreacting. I want to see both sides of it, to understand why someone may be choosing to act this way. Only then can I determine how to react, which is the only thing I can control. ⠀⠀
What I’ve found is that often a lack of respect is the result of selfish behaviour. It’s a defensive impulse. It’s often undeserved and not a reflection on you.
As I see it, disrespect of this nature is a missed opportunity to understand and connect. A lost chance to celebrate our commonalities. There’s no need to be threatened, jump to jealously, or act competitively. Ironically in acting selfishly you’re doing the most damage to yourself. ⠀⠀
We have to instead choose to lift one another up and act with integrity. Happiness and growth cannot thrive in solitude, they are cultivated by our relationships and interactions with others.
Thank you to @cayortiz for inspiring this post with her beautiful words that always make me think. ⠀⠀
