Starting a personal project that I've been wanting to for years! I'm extremely excited about this project! I will be documenting every step, however I won't be doing it full time, so progress will be slow. I will intersperse progress photos with my usual work. Many thanks to @aubrey.k.alexander for sending me the patterns for this #cellobuild It all starts with a good pattern and a mould which is shown in the second picture as the humble beginning of a glue up. On a personal note, I'm extremely passionate about playing the cello, I try to practice at least an hour a day and I play in different small chamber music settings including some small string orchestras. I can't wait to be able to play a cello that I built!

I enjoyed spending some time with Jarred @chessmenforge today. It's great to see young people so interested in craft. At just 18, Jarred has taught himself so much in just one year of blacksmithing, he even recently taught himself how to hand engrave metal. We spent most of the day in the shop where I showed him some woodworking techniques and he helped with some shop stuff. Afterwards we went out and did a little smithing. Here he is making one of his steak turners with a double twist. .

Sometimes you never know what you'll find in the stack! This is 8/4 Sapele 29" wide and 11ft long! The board to the left is just a bit narrower but clearly a match. If you need a conference table that would be over 50" wide and 11 ft long please give me a shout. Or if your in Texas and you need some wide wood, leave a comment or send me a message! .

Here's an up close picture of the base of the hay rake table. The timber was fairly thick and reminded me more of timber framing! All the joinery is mortise and tenon and drawbored with oak pegs. I left the pegs sticking proud ever so slightly. The end tenon is wedged and protrudes with a gentle chamfer all around. The wood is Texas Pecan supplied by @berdollsawmill .

Here's a couple pictures of a hayrake table I built a while back using native Texas Pecan from @berdollsawmill The top is 44" wide and 8 ft long and made from two slabs. Nancy @nrhiller reminded me of this piece when she posted plans for one that's she's fixing to build. In my next post I'll show some close ups of the joinery which was all drawbored mortise and tenon construction with the shoulders scribe fit. The joinery was challenging on this project as well as getting all the mortise and tenons to fit, its like a big puzzle! .

For #woodshavingwednesday I've got a sort of complicated post, first off I've got some beautiful shavings from Sapele wood. Today I start by rebuilding some exterior entryway doors that were on their last leg 😉pictured on the left is one of the rotten door stiles! The wood was originally a soft wood and even though the door was painted it did not withstand the test of the weather. The new doors will still be painted but by using high grade hardwood, I hope they will last much longer!

So here's my first quick attempt at the ancient Scandinavian art of kolrosing. I need to work more on my leaf drawing, these were just some quick freehand sketches I put down. In the other pictures you'll see, I ground up some coffee grinds with a mortar and pestle and pressed them into the incised lines. I just used the point of my mora knife to create the incision. What's funny is I haven't been consciously aware of this art form until I saw some spoons at #handworks2017 and then ever since then I've seen multiple posts on the subject with some great artists doing some beautiful work. Check out @tythornock work and his book too. Give this a try, it's a very efficient way to embellish your work and enjoyable as well! Also wishing that I was at Greenwood Fest this weekend!

Have handplane, will travel! Today I spent the day on a large ranch in Gillespie county Texas flattening the top of a Roubo bench that this gentleman built several years ago. I also gave him some instruction on sharpening and fixed his leg vise to work smoothly. I was reminded on how far @benchcrafted has come with improvements on their leg vise. This one was the old style with a pin to keep the leg vise from racking as well as the single wheel knob!

It fit! There's no glue in there yet, there are a few gaps that will hopefully disappear after I glue with hide glue. More to follow but I've got to get back to real work for the day! .

Chiseling out the waste, this was the hard part! Used a 1/16" chisel primarily with the help of a few others... stay tuned! .

A Sunday afternoon challenge... Mini needlepoint halfblind houndstooth dovetails. That sure was a mouthful, anyway I hope there's more to follow unless it's a total flop! .

Here's a detail up close shot of one of the corner fans in the desk I just delivered. All the curly maple veneer was sawn in the shop. The banding is 1/2" wide and about 3/32" thick. The fan's edges are shaded by dipping them in hot sand to create a 3- dimensional look. The black wood is dyed wood. There's also a very thin (1/32") band of curly maple outlining the black scallops. (Please excuse the little white particles of dust in the picture!)
