Pres. Trump hands coal miners the pen he used to sign a bill eliminating regulations on the mining industry in the Roosevelt Room at the White House in Washington, D.C., on February 16, 2017. The legislation puts the brakes on regulation blocking coal mining debris from being dumped into nearby streams. "In eliminating this rule, I am continuing to keep my promise to the American people to get rid of wasteful regulations that do absolutely nothing but slow down the economy." Happy 199th Birthday, Frederick Douglass! While his exact birthdate is unknown, @frederickdouglassnps will celebrate the slave-turned-abolitionist on Friday.
#FrederickDouglass received some attention earlier this month when President Donald Trump praised him at a gathering to kick off Black History Month.
"Frederick Douglass is an example of somebody who has done an amazing job and is being recognized more and more, I notice," he said. The president's comments drew immediate backlash from critics who perceived it as a reference to a still-living Douglass. Douglass, who died in 1895, was one of the country's most influential and celebrated African-Americans.
In honor of #BlackHistoryMonth, we are looking back at key moments in African-American history.
