Today is RUOK? Day - the national day of action and a reminder to everyone that you’ve got what it takes to have a life-changing conversation.
Suicide is the leading cause of death in Australians aged between 15-44. More than 200 Australians attempt suicide each day, and about eight will die every single day. On top of that, three million Australians are living with anxiety or depression.
Suicide and depression know no boundaries. They don’t discriminate. People you know and people you are close to might be suffering in silence.
So today is about asking family members, friends and workmates if they are okay. It’s about listening and being there. And if someone needs help, it’s about taking that step.
If you’re overwhelmed or feel like your world is closing in, there are people you can call. Lifeline has a 24 hour crisis support line. You can call 13 11 14 any time of the day and talk to someone.
Another organisation doing great work is Beyond Blue. You can speak confidentially and for free with a beyondblue counsellor, 24/7 on 1300 22 4636. They also have a webchat available from 3pm to midnight every day at www.beyondblue.org.au/getsuppor).
Today is about keeping an eye out for mates, family and colleagues who are struggling. Be kind to each other. Be there for them today. And for every other day.
