Still can't get over the beaches, mountains, culture, throwback/old school everything, architecture etc. I saw in Muscat. Need to go back and spend time in the mountains and desert! 🙏🇴🇲☀️⛰🏝🐫 (ps please spare me the lectures and further "manaplaining" -- which actually makes you more of a judgmental, short-sighted hypocrite than anyone else -- on any of these countries human rights' issues/treatment of women/workers. I didn't go there to judge and proclaim western society and democracy as superior (because what right do I have? Or any westerner?), but to have an educational and cultural experience and understand the Emirati and the Omani etc. We all have our flaws --need I begin with the Western world's very long list of crimes to humanity, mistakes of the past, deaths resulting in thousands of innocent civilians? We still have work on that front. Notice how all your clothes and many of the things you buy from Target are from Asia? Also: sweatshops still exist in America! I've seen them in NYC when I worked in the fashion biz.
I'm Chinese-American and many of my ancestors who weren't able to flee Communist China when Mao rose to power in 1949 ended up dying of starvation during the horrors of the cultural revolution. (Mao killed more people than Stalin and Hitler combined.) My parents and grandparents experienced so much terror and pain that they could not even repeat most these memories because the very thought of them were all too terrifying to relive and rehash. China still commits awful human rights crimes, disregard for the environment, lack of freedom of the press etc. I mean, the list goes on, and while these horrify me, I am still proud of China's rich history and heritage pre-Mao. No need to wallow in self-loathing. No culture and society is perfect. Trust me, sexism and racism are alive and well in the western world today! Ok, that's all. Tired of all the mansplaining...when really, the more we learn about other cultures, the better equipped we are to work together and perhaps use soft power to influence change/progress in human rights.
