Happy International Women’s Day! 🤟🏿🤟🏼🤟🏽🤟🏾🤟🏻🤟 .
Here is a piece I made last year, inspired by some old Korean shaman (mudang/priestess) stories. Shamans in Korea, and maybe in some other cultures as well, have been one of the most oppressed, isolated and denounced groups in modern history. Yet they are healers, somewhere to turn to when people feel like they’re at their wits end and would like some help from the universe. I thought this felt a lot like our mothers and women in many cultures, who had to endure so much for others - here’s to you all amazing, inspiring, vulnerable, strong ladies! .
This piece is titled “Tiger Whiskers”, because of the hat depicted has tiger whiskers as decorative adornment. In old Korean tradition, having some tiger’s whiskers was believed to impart some courage and protection to the bearer. (But poor tigers) .
