The SPCA has always advocated for sterilisation as the most effective and humane method to manage street dog and cat populations, and we have been performing and funding these surgeries for decades. Many other groups and individuals have also joined in this effort. However, what the animal welfare groups have never managed to do, due to resource constraints, is run a national concerted sterilisation programme for dogs.

This nationwide Trap-Neuter-Release-Manage (TNRM) effort, led by the AVA and supported by many animal welfare groups, will be a game changer for street dogs in Singapore and will save countless lives.

We are very pleased to see so many stakeholders, including the government, welfare groups and veterinarians, coming together with a shared vision and approach to humanely reduce the street dog population in Singapore.

The SPCA thanks Minister Desmond Lee and the AVA for making this happen. We look forward to working together with all stakeholders to make this programme a success and help save lives.

ADOPTION SPOTLIGHT - ARIEL

This is Ariel, a local male black kitten, who was brought to the SPCA in October as the finder noticed that Ariel was unlike other kittens – he was seen dragging himself most of the time.

Ariel was then seen by our consultant veterinarian who observed that his hind legs were weak and splayed. A special bandaging technique was applied, to correct his gait. He was monitored a week later and his stance seemed to improve.

As Ariel required special care, we reached out to Dr Tai Yesun of Nam Sang Veterinary Clinic (http://namsangveterinaryclinic.webs.com/), to help us. Dr Tai administered Traditional Chinese Veterinary Medicine (TCVM) treatments on Ariel, to strengthen his hinds.

After Dr Tai fostered and treated Ariel for almost two months, he is now able to use his hind legs to support himself. Ariel behaves just like any other cat. He is playful, affectionate and is able to jump as well as climb. He is now looking for a forever home. Potential adopters must be committed to bringing Ariel for periodic treatments, to maintain his quality of life. Video of Ariel in link in bio.
A very big thank you to Dr Tai for her time and sacrifice.

If you are interested in adopting Ariel, please drop an email to express your interest, as well as experience in caring for kittens and/or cats to enquiries@spca.org.sg

Alternatively, if you are able to foster special needs animals such as Ariel, please do consider joining our foster parent programme at http://spca.org.sg/helpus_fosterparent.asp

Working together, we can make a difference and save lives.

A BIG THANK YOU

The Tux for Tails Inaugural Gala event would not have been a success without your support.

We thank you for assisting us in getting closer to our goal of being able to treat needy animals with more serious medical conditions in-house, to provide better diagnostics as well as management of these conditions and to increase our capacity for sterilisation surgeries.

We cannot further agree with Home Affairs and Law Minister K. Shanmugam, who in his speech said: "How we treat animals in our society is really a reflection of who we are and what we are as a society." Article in link in bio.

We would also like to extend our appreciation to the Tux for Tails Gala Committee, for believing in our dreams and for working together with us, to achieve them.

Our gratitude to the media as well, for covering the event.

We now look forward to upgrading our community animal clinic in 2018, and enhancing our ability to promote health and save lives.

Thank you all.

SPCA PHONE LINES PARTIALLY RESTORED

A lightning strike on the evening of 25 Nov damaged our phone lines. We have been working to restore them as quickly as we can. So far, our lines have only been partially restored.

You can call our hotline 6287 5355 for emergencies but please do bear with us if we take longer than usual to attend to your call.

Thank you all for your patience and understanding.

ADOPTION SPOTLIGHT - KITTY

This is Kitty, a male, Tabby of about 1.5 months old.
Kitty was found inside a three metre deep drain in October.
His cries for help alerted a concerned member of the public, who dialed our 24-hour hotline 6287 5355 ext 9 for assistance.

Kitty was rescued and seen by our consultant vet. He was hungry and tired but otherwise fine.

As he was only about three weeks old then, he was under the care of one of our fosterers.

Kitty may appear to be shy initially but he warms up. Like most kittens, he loves to play. (Video link in bio). If you are interested in adopting Kitty and already have your apartment meshed up, do drop us an email with your interest and experience to enquiries@spca.org.sg

We require potential adopters to mesh up their windows and gate, to prevent the kitten/cat from slipping out of the unit and/or falling out of the windows. Cats and kittens are curious animals and they risk falling out of an open window by simple acts such as chasing a bird that was flying past.

A pet is a lifetime commitment.

PUPPY WITH MAGGOT WOUND

Zeus was about three weeks old when he rescued at Sungei Gedong Road on 3 October.

We brought Zeus back to the SPCA where he was examined by our vet and found with a huge maggot wound, about 4 cm with fibrosis, on the right side of his abdominal wall. Much time was spent removing the maggots and flushing the wound on a daily basis to ensure no foreign matter and dead tissue remained in the open wound.

Staff took turns to monitor him regularly to ensure that he did not go into shock after the removal of the wound. We also had to ensure he was eating and drinking well, and not vomiting. Zeus’s toileting was also monitored closely throughout his recovery process. (Video link in bio)

He is currently under foster care and will soon be ready for adoption and if you would like to provide him with a forever home, please get in touch with us at enquiries@spca.org.sg

Zeus is just one of our many residents that require intensive medical care and attention.
We hope that with the increase in the capacity of our clinic in the near future, by recruiting additional veterinary staff and installing additional housing units in our animal recovery rooms, these moves will allow us to provide quality healthcare to more animals in need.

We look forward to your support at our Tux for Tails benefit gala dinner on Saturday, 2 December at The St Regis Singapore.

FRIENDS FOR LIFE 2018 CALENDAR

It’s that time of the year, to look for Christmas gifts, so we hope you'll consider purchasing our 2018 calendar, which makes an ideal present for friends and loved ones.

The animals featured all have their own unique stories; victims of neglect, abandoned or injured. They were rescued and treated with loving care, nursed back to health, and most have already found their loving forever homes. This would not have been possible without the efforts of those kind souls who alerted us of their predicament in the first place.

The animals are featured alongside watercolour sketches of flora by one of our volunteers, Reis.

We are now taking pre-orders for the calendars which will be available from 15 November onwards.

Each calendar retails at $10.

To pre-order, please click onto the link in bio.

On behalf of the animals at SPCA, we thank you for your support and wish you a great year ahead in 2018.
