Thoughts on Viswasam(no spoilers) : Right from it’s trailer, the makers of Viswasam had made it clear on what kind of film Viswasam is - a regular commercial entertainer. That is not necessarily a bad thing as a good screenplay can do wonders for a film.
The first half of Viswasam is fun, colourful and mostly light hearted. In the second half though, the movie finds it’s true purpose as emotions come into play. Viswasam flows smoothly with few lags.It is not a sophisticated film but has enough substance to keep you entertained throughout. It even manages to convey a neat message in the end. Comedy was a constant in the film with Robo Shankar, Yogi Babu, Vivek and Kovai Sarala taking care of it. Thankfully, Thambi Ramaiyah was less annoying than usual. Jagapathi Babu initially appeared to be the typical cardboard corporate villain but director Siva made it a little different by adding another dimension to his character. He may be the villain but he has his story too and Jagapathi scores in scenes that require him to be more than just a villain.
The ravishing Nayanthara had a very substantial and crucial role to play in Viswasam. Her pairing with Ajith is lovely and she had come up with a solid performance as a strong headed & dignified woman. Her sarees with the crochet lace border and the high-neck sleeveless blouses will soon be a trend.
D Imman’s BGM was superb in both the mass and emotional scenes. The songs sounded even better when seen on screen. DOP Vetri had made Viswasam look colourful and festive. The action scenes in the toilet was well staged.
Thala Ajithkumar’s hardwork is very evident. Action, humour, romance, sentiments and emotions,he has given his best efforts once again. We even got to see him dance and was particularly good in the Adchi Thooku song. He was not just a mass hero here but had ample scope to show his acting skills. Anikha is his daughter once again after Yennai Arindhaal and that girl is a lucky charm. Their combination scenes were truly emotional and touching. Ajith was fantastic in these portions and Anikha matches up to him quite well.
Viswasam is a clean family film which can be watched by all. Go watch it!

Thoughts on Petta(no spoilers) : Karthik Subbaraj’s Petta has Superstar Rajinikanth coming to work in a college as hostel warden Kaali. Of course, that is just a facade. What is his true purpose of being there?Who really is Kaali?
Petta has an ordinary story but Karthik had spiced up the proceedings by creating plenty of whistle worthy moments for Rajinikanth, added a little suspense factor and the climax had his signature twist. The silhouette shots of Rajini, the fog that creeps upon the actors constantly, the warm colours, the building with the stained glass windows and almost everything else made Petta visually aesthetic. Cinematographer Thiru’s work is mighty impressive. Stunt master Peter Hein had composed some impactful stunt scenes for Rajini. Anirudh’s background score works perfect, upping the mass factor in several scenes. The songs are already a hit.
The movie has a strong supporting cast with most of them being known faces and they had all done a very neat job in their respective roles no matter how little it is. Sananth Reddy got lots of screen time and he has used it very aptly. Muniskanth, Aadukalam Naren and Bobby get their little moments too. The gorgeous Simran was a delight to watch. Nawazuddin looked out of place initially with the lip sync issues but as the movie progressed, he proved his fine acting abilities. Vijay Sethupathi was his usual self.
Superstar Rajinikanth. Even with all that actors around him, he simply outshined all of them effortlessly. We have never thought Rajini had lost his charm or energy in his last few releases. It has always been there, naturally. In Petta though, we witnessed Superstar Rajinikanth with extra energy, style, charisma, humour and he had scope to act as well. He was lovely to watch in the romance scenes and a terror in the action scenes. Right from the nostalgic title credits, Karthik had shown him the way his fans would love to see him. Watch it if you are a Thalaivar fan!
