Thoughts on Petta(no spoilers) : Karthik Subbaraj’s Petta has Superstar Rajinikanth coming to work in a college as hostel warden Kaali. Of course, that is just a facade. What is his true purpose of being there?Who really is Kaali?
Petta has an ordinary story but Karthik had spiced up the proceedings by creating plenty of whistle worthy moments for Rajinikanth, added a little suspense factor and the climax had his signature twist. The silhouette shots of Rajini, the fog that creeps upon the actors constantly, the warm colours, the building with the stained glass windows and almost everything else made Petta visually aesthetic. Cinematographer Thiru’s work is mighty impressive. Stunt master Peter Hein had composed some impactful stunt scenes for Rajini. Anirudh’s background score works perfect, upping the mass factor in several scenes. The songs are already a hit.
The movie has a strong supporting cast with most of them being known faces and they had all done a very neat job in their respective roles no matter how little it is. Sananth Reddy got lots of screen time and he has used it very aptly. Muniskanth, Aadukalam Naren and Bobby get their little moments too. The gorgeous Simran was a delight to watch. Nawazuddin looked out of place initially with the lip sync issues but as the movie progressed, he proved his fine acting abilities. Vijay Sethupathi was his usual self.
Superstar Rajinikanth. Even with all that actors around him, he simply outshined all of them effortlessly. We have never thought Rajini had lost his charm or energy in his last few releases. It has always been there, naturally. In Petta though, we witnessed Superstar Rajinikanth with extra energy, style, charisma, humour and he had scope to act as well. He was lovely to watch in the romance scenes and a terror in the action scenes. Right from the nostalgic title credits, Karthik had shown him the way his fans would love to see him. Watch it if you are a Thalaivar fan!
