A tour-de-force of 19th-century painting and among Sir Lawrence Alma-Tadema’s most striking compositions – depicting two beautiful patrician women lounging amongst a mountainous coast studded with Roman villas – ‘Love’s Jewelled Fetter’ was painted during an extraordinary period for the artist and the same year that he presented Spring (1894, J. Paul Getty Museum, Los Angeles) at the Royal Academy. A highlight of next week’s European Art auction in #NYC and now on view through 21 May. #sothebyseuropeanart

Born Jeanne-Antoinette Poisson, the Marquise de Pompadour was the official mistress of King Louis XV. As an arbiter of taste, she was instrumental to the development of 18th-century French painting and her influence on the King and public policy cannot be understated. Her painted portrait by François-Hubert Drouais is on offer in our 22 May Master Painting sale, and currently on view in our #NYC galleries. #SothebysMasters

Rain, rain, go away! Frederic Edwin Church’s ‘Valley of Santa Isabel, Granada’, transports is to warmer and sunnier climates. One of the artist’s first panoramic landscapes, this extraordinary painting glows from within. Now hanging in #SothebysAmerican galleries on York Avenue, the work will be offered in #NYC on 23 May.

🍾🎊👑We’re celebrating the #RoyalWedding with this exquisite “Sauterelle” Bar by François-Xavier Lalanne. Executed in 1970, this Surrealist work is one of only two examples made with luxurious Sèvres porcelain; the other was presented as a gift by President Georges Pompidou to Queen Elizabeth II and the Duke of Edinburgh in 1972, where it remains in their collection today. Emerging from a private European collection, this stunning object is at one moment a whimsical, larger-than-life sculpture of a grasshopper, and the next, its body opens to function as a bar. Swipe right for a peek inside of this highlight from our Important Design sale on 24 May in #NYC, now on view at 1334 York Avenue. Cheers! 🥂#SothebysDesign #Queen #Bar

This painting by Spanish artist Joaquín Sorolla shows the artist’s daughter Elena looking out to sea. Following the singular triumph of his first solo exhibition in Paris in June and July 1906, Sorolla spent the rest of the summer at Biarritz, the elegant seaside town on the Atlantic coast. Working all day on the beach, his output in the French resort was distinguished by small format paintings rather than large canvases. ‘Elena en la playa, Biarritz’ is a highlight of next week’s 19th Century European Paintings sale in #London and on view in our galleries this weekend. #Sothebys19thCentury #Spain

William Scott was among the most internationally celebrated British painters of the 20th century, moving to the creative hub of #Berlin in 1963. Here, he discovered a #pigment that became the eponymous #colour of the ‘Berlin Blues’ series. These works were also partly rooted in an avid interest in #Egyptian #sculpture, fuelled by the exceptional #archaeological collections in the city. This monumental #painting from the pivotal series caught the eye of influential Irish modernist #architect Dr Ronald Tallon, who persuaded Scott’s wife Mary to part with it having caught a glimpse of the painting hanging in the Scotts’ London home. Scott himself considered this impactful painting immensely significant, selecting it as the basis for a five-pence #stamp #design he created for the Eire postal service in 1973. On view in our #London #galleries from Friday 8 June, as part of this #summer’s Modern #British Week #exhibition.
