Nimbus is one of the finest examples of Gillian #Ayres’ work from the late 1950s and early ‘60s, encapsulating the sheer quality, vitality and expressive power of her canvases. One of Britain’s most significant #abstract painters, Ayres, who passed away earlier this year at the age of 88, stands alongside her American contemporaries Joan Mitchell and Helen #Frankenthaler. This work is in many ways the sister painting of the magnificent Break-Off, which was painted in the same year and now hangs in #Tate Britain. Conceived on an ‘American’ scale, it shares the same expansive framework, the same courage of gesture and the same beautiful balance of colour, between the bright, shiny surfaces of #Pop and the more sombre #palette of #AbstractExpressionism.

On view in our #London galleries ahead of Tuesday’s evening sale.

Painted in the early to mid-19th century, ‘St Patrick’s Hall, Dublin Castle’ shows elegantly dressed men and women gathered in circular groups across the Ballroom floor in anticipation of a dance, while those not involved can be seen lining either side of the Hall’s walls. The 1840s would seem to have been an indulgent period for the easing of the official restrictions on dress styles and hair ornaments: here, some unmarried ladies signal their position through wearing only fresh flowers and jewellery in the hair. Regulation on the court dress worn by gentlemen was strict on the fabric and style of the suit but allowed expression in a fancy waistcoat. This valuable historic record is currently on view in our #London galleries, as part of a collection of Irish Art assembled by Brian P. Burns. #SothebysIrish #SothebysIreland

A seminal work by the most celebrated British #sculptor of the past century, Henry #Moore’s Family Group represents the zenith of the sculptor’s lifelong obsession with the universal motif of #parenthood. To Moore, the family became a symbol of hope, of the intransience of human bonds of support, compassion and care, and of turning to the domestic life in the face of immense experiences of trauma after the Second World War. International appreciation of Moore’s work was burgeoning immediately after WWII – the monumental version of this #maquette was his first large-scale #commission in #bronze and his first ever major #retrospective took place at The Museum of Modern Art in New York in 1946. This piece boasts exceptional provenance, having been acquired by #MoMA just two years after its conception.

On view in our #London galleries ahead of an auction on Tuesday 20 November.

‘Portrait of Nan’, the only work Grant Wood refused to sell in his lifetime, heads to our American Art Auction today in #NYC. The extremely personal work portrays Wood’s beloved sister Nan, whose likeness is most recognized in the artist’s ‘American Gothic’ – one of the most iconic images in 20th century art. In response to the criticism the artist received for his stern depiction of Nan in ‘American Gothic’, Wood painted ‘Portrait of Nan’ one year later as a heartfelt apology to his sister. #SothebysAmerican #GrantWood
