So fascinated was #DavidBowie by #JacopoTintoretto that he named his record label after the #Venetian artist, and today marks a new era for the monumental altarpiece by the #Tintoretto that had been housed in the legendary musician’s #art collection for almost three decades - as well as a new revelation about this painting’s past that even #Bowie had been unaware of. Unveiled to the public at the #RubensHouse museum in #Antwerp this week, Angel foretelling Saint Catherine of Alexandria of her martyrdom (1560-70) was acquired by the Rubens House from Sotheby’s Bowie/Collector sale in November 2016. The influence of Tintoretto on #Rubens is profound – Rubens had as many as seven works by him in his private collection - and like Rubens, David Bowie had immense admiration for the Venetian master. What David Bowie never knew is that a recently discovered, brilliant underdrawing lies hidden beneath the layers of painting. Swipe to find out more on this remarkable discovery, the plans for this work and the publication it has inspired. #BowieCollector https://pers.rubenshuis.be/rubens-house-presents-david-bowies-tintoretto#

The power and authority with which Sir Terry #Frost uses the colour black in this cutting-edge example of the artistic avant-garde is a testament to his great prowess, and stands up to the finest examples of #monochrome painting by Franz #Kline or Pierre #Soulages. Three Graces (1956) was painted in the same year as the first British exhibition of American #AbstractExpressionism at the #Tate Gallery, which may well have encouraged his appreciation of an expressive paint surface, monochrome #palette and large scale #canvas. The theme of the Three Graces had fascinated Frost since he first encountered Peter Paul #Rubens’ Judgement of Paris of 1635-6 in the #NationalGallery in #London - allied to the attraction that the #pagan gods of #Cornwall held for him. During this time, Frost explored how he might introduce the figure into his otherwise bold abstract compositions. On view in our New Bond Street galleries ahead of Thursday’s ‘London to St Ives’ evening sale. #SothebysModBrit #TerryFrost #ModernBritishArt

Cecily Brown’s 'The Girl Who Had Everything'. A marvellous coalition of violence, sensuality, carnal desire and virtuous painterly mark-making, this represents Brown at her very finest. Our London galleries are open for viewing until Wednesday lunchtime, before our Contemporary Art sales begin. #SothebysContemporary #CecilyBrown

Chariots of Fire: Reg Butler was both an #architect and an essentially untrained avant-garde #sculptor – having worked briefly as an assistant in Henry #Moore’s studio and having tried his hand as a blacksmith during the war. His idiosyncratic style and experimental approach drew the attention of #contemporary artists and critics alike. As one of Butler’s earliest works, Machine from 1953 is one of those seminal pieces which led to his international recognition. A rare cast, the positioning of the figure bears close comparison to both Giacometti’s The #Chariot from 1950 as well as #ancient #bronzes. On view in our #London galleries ahead of Thursday’s London to St Ives auction. #SothebysModBrit #RegButler #ModernBritishArt #Sculpture

Gerhard Richter's striking abstract #painting, Split (Rubble), 1989, is installed in our #London galleries ahead of Wednesday's Contemporary Art Evening Auction. The slick cascade of white pigment conjures natural phenomena, suggesting melting snowscapes and rockfall across remote mountain ranges. However, when considering the date of this painting's execution, the title takes on a secondary meaning. Created in the months leading up to the fall of the Berlin Wall on 9th November, 1989, the tumbling weight and downwards drag of slick oil paint seems also to anticipate this momentous historical event. #GerhardRichter #SothebysContemporary

The summer season of auctions launched in #London this week with a memorable double-bill of record prices for #Kandinsky – first with when his dazzling expressionist painting of #Murnau sold for £21 million, and then just minutes – and six lots - later when his revolutionary Abstract painting Bild mit weissen Linien was chased by determined bidders to break a new #record at £33 million. Watch the #bidding battle for this seminal work by the pioneer of #abstraction when it appeared at auction for the very first time. The season continues this coming week with sales of #Contemporary and Modern British art, on view to the public in our #London galleries this weekend. #ArtofTheSeason #SothebysImpMod #SothebysModBrit
