We traveled out from Madrid to a small town in Toledo called Consuegra: famous for their windmills. We arrived in the middle of siesta (note: in Barcelona & Madrid, we had not witnessed any semblance of taking a siesta because all shops and restaurants were open), so it was a little jarring to be greeted with nothing but the sound of birds and the breeze through the trees. It was about a 20 min walk/hike through the village and up the hill to get to the windmills and castle which overlooked the town and surrounding agricultural plains - almost standing guard as silent watchmen. The only people we encountered were the few other out-of-towners, but the peaceful quiet allowed me to escape and imagine what this scene could have been like centuries before through the eyes of the fictional Don Quixote. For my next "wow" experience, I would love to go back to Spain and visit Basque Country in the north!
