As the calendar turned to October, typically a wet and soggy month, the forecast continued to show sun with just enough rain and cool temperatures to provide the best conditions of the year. To take advantage of this, we threw a party with bikes, bonfires and beers. Inviting 12 of our best homies was a no brainer and a great way to say thanks for a rad season!

“We were asked to do a collab together for the first time. At first, as a joke, we threw out totally opposite ideas and vibes to the creative team saying "hey could you make something work meshing these two vibes?". John's 'feel' was a death metal song, and my 'feel' was a song on the Ukelele by Israel Kamakawiwo'ole. Island vibes. We were expecting a laughing email back and instead of more jokes, they immediately sent us mockups of the goggle pretty similar to the finished product. And we were like, ‘actually, that's kind of sick.’ I still don't know if they knew we were trying to give them a hard time and joking initially.” - Angel Collinson

“The basic idea was a sibling collab- and although Angel and I are super close and similar in lots of ways, we are also near opposites in others, so that comes across with the opposing black/ white. But then we sent in two songs to the team - mine was a favorite metal song, and angel sent over the ukulele version of over the rainbow, so the lightning and bird of paradise were born together. Ride the Lightning is an all time favorite of mine, and a common poster tag line for movie premiere season, so I like that. I’m stoked on how they turned out- nice and crisp.” - Johnny Collinson

“The design on my strap was inspired by the arrow sash. It features a traditional colourful woven belt, traditional to Quebec back in it's early days. It's now seen on the Bonhomme Carnaval, during the Quebec winter festival, and I just liked how it looked and knew it would make a good design for a goggle strap.”

“For the past four years Smith has allowed me to have at it with my ID goggle designs. I originally started with pen to paper illustrations and slowly became more bold and expressive over time. It’s important for me to create imagery that’s unique. For this design I was manually manipulating scans with real roses, seeing how I could generate movement and a textile feel without digital generation... while still making it look organic. In a way this is my take on the industry standard of “shrink it and pink it,” but doing it in the right way where intention and creativity were the driving factor behind the outcome.”

“My goggle is meant to reflect my home; the eagle is the traditional symbol of my area and the geometric lines are a representation of the mountain where I started skiing. The design is minimalistic and I love how much it fits with the Skyline. Every time I wear my goggle I feel connected with my home and my traditions!”

“When you find your favorite product, you naturally want to incorporate it into more parts of your life. For me, my North Face Himalayan suit I call ’Bernie’ is that product. The goggles match Bernie (who’s printed on the inside of the strap if you're not familiar) and the goggles come in a one of a kind miniature TNF duffle bag.”

“I wanted to pick a design that would look good as the goggle aged, and I liked the look of distressed things in nature. I toyed with a bunch of ideas and then came across some big slabs of marble and stone down at the local stonework store. After looking at lots of big slabs I really resonated with the black marble. It had veins of white, red, and orange and gave it some bright pops of color. Next, we selected a portion that looked good as a strap. I was really happy how it turned out and because of the abstract subject the graphic looks great throughout the life of the goggle.” Shop the @sage_cattabriga_alosa I/O MAG™, part of this year’s Athlete Collection, at the link in our bio.

“Being from California doesn’t just mean I was born there. I’ve realized the people, culture, mountains, coast and valleys are part of my DNA. So for my Smith ID, I wanted to put a little bit of that DNA in the design. The California Bear and Red Star in the goggle are obvious tributes to the state flag. The leather triangle patch is a subtle acknowledgment of the sawtoothed peaks of the Sierra Nevada, where I was born and found interest in skiing, climbing and hiking. Lastly, the colors black and tan combine to highlight the diversity I grew up with and the earth tones of the California woodlands, deserts and beaches.”

“I’ve done a handful of signature goggles with Smith, but this one has been my favorite by far! It’s quite personal and a bit of a deep cut, with the signature flame and baby blue being a colorway I’ve rarely seen on goggles. Much like the I/O, the Squad is a goggle that’ll be in the line for decades to come and combined with the influence from my favorite movie, this goggle means a lot to me!” Shop the @sleepystevens Squad, part of this year’s Athlete Collection, at the link in our bio.

“My inspiration for this goggle was the quote ‘some see a weed, some see a wish.’ I have always loved dandelions and their association with wishes and dreams. I wanted to create a goggle that was for all the people that always see a wish rather than a weed, and those that dare to dream big.”
