U.K. sound artist Jon Davies (Kepla) and New York based-media theorist DeForrest Brown Jr. perform 'Substantia Nigra' in the duo’s first U.S. appearance, co-presented with @lampodotorg. Named after part of the brain packed with dopamine cells, #SubstantiaNigra is a multi-faceted work of sound and text. Kepla and @clinicalpoetics reward listeners with a mix of piano, field recordings, shared audio sketches and spoken word, in a series of meditations on race and alienation. My country! ’tis of thee
Stronghold of Slavery
Of thee I sing
Land where my fathers died
Where men man’s rights deride
From every mountainside
Thy deeds shall ring
The lyrics of ‘My Country ‘Tis of Thee’ have been re-written at least 100 times since 1831. From temperance, suffrage to abolition and the Confederacy, each re-writing supported a passionately held cause – and articulated a version of what it means to be American.
This Tuesday, April 30, artist @BethanyJoyCollins organizes ‘America: A Hymnal’, a special performance in conjunction with the Smart’s exhibition ‘Solidary & Solitary: The Joyner/Giuffrida Collection.’ Through singing all 100 versions of the song by individual performers, it presents a chronological retelling of American history, politics, and culture.

Free and open to all.

Spreading across 20 canvases, ‘I Am A Man’ is a text-based work about identity, history, and belonging by artist @hankwillisthomas. It is also about the experience of playing with language, meaning, and the sound of words.

Regarding the artwork, Thomas has commented that, “I am always influenced by words and how the words we use and the words we choose can affect the way we relate to ourselves and to others. All of these text pieces say I, us, you and me, so it’s speaking directly to the viewer, actually using their voice. When you read it, you kind of embody it on a certain level psychologically.” Shown here is museum visitor @mamadouabousarr contemplating the piece and the phrases.

We invite you to come experience the art by yourself – on view in ‘Embodying the Self’ through May 19.
